Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week
Sam Perez, Jr., RHP, Missouri State
Perez came through with a pair of shutdown relief efforts this week to help the Bears
extend their win streak to nine games. The junior from Branson, Mo., picked up his
sixth and seventh victories of the season, working a combined 12.0 innings over
which he allowed just one run on nine hits while striking out 16 without issuing a
single walk. In his second relief outing of 6.0 or more innings this season Tuesday
at Saint Louis, the right-hander limited the Billikens to a single run while scattering six hits and striking out a career-high 10 batters in the 8-2 win. He followed that performance with a
5.1 inning stint in Sunday’s win over SIU, fanning six more and allowing only three hits while holding the
Salukis scoreless to give the Bears time to rally from a two-run deficit. He allowed a pair of singles in the
third and a leadoff hit in the fourth before dispatching 12 Salukis in a row to finish his day.

MVC BASEBALL WEEKLY RELEASE NO. 12
MAY 11, 2015
Seeds Up for Grabs
With just one weekend remaining in the regular season schedule, Missouri State (15-3 MVC) has a twogame lead atop the league standings. The Bears
can lock up the No. 1 seed for next week’s MVC
Baseball Championship with just one win against
their weekend opponent (Bradley).
Dallas Baptist (13-5 MVC) can finish no lower than
the No. 2 seed, regardless of the outcome of any
of its games against Wichita State this weekend.
Meanwhile, the Patriots still have a chance at the
No. 1 seed and the regular-season championship
if Dallas Baptist wins all three games against the
Shockers AND Missouri State loses all three games
to Bradley.
Bradley (10-8 MVC), Wichita State (9-9 MVC) and
Illinois State (8-10 MVC) can all finish as high as the
No. 3 seed and as low as the No. 5 seed, based on
a variety of weekend results. The Redbirds own the
head-to-head tiebreaker over both the Braves and
Shockers, while Bradley holds the advantage over
Wichita State in head-to-head action.
Evansville (8-13 MVC) has already completed its full
league schedule and can finish as high as the No. 5
seed and as low as the No. 7 seed. The Purple Aces
hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over both Illinois
State and Indiana State.
Indiana State (6-12 MVC) can finish as high as
the No. 5 seed and as low as the No. 8 seed, as
the Sycamores travel to Illinois State for their final
league series.
Southern Illinois (6-15 MVC) has also already completed its full league slate and can finish as high
as the No. 7 seed and as low as the No. 8 seed.
The Salukis hold the head-to-head advantage over
Indiana State based on their 2-1 series victory over
the Sycamores.
Rank and File
Marginal
Bradley is also receiving votes in the latest (May 11)
NCBWA poll.
National Leaders
Both Missouri State and Dallas Baptist remain in
numerous top-25 polls entering this week. The
Baseball America poll holds the highest ranking for
both teams, as the Bears check in at No. 10, while
the Patriots rank No. 11.
Streaking
Dallas Baptist and Missouri State have current
winning streaks of 10-straight and nin consecutive
games, respectively.
The Patriots 10-game winning streak ranks as the
fourth best active streak in the nation, while the
Bears nine-straight wins are tied for the fifth best
current streak.
Winning!
The Patriots (39, T-6th) and Bears (38, T-9th) wins
so far this season also rank in the top-10 in terms
of total games won. Just five teams have reached
the 40+ win plateau, as Dallas Baptist needs just
one more victory to reach 40 victories in the regular
season for the first time since joining the Division I
ranks, while Missouri State last tallied 40 wins in
2012 (40-22).
Valley RPI Ranks No. 6
According to the latest RPI update from WarrenNolan.com (May 11), the Missouri Valley Conference
ranks No. 6 amongst 32 leagues. Four of the Power-Five conferences (SEC, ACC, Pac-12 and Big 12)
hold four of the top five positions, while the American Athletic Conference is the only non-Power Five
league ahead of the MVC.
Please note that the above seeding prognostications are only based on mathematical possibilities,
without taking into account any specific head-tohead or multiple tiebreaking scenarios.
Three in RPI’s Top-25
30 and Over Club
The Company We Keep
Dallas Baptist (39-9), Missouri State (38-10) and
Bradley (32-15) have already passed the 30-win
plateau this season.
The Braves’ 32 wins are the most since tallying 32
victories in 2007, and marks the 11th time overall
that Bradley has compiled 30+ wins in a season.
The Bears’ 38 wins so far this season are the most
since 40 in 2012, and marks the 20th time since
1991 that Missouri State has posted 30+ victories
in a season. Since joining the Division I ranks in
2004, the Patriots have had 30+ wins in a season
in all but one year (2010), as Dallas Baptist is looking to reach the 40-win mark during the regularseason for the first time since becoming a NCAA DI
program.
Over the last 15 seasons, the MVC has had at least
three teams with 30+ wins in all but one season
(2004). In that same span, four teams have had 30
or more victories seven times, while 30+ wins were
produced by five teams twice (2001 and 2014) and
six teams in 2012.
Three league teams rank in the top-20 of the RPI,
led by Dallas Baptist (No. 1), Missouri State (No. 10)
and Bradley (No. 23).
Dallas Baptist (+3.7, T-2nd) and Missouri State
(+3.0, T-12th) both rank in the nation’s top-15 in
scoring margin. The Patriots and Bears are two of
15 teams that have an average winning margin of
3.0 or higher.
The MVC has three individuals leading the nation
in statistical categories, including Evansville’s Kevin Kaczmarski (.476 batting average, .552 on-base
percentage), Missouri State’s Joey Hawkins (25
sacrifice bunts) and Missouri State’s Matt Hall (124
strikeouts).
Against the Field
The MVC holds a winning record against 14 leagues
in non-conference play (Atlantic Sun, Big East, Conference USA, Mid-American, Metro Atlantic, Mountain West, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Pac-12, Southland, SWAC, Summit, Sun Belt and West Coast), and
at least a .500 record against another two leagues
(Atlantic-10 and Horizon).
Top-25 Victories
The MVC has won 10 games against top-25 opponents so far this season, as Dallas Baptist leads the
way with three victories over ranked opponents (No.
4 TCU, No. 21 Baylor and No. 23 Oklahoma). Missouri State (No. 14 Missouri and No. 20 Missouri)
and Wichita State (No. 14 UC Santa Barbara and
No. 25 Oklahoma) each have two victories over top25 opponents, while Bradley (No. 14 Iowa), Indiana
State (No. 1 Vanderbilt) and Southern Illinois (No.
19 Illinois) have each won one game against a top25 opponent this season.
In the last five seasons, the Valley has only registered five or more victories against top-25 teams
twice, notching seven wins in 2011 and five victories over ranked opponents in 2014.
With Dallas Baptist (No. 1) and Missouri State (No.
10) each in the RPI’s top-10, the Missouri Valley
Conference trails only the SEC (No. 5 LSU, No. 7
Florida and No. 8 Texas A&M) and the ACC (No. 3
Florida State, No. 4 Miami and No. 9 Louisville),
which have three teams in the RPI’s top-10.
Home Field Advantage
Wichita State’s current eight-game home winning
streak is tied for the sixth-best active streak in the
nation. The Shockers have not lost a game at Eck
Stadium in nearly a month (April 12).
Road Warriors
Missouri State’s 18-4 (.818) road record is the nation’s third-best winning percantage in away games
this season. The Bears are one of just nine teams to
have lost four or fewer games on the road in 2015.

MVC BASEBALL WEEKLY RELEASE NO. 13
MAY 11, 2015
NOTEWORTHY
In addition to the league’s player and newcomer of the week selections, several conference players had notable performances, and
they include:
Nash Knight (DBU) – Knight hit .600 (6-for-10) in the
Patriots’ three wins last week. Knight hit safely in all three
games and blasted his second home run of the season on
Tuesday versus UT-Arlington. For the week, Knight led the
team with a .900 slugging percentage and a .636 on-base
percentage. He also scored a team-leading three runs and
collected 3 RBI’s. At third base, Knight played errorless
baseball last week and made a couple of sensational plays
on the hot corner in DBU’s series versus San Francisco.
Joe Kelch (ILS) – Kelch had a weekend to remember as he
batted .727 (8-of-11) in a three-game series at Bradley over
the weekend, helping the Redbirds to a pair of victories and
a series win. Kelch was a perfect 6-for-6 with two doubles,
a walk and a sacrifice fly, two RBIs and three runs scored
in Saturday’s doubleheader. He followed that with a 2-for-5
performance, with a walk and a run scored, in Sunday’s
win. For the weekend, he hit .727/714/.909. He also played
perfect defense as the Redbirds’ starting second baseman
in all three games. Kelch currently leads the Redbirds with
a .367 batting average, ranking second in the Missouri
Valley Conference.
Andy Young (INS) – Young racked up five RBI in the series
sweep of SEMO over the weekend. Of Young’s three hits,
he belted an RBI double, and a three-run homer. The RBI
gave the Sycamores the lead in the Saturday and Sunday
contests. Young recorded a 1.000 fielding percentage over
the three games.
Jake Burger (MSU) – Burger led the MSU offense to a 4-0
week, hitting .412 (7-for-17) while driving in at least one run
in each contest and totaling six RBIs for the week. Burger
tallied four extra-base hits, including three doubles to rise to
second on the Bears’ freshman list for two-baggers, just one
behind MSU rookie record-holder Jason Hart (20 in 1996).
The third baseman tripled, scored and drove in a run with a
2-for-4 night in Tuesday’s 8-2 win at Saint Louis, then plated
the lone run in Friday’s series-opening 1-0 victory over SIU
with another two-hit effort. Burger delivered again in game
two, recording two more doubles and driving in three runs,
including his two-base hit with the bases loaded that stretched
the Bears’ lead to four runs in the third inning. He capped
the week with yet another two-out, run-scoring hit to put the
Bears on top in Sunday’s series finale that ultimately gave
MSU its first three-game sweep of SIU in 16 years.
Chance Adams (DBU) – Adams notched two wins last
week to improve his record to 7-1 on the season. In 5.2
innings on the hill, Adams did not allow an earned run and
struck out nine, while surrendering just two hits and issuing
one walk. In Tuesday’s win over UT-Arlington, Adams came
out of the pen to work 2.2 innings of relief and allowed just
one unearned run, while striking out five. In the Patriots’
1-0 victory over San Francisco on Saturday, Adams entered
in the seventh inning of a scoreless game and shutout the
Dons over the final three innings, striking out four batters
and allowing just one hit.
Brodie Harkness (UE) – Harkness threw another quality start, his seventh of the season, against Wichita State
on May 12. The freshman lefty threw 6.1 innings, yielding
three runs (one earned) on six hits. It was his fourth start
(in 12 chances) in which he did not allow a walk. Harkness
has issued one or fewer walks in 75% of his starts. He also
struck out three in the no decision.
Jacob Hendren (ILS) – Hendren tied an Illinois State
single-season record with his 10th victory of the season after
pitching his second-straight complete game in Saturday’s
8-0 shutout win at Bradley. Hendren allowed just four hits
and did not walk a batter in the complete-game effort, which
was his third of the season, but first spanning nine innings.
He struck out a career-high 11 batters in the win. Hendren
is currently tied for the Missouri Valley Conference lead in
wins, while also ranking among the top five in the league
in ERA (2.81), opponents’ batting average (.228), innings
pitched (89.2), strikeouts (82) and starts (13).
Austin Conway (INS) – Conway appeared in two games
for the Sycamores in the sweep of Southeast Missouri
State. Conway earned the save in the series opener Friday
night, tossing 1.0 innings and striking out two of the three
batters he faced. Conway worked Saturday night, entering
with a runner on second in the eighth. Conway racked up
a career-high eight strike outs in the 5.0 innings which sets
a new career-high. The Sycamores made use of the stellar
outing, defeating SEMO in the bottom of the 14th inning.

MVC Players and Pitchers of the Week are selected each week during
the baseball season. The players are announced on Monday afternoon and appear in a weekly press release. Nominees are provided
by each school’s sports information contact and voted on by a panel
appointed by the league office.
Chad Whitmer (SIU) – Whitmer pitched his best game
of the season, holding No. 14 Missouri State to one run on
four hits. Whitmer pitched a career-high seven innings and
had a career best six strikeouts. Whitmer also lowered his
season ERA to under 5.00 with his performance.
Chase Williams (WSU) – Williams earned the win on
Sunday against Evansville with 7.2 shutout innings. He allowed six hits with three walks and six strikeouts. Only four
Aces reached scoring position against him in the game. It
was the longest outing of his career and the first shutout by
the Shocker pitching staff this season.
Ryan Sabo (SIU) – Sabo had the hot bat for the Salukis
in their series against No. 14 Missouri State. His best game
of the series came in the finale, where he went 3-for-4 with
one run scored and an RBI. Sabo’s presence was also felt
on defense, making several important plays at third base,
as he recorded eight assists during the weekend.
Mikel Mucha (WSU) – Mucha led the Shockers to a 4-0
week with a midweek win over Kansas State and a weekend
sweep over Evansville. On Tuesday against the Wildcats,
he went 2-for-4 with a double and in game one against the
Aces he went 1-for-2 with a walkoff home run in the bottom
of the ninth. On Saturday, he went 2-for-5 with a run and in
the finale he went 3-for-4 with a run, three RBI, a walk and
a stolen base.

MVC BASEBALL WEEKLY RELEASE NO. 13
MAY 11, 2015
DALLAS BAPTIST (39-9, 13-5 MVC)
BRADLEY (32-15, 10-8 MVC)
What’s On the Line
A Winning Combination
30 Somethings and League Leaders
Single-Digit Losses
Bradley heads to Missouri State for the final series of the regular season
and plenty will be on the line for both teams. While Missouri State will
be trying to lock up the MVC regular-season title, Bradley will be trying to
secure a top three seed for next week’s MVC Baseball Championship and
the Braves have a chance to add more quality wins to their NCAA Tournament resume. Bradley begins the week at No. 23 in the RPI and with its
home schedule complete, the Braves have a chance to build on their 21
wins away from home. Bradley has not enjoyed a winning Valley record or finished in the top half
of the league standings since joining in a three-way tie for third in 2007 with a 13-11 MVC mark.
Bradley’s 32 wins to date this season matches the 2007 Braves (32-21) for the most wins in a
season by the Braves since 1996 (40-22). Bradley has accumulated its 32 wins by succeeding
against its share of 30-win opponents. Missouri State will become Bradley’s ninth opponent to win
at least 30 games this season. Bradley is 9-8 overall against eight teams that have won at least 30
games this year and the Braves have played 15 of those games away from home. Missouri State
also will become Bradley’s sixth opponent to enter the final week of the regular season sitting
atop its respective conference standings. The Braves will have played five of those six teams away
from home and Bradley has posted a 5-5 record in those league-leading games away from home.
One Noteworthy Game
The second game of Saturday’s doubleheader against Illinois State proved noteworthy in two ways.
The Braves turned the first triple play on record in Bradley Baseball history, turning a sacrifice
bunt attempt with runners at first and second into a 2-5-6 triple play. Only one 2-5-6 triple play
has been executed in MLB history and it was accomplished by the Pittsburgh Pirates against
the St. Louis Cardinals on May 24, 1893. In addition to the triple play oddities, both Bradley and
Illinois State used twin brothers in Saturday’s night cap. Third-year Braves Brent and Nathan
Stong both pitched for Bradley, appearing in the same collegiate game for the first time in their
careers. Meanwhile, Jacob (P) and Jared (RF) Hendren both played the full game for Illinois State.

Entering the final week of the regular season, Dallas Baptist continues
to hold the No. 1 RPI in the nation according to the NCAA, WarrenNolan.
com, D1Baseball.com and Boyd’s World. Behind the Patriots’ top RPI is
a team that has faced the 14th toughest schedule in college baseball, as
reported by both Warren Nolan and D1Baseball. Also factoring into Dallas
Baptist’s top RPI is the club’s 8-6 record versus teams in the top-50 in
RPI and 16-8 against the top-100. The Patriots’ 19 road wins also ranks
as the second most in the country.
The Patriots enter their game on May 12 versus Oklahoma State with only nine losses on the
season. Last year, Dallas Baptist’s ninth loss came over a full month earlier, when the Patriots
were 23-9 after falling to TCU on April 8. In comparison to the 2004 team, who owns the most
wins in school history as a NCAA Division I program with 46, the Patriots lost their ninth game on
March 20, 2004. They also started their season on January 31 that year, nearly two weeks earlier
than the start of the 2015 season. In comparison to the 2004 Patriots, this year’s club owns an
.812 win percentage, compared to the 2004 team’s .730 win percentage.
Salters Streaking
Daniel Salters is in the midst of the longest hit streak of his career, as he has hit safely in his
last 13 games. Over the 13-game stretch, Salters is hitting .345 (19-for-55) with one home run
and nine RBI. It has been a remarkable turnaround for the Patriots’ junior catcher, who got off to
a slow start and was hitting a mere .152, one month into the season on March 13. Since then,
Salters’ average has been on a steady rise. The hit that may have ignited Satlers’ season came
on March 28, when he drove in the game-winning run in the ninth inning versus Illinois State.
Since that hit, Salters has posted a team-best .376 batting average. He also leads the team in
doubles with 11 and is second in RBI with 19 over that 24-game stretch.
Koch Still Saving the Day
Brandon Koch remains just three saves away from tying Chris Haney’s school record of 25 saves.
Koch is also just three saves away from matching the single-season school record of 16 saves,
held by Ted Hebert and Clint Davis.

MVC BASEBALL WEEKLY RELEASE NO. 13
MAY 11, 2015
EVANSVILLE (27-22, 8-13 MVC)
Kaczmarksi Getting Attention
Record Setting
Evansville senior outfielder Kevin Kaczmarski was named to the
30-player USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award Watch List last
week. The Golden Spikes Award is presented to the top amateur
baseball player in the country each year. Kaczmarski leads all
Division I baseball players with a .476 batting average and .552
on-base percentage.
Junior left-handed pitcher Jacob Hendren tied Illinois State’s singleseason wins record last weekend when he pitched a nine-inning,
complete-game shutout against Bradley in the second game of
a doubleheader Saturday. Hendren allowed just four hits and no
walks in the shutout, and tied the Illinois State single-season wins
mark of 10, held by Dan Savas (2013) and Irish O’Reilly (1966).
Statistically Speaking
Statistically, Evansville is led offensively by outfielder Kevin Kaczmarski. His .476 batting
average, 81 hits, 19 doubles, seven triples, 52 runs batted in, 126 total bases, a .741
slugging percentage, a .552 on-base percentage and 13 stolen bases are all team-highs.
Outfielder Josh Jyawook (.327), infielder Jonathan Ramon (.317) and outfielder Jarod Perry
(.306) also have above .300 batting averages for the Purple Aces. Ramon has a teambest five home runs. Right-hander Ryan Billo has a team-low 3.03 earned run average.
Eight different Evansville pitchers have recorded at least one win including seven from
Billo and six by left-hander Brodie Harkness. The team is cumulatively hitting .279 this
season with a 4.72 team ERA.
Midweek Success
After losing its first two midweek games of the season, Evansville has won 10-straight
midweek games and is looking to extend the streak to 11 when the Purple Aces visit
Murray State on Tuesday, May 12.

MAY 11, 2015
INDIANA STATE (24-23, 6-12 MVC)
Sycamore Sweep
At Home in Carbondale
Over the weekend, the Indiana State Sycamores swept the SEMO
Redhawks in Terre Haute. It was a full calendar year since the last time
Indiana State has swept an opponent. In 2014, the Sycamores swept
Missouri State in Terre Haute, May 9-11.
Missouri State continued its string of dominance over Southern Illinois last
weekend, sweeping the Salukis in a three-game series for the first time
since 1999. Since joining the Valley in 1991, the Bears have claimed a
series win or split in 21 of their 25 regular-season series with the Salukis.
Missouri State has won 10 of the 13 series and 29 of the 41 total games
played in Carbondale over the same stretch.
Walk This Way
Indiana State drew 21 walks over the weekend, with Andy Young and Connor McClain drawing
four walks in the three games played. The last time the Sycamores drew 21 walks in a week,
Indiana State played in five games. Of the 21 walks, seven came around to score. With each
game being decided by one run, the free bases proved to be the difference as Indiana State took
three games from SEMO.
Making It Count
In Friday’s 8-7 victory in the series opener with SEMO, Connor McClain only had one hit in the
contest. In fact, McClain only had one hit during the series with SEMO, but McClain made the
most of it. With runners on first and second, McClain first attempted to lay down a bunt, but was
unable to do so. After working the count full, McClain belted his third home run of the season to
give the Sycamores the 8-7 lead before Austin Conway came in and closed it out. It was the first
of three one-run victories for Indiana State over SEMO during the weekend as the Sycamores
swept a team for the first time in 2015.

Hall Tops Bears’ Strikeout Chart
Junior pitcher Matt Hall used a 14-strikeout effort against Southern Illinois on Saturday to eclipse
Pierce Johnson’s Missouri State single-season record of 119, set in 2012. Hall, who now has 124
punchouts on the year, is tied for 16th on the Missouri Valley Conference’s single-season list, 42
shy of the conference record held by Wichita State’s Bryan Oelkers (1982).
Road to Success
Missouri State picked up four more road wins last week, improving to 18-4 on the year in away
games. The Bears’ 0.818 win percentage on the road represents their best since 1978, when
they went 12-2 (0.857). Coupled with their 7-3 record in neutral field contests, the Bears’ 25
wins away from home equals the best total in school history. Missouri State also logged 25 road/
neutral field wins in both 2002 and 2003.

Mucha Walking Off In Style
Will Farmer has been one of the best in the MVC in laying down
sacrifice bunts. The sophomore ranks second in the conference with 12.
Junior Mikel Mucha collected his second walkoff hit of the season
on Friday against Evansville. He hit a solo home run in the bottom
of the ninth to give the Shockers a 4-3 win over the Aces. He also
had a walkoff single on April 24 against New Mexico. It was the first
walkoff home run by a Shocker since Cody Lassley had one against
Bradley on March 28, 2010.

With 19 doubles this season, Logan Blackfan is tied for first in the MVC and is five
away from tying SIU’s single-season record.
