Spreadsheets are no longer enough for efficient IP space management. See how SolarWinds® Free IP Address Tracker (IPAT) can help overcome the downsides of manual IP address management methods, and help you efficiently manage, track, and control your IPv4 and IPv6 address space. IPAT offers automated and simplified IP management with: • Centralized IPv4 and IPv6 address management. • Active monitoring and alerting of IP usage & conflicts. • Collaborative IP management through role-based access. Centralized IPv4 & IPv6 address management Use IPAT to efficiently manage your IP address blocks without spending valuable time and effort building and maintaining IP documentation. • Automate subnet discovery, and scan inventory IP subnets and address blocks. • Search IP blocks for addresses and status, including user device details. • Manage IPv6 address blocks. • View IP address changes from the event log. • Actively detect IP conflicts. How can IPAT help? 1. Automatic IPv4 Subnet Discovery: Scan the network to auto-discover subnets. Create an up-to-date IP address map of your network by directly pulling data from router configurations and connected machines. page 2 Reviewer’s Guide: FREE IP ADDRESS TRACKER (IPAT) Automatically or Manually Detect Adjacent Router For Scan Provide SNMP credentials for polling devices and discovery settings for autodiscovery. page 3 Reviewer’s Guide: FREE IP ADDRESS TRACKER (IPAT) 2. Active Network Scanning: Perform active network scans to verify IP address status. Select a desired IP network in the left panel, and click Scan. You can also click View subnet scan status to view the status of your subnet scan. Scan Subnets and View Scan Status Automatic Scan that Runs in the Background The below view shows which IP addresses are used, available, transient, or reserved. a. Manually set IP status b. Import IP list from existing spreadsheets c. Show details about specific IP addresses Set IP Status Manually Import from Spreadhsheet Vendor Name Used IP Address 3. IP Address Detail & History Tracking: View the IP address details (including userdefined fields), and history. Click the User & Device tab. Here, you can see user- and device-specific information reported by SolarWinds® User Device Tracker (UDT), including where the IP address is currently connected, historical connections, and the user associated with that connection. page 4 Reviewer’s Guide: FREE IP ADDRESS TRACKER (IPAT) 4. IPv6 Address Management: IPAT routinely discovers IPv6 addresses by examining router tables. Once an IPv6 address is found, IPAT assesses the ongoing operational status using ICMPv6. It specifies the neighbor routers and IPv6 addresses for existing subnets in IPAT, and starts managing IPv6 address blocks with automated discovery. You are able to view data in the same interface as your IPv4 addresses Use this view to plan for and manage your IPv6 address tasks. Automatic Scanning & Discovery IPv6 Addresses with Status Vendor Details You can look up a vendor name based on MAC address for both IPv6 and IPv4 addresses. page 5 Reviewer’s Guide: FREE IP ADDRESS TRACKER (IPAT) Obtain IPv6 address details on IPv6 history and other resources. 5. IP Address Search: Search on any IP address to view status, history, and details. Search for IP addresses, then click the drop-down menu for the Search in field. The Search for IP Address resource allows you to search for specific IP addresses using a range of parameters. page 6 Reviewer’s Guide: FREE IP ADDRESS TRACKER (IPAT) Active monitoring and alerting of IP usage and conflicts Use IPAT to detect IP duplications to help avoid network downtime due to IP conflicts. • Monitor and receive alerts when there is an IP conflict in the network. • View real-time status of IP address availability and IP address details. • Determine if an IP address has recently changed by viewing event history. • Detect and resolve IP conflicts, receive alerts when new vendors enter the network, and track IP addresses to the user using UDT. How can IPAT help? 1. Flexible Reporting: Create reports for available IP addresses, reserved addresses, used addresses, all subnets, IP address histories, and events. 2. IP Conflict Detection: IPAT helps you quickly detect IP conflicts. Integrating IPAT with UDT helps minimize disruptions to critical network services and applications. This advanced integration feature, called SolarWinds® IP Control Bundle (IPCB), can help you: • Quickly respond to alerts for IP conflicts and other IP-related issues. • Assess the severity of the IP conflicts. • Employ troubleshooting strategies with real-time IP address information. page 7 Reviewer’s Guide: FREE IP ADDRESS TRACKER (IPAT) IPCB helps resolve network issues caused by IP conflicts in two steps: 1. View the new IP Address Conflicts resource to see alerts about IP conflicts in the network, comprehensive information about the IP address in conflict, the conflict type, subnet where the conflict occurred, device/device type that caused the conflict, and the switch/switch port where the devices are connected. 2. Click on the IP address to obtain further details that help analyze the conflict and determine steps to resolve the problem. View details like recommended action, associated DHCP scopes, and device details, including Host MAC/IP, User MAC/IP, Switch port, and MAC/Port (or SSID) history. The view also allows you to do a remote shutdown of the switch port and take the offending device off the network. Switch Port Shutdown page 8 Reviewer’s Guide: FREE IP ADDRESS TRACKER (IPAT) Collaborative IP management through role-based access IPAT allows each team to manage their own subnets, address blocks, and DHCP and DNS services without impacting each other. Role-based administration helps streamline user delegation and reduce downtime due to human errors. • Grant varying privilege levels and custom roles for enhanced control and security. • Create and edit role definitions down to the subnet level to restrict user access. • Define user access roles per subnet, group, or supernet. How can IPAT help? 1. Team and Role-Based Permission: Secure collaboration using permissioned access. Click Add New Account to create user groups with permission, and click Edit to modify existing permissions. Add or Edit User Roles and Permissions page 9 Reviewer’s Guide: FREE IP ADDRESS TRACKER (IPAT) 2. User Tracking and Event Logs: Optional integration with UDT to show device-level detail. UDT integration with IPAT shows you the users as well as the UDT node and port associated with that IP address. UDT User UDT Port UDT Node Vendor Details To access UDT Subview, check the box next to a Used IP address with UDT information. Click View Details. This reveals the IPAT details about this IP address, including the status, history, and details. The left panel contains the available sub-views for a particular IP address, including a view for UDT-specific information. page 10 Reviewer’s Guide: FREE IP ADDRESS TRACKER (IPAT) 3. User-Defined Grouping: Flexible IP address organization by geography, business unit, function, etc. SolarWinds® free IPAT can monitor and track up to 254 IP addresses. To get monitoring support for more IP addresses as well as monitoring and management for DHCP and DNS servers, activate the free 30-day trial of SolarWinds® IP Address Manager (IPAM). At the end of 30 days, if you wish to switch back to the free IPAT, click on the Switch Back to Limited Free Tool button on the summary page. Switch Back to Free IPAT page 11 Reviewer’s Guide: FREE IP ADDRESS TRACKER (IPAT) Conclusion If you’re still managing enterprise IP data manually through spreadsheets or other means, it is time to transition to an automated solution. Be proactive in attending to issues and planning ahead for IP address provisioning and subnet allocation. IPAT can help you manage daily challenges such as creating, migrating, or reconfiguring subnets, maintaining high-availability of DHCP and DNS services, and ensuring reliable operations by monitoring critical resources, and determining proper forecasting and planning.
