HARLAN E. BOYLES
The Harlan E. Boyles Distinguished CEO Lecture
Series was named in honor of our former and late
State Treasurer. The series brings a chief executive
officer to campus each semester for classroom
visits, an executive luncheon, lecture and reception.
This provides many opportunities for interaction
with students, faculty and the business community.
Harlan Boyles served the State of North Carolina
for 49 years, including six four-year terms as Treasurer. He was dedicated to
education and, through his involvement with Appalachian and the Walker
College, was able to share his experience, advice and wise counsel with
hundreds of students and future business leaders.

In 1991, with the assistance of Senator James T. Broyhill and the
leadership of Dr. Kenneth E. Peacock, an endowment fund was established
to support the Boyles lecture series. In 2000, on the occasion of Treasurer
Boyles’ retirement from state government, a second endowment was
established to support a faculty professorship and student scholarships.
In 2004, the lobby on the second floor of Peacock Hall, was dedicated
to the memory of Harlan Boyles. The renovation of the lobby provided
an inviting entrance to Peacock Hall with its custom-made display cases
highlighting memorabilia from Treasurer Boyles’ career and personal life,
comfortable chairs, tables for study and a built-in media center. In 2009, a
30-seat board room was added adjacent to the Boyles lobby. This executivestyle board room serves as a meeting space for the Business Advisory
Council, as well as other College of Business advisory boards.
State Employees Credit Union CEO Jim Blaine (second from left) served as the 54th lecturer
in the series. Pictured with Blaine are, from left, Edward Boyles, Chancellor Sheri N. Norris,
Senator Jim Broyhill, and Walker College Dean Heather Norris.

an Executive-in-Residence for its Center for Positive Marketing.
In recognition of his accomplishments, Mr. Osborn was a recipient of a
2012 AdColor Award celebrating diversity champions in advertising, media,

The Walker College of Business
engages with the community, both
locally and globally, to offer Appalachian
business students transformational
educational experiences. Opportunities
exist for students to connect with the
community and industry professionals
not only through events like today’s
CEO Lecture, but also by participating in programs and offerings from
resource centers. The BB&T Student Leadership Center and the Brantley
Risk and Insurance Center, which boasts the fifth largest Risk Management
and Insurance program in the country, serve hundreds of students through
professional presentations and college and center-level activities such as
shadow days and career fairs. Hands-on, real-world exposure to industry is a
hallmark of the Walker College of Business.
Undergraduates from the Walker
College recently won the N.C. Chartered
Financial Analyst (CFA) Society Research
Challenge. The students, Caitlin Owings,
left, Matthew Wine, Nathan Birmingham
and Brett Featherstone are all members
of the Bowden Investment Group in
the Department of Finance, Banking
and Insurance. The goal of the research challenge is to provide students
with a real-world application of writing research reports. The challenge
also teaches best practices in research to the next generation of analysts
and offers experiences that complement students’ academic curriculum.
Appalachian teams have won in five of the seven years that the competition
has been held in North Carolina, and Appalachian is the only university in
the state to have a team in the finals in all seven years.
The Walker College of Business
incorporates a global orientation as
an integral component of students’
academic experience. All students
satisfy a global issues requirement,
and many participate in a study abroad
program. In the past year, 168 graduate
and undergraduate students studied
abroad on six continents in 18 countries, including Belize, Brazil, China,
Costa Rica, Cuba, England, France, Malawi, Panama, Poland and Zambia.
Walker College Highlights
The Walker College of Business
Scholarship Reception provides a forum
for student scholarship recipients to
meet their benefactors. The event brings
together hundreds of individuals - the
donors who make a difference in the
lives of tomorrow’s business leaders and
the student recipients. For the 2013-14
academic year, approximately $373,000 was awarded to 354 students. The
2015 Scholarship Reception is scheduled for October 23.
Twenty-three professional
organizations and honor societies
are represented in the college.
Student groups regularly travel to
national conferences to network in
their fields, develop leadership skills,
compete against peers and grow
their professional skills. Pictured are
student members of Appalachian’s American Marketing Association (AMA)
chapter, who recently traveled to New Orleans, LA to participate in the AMA
International Collegiate Conference.
Greetings from the Dean
Our commitment to deliver
transformational educational
experiences to our students is steadfast.
As dean of the Walker College of
Business, I am building on a tradition of
excellence set by my predecessors. The
college will continue to expand study
abroad and global opportunities, further
emphasize the importance of connecting industry professionals with our
students and underscore the importance of ethics and sustainability in our
curriculum.
The Dean’s Club, the college’s annual giving society, provides crucial
academic scholarship and enhances the academic experience for our
students. Support from the Dean’s Club is critical to our mission. To join,

Transportation Insight
Center for Entrepreneurship
Housed in the Walker College of Business, the Transportation Insight
Center for Entrepreneurship supports students launching their own
businesses. The center was created in 2006 and named for Hickory-based
Transportation Insight in 2011, when a 1,700-square-foot, contemporary
space was opened in Peacock Hall. Accelerator space, mentoring programs,
and special events are offered to students of all majors. The staff coaches
students in forming and operating their own businesses.

Appalachian student entrepreneurs
earned two of the top three spots at
Wake Forest University’s latest Retail &
Health Innovation Challenge, claiming
$15,000 in prize money. The event,
which serves as a national forum for
Artist Rendering for Demonstration Purposes
students to present business plans
with an aim to energize retail and
contribute to the health and well being of consumers, hosted sixteen
teams, which were selected as semi-finalists to present their ideas. Three of
those teams were from Appalachian, and were representative of the crossdisciplinary collaboration occurring on campus, often with support from the
Transportation Insight Center for Entrepreneurship.
Center staff also advised Jason
Capps, left, Bailey Williams and Mary
Oshana, who won $15,000 at last year’s
Texas Christian University Values and
Ventures Business Plan Competition.
They took top honors for their business
plan to manufacture and distribute a
therapeutic glove designed by Williams
to improve dexterity and grip in children and adults.
The center hosts an annual Carole
Moore McLeod Entrepreneur Summit
each fall, which provides an opportunity
for students and community members to
meet, network and learn from successful
entrepreneurs. Business owners from
across the region present and discuss
entrepreneurial issues in a classroom
setting. As part of the day’s events, selected student business ideas are
pitched to a panel of entrepreneur judges. The 2015 summit is scheduled
for Friday, November 6. For more information about the center’s programs
and offerings, please contact TICFE Managing Director Erich Schlenker, at
(828) 262-8325, schlenkere@appstate.edu.
