An 8-meter drop out the gate, it’s important that racers get to the front of the pack early to own their line. KICKER Not the largest jump on the course, but it will throw off skaters’ balance because of speed they’ll have coming off the start ramp. This will separate the rookies from the pros early on in the course. RED BULL CRASHED ICE 2012 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP Saint Paul Course In keeping pace with the growth of the sport, the technology and course construction has had to evolve dramatically since 2001. The course may have come from simple beginnings – using the natural winter elements in northern areas to help build a track of ice - but today it is a feat of engineering that is constructed from tons of steel and cooling systems that can sustain a professional sheet of ice in conditions up to 60° F. These advancements open up a world of creativity for the course designers, and the START Saint Paul track promises to be the most challenging in the sport’s history. Stair Turn The last turn before hitting top speeds plunging down the course. Single bump This bump is in one of the course’s sprint sections. Any bobbles or falls here will severely hurt their chances at the podium. BRIDGE JUMP Crossing John Ireland, athletes will face their second “kicker”. To sustain their speed, they will have to absorb the jump, and catch as little air for as possible for acceleration down the course. PETE’S CORNER Large drop kicker This is the steepest drop of the course. Athletes will need to hit it with speed if they’re going to make it up the wall ride that immediately follows. The equalizer. It is the largest wall ride in the event’s history at 16 feet tall. Ideally, athletes want to be near top speed and in front of the pack when they reach the incline on this obstacle. Dutch Mountains The final obstacle of the course and one of its most technical features. Success at this point depends on strategy. These alternating mounds allow for one final passing opportunity prior to the final sprint to the finish line. DOUBLE BUMP Athletes need to time their jump on this double bump feature so they clear the gap, taking off from the top of the first peak and landing on the decline of the second one. you betcha BUMP It comes down to seconds, athletes need to keep their blades on the ice as much as possible to absorb the bump created by this spectator bridge. 06 POCKET GUIDE FINISH POCKET GUIDE 07 RED BULL CRASHED ICE 2012 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP RED BULL CRASHED ICE 2012 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP CRASH COURSE RULES Competition Breakdown CONTACT AND CONDUCT 100 US 75 INT On Thursday and Friday, January 12th and 13th, 200 athletes (100 U.S. and 75 international) will race down the course, one at a time.
