Volume MMXIII, Issue 3 2013 Shepherd’s Way Culmination & Commencement ”I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. I will consider all your works and meditate on all your mighty deeds. Your ways, God, are holy. What god is as great as our God?” Psalm 77:11-13 Residents, trustees, staff, construction representatives and government officials gathered for the ribbon cutting ceremony on July 23, 2013 to mark the completion of our new 90-room healthcare center at Christ’s Home Retirement Community. Congratulatory citations and words of appreciation for the unparalleled services provided by Christ’s Home to senior adults since 1923 were delivered by federal, state, county and township officials. The ribbon cutting at 10:30AM led to an open house for guests to tour the building and enjoy “I never expected refreshments in the various dining areas that will serve our residents. Shepherd’s Way is home to 24 to live in a place Independent Living apartments, 30 private Personal Care rooms, an expanded Skilled Care facility featuring 48 private rooms, and new to Christ’s Home, a 12 room Memory Care wing with private like this.” resident garden. All of these rooms include a private bathroom. After being shown where his new room and dining area will be, one Personal Care resident for the last 18 months said, “I never expected to live in a place like this.” This building provides added features for all of our residents such as a spacious Bistro including covered outdoor seating, a prayer chapel, and Smyth Hall which will host social events, weekly church services, and other retirement community gatherings. Travel Journal by Jim McGovern In 2011, Christ’s Home began supporting two international children’s ministries, Chariots For Hope in Kenya, Africa and Sunshine Ministries in the city of Hyderabad, India. Chariots For Hope is a non-profit agency located in Dresher, Pennsylvania. Sunshine Ministries is a non-profit agency that is based in Hatboro, Pennsylvania. We had relationships with both ministries through staff members that previously worked at Christ’s Home. In February 2013, the Christ’s Home Board of Trustees asked me to visit both of the children’s homes and put some “boots on the ground.” On April 15th, I took off from Newark Liberty International Airport for my first adventure. After traveling over 36,000 miles between April and July (that is the equivalent of one and half times around the globe), I am excited to share with you some highlights from my journeys. Kenya, Africa I arrived in Nairobi on April 17th, along with Bob Feller, Christ’s Home Trustee; Mark Wakeman, Operations Coordinator for Chariots For Hope; and, Gina, my wife. Our mission in Kenya was to visit the Mahiga Children’s Home, meet and interact with the children and train and encourage the staff. This home is part of a network of ten children’s homes in Kenya overseen by Chariots For Hope whose mission is to bring the prospect of hope to the forgotten children of Africa. The Mahiga Children’s Home provides holistic care to over one hundred children, ranging in age from six to nineteen. Many of the children’s backgrounds are very similar: “Mother died during childbirth,” “raised by grandparents in extreme poverty,” “father unknown,” “born as a result of rape,” “mother had HIV/AIDS.” Yet as bleak as these circumstances sound, we were greeted by many happy, beautiful children who were very excited that we had traveled so far to visit with them. Mahiga Children’s Home Staff - We had an opportunity to share with the staff at Mahiga, which is comprised of four women, a groundskeeper, a security guard, a cook and the manager. Together, these eight committed adults care for 105 children. They work for three months at a time and then have two weeks off to visit family. As you can imagine, the work is exhausting. I spoke about the ministry of Christ’s Home and the similarities between the children that we serve. I talked about many issues relating to the care and nurturing of children. Bob Feller also shared from God’s Word how we can be loving leaders. After our day of meeting and speaking with the staff, they shared several insightful comments. Patrick, the groundskeeper said; “We can only do this—to love the children the way God wants us to love, through the love of Christ in our hearts.” Samuel, the security guard, commented that he now feels that he not only needs to know each child by name, but he needs to be a good example and model Christ for them. The staff was thirsty for knowledge and greatly appreciated the time, effort, certificates of appreciation and small gifts that we provided for each of them in recognition of their commitment and dedication to the children at Mahiga. As we sat together that day in a rather small, sparse office and interacted with the staff, there was a bonding and connection based upon our mutual love for vulnerable children despite our language and cultural barriers. Mahiga Children’s Community Visits - The next day, we had the opportunity to go with David Mbugua, Mahiga’s manager, with several of the children as they visited their families. The children visit with their families every three months to stay connected to them. As we were leaving Mahiga, we stopped by the adjacent church to say hello to the Bishop. The Bishop stated how thankful he was for Christ’s Home and Chariots For Hope. He shared an “old Irish” proverb that states “When God closes one door, he opens another.” It was funny to hear an older African pastor quote an Irish proverb, but he was referring to the fact that Mahiga was about to close its doors and discharge all of the children due to a lack of funding, when Christ’s Home stepped in and began supporting the home. www.christshome.org 2 TRAVEL JOURNAL CONTINUED Our first home visit was to the grandparents of James, a 12-year-old blind boy, who Mahiga supports by paying for his schooling at a special school equipped to care for blind children. James was the only child of his mother who passed away shortly after he was born. His mother’s parents have raised him. They seemed to be good people who love James, but they were obviously very poor. They invited us into their home, which consisted of a shack with a tin roof, cardboard walls, and sheets hanging to separate the inside space into rooms. The house was dark from the soot of their cooking fire and lack of windows. James’ grandmother indicated that James wanted to pray with us. So James, who smiled broadly during the entire visit, prayed exuberantly a prayer of joy and thanksgiving. I was very humbled by the prayer of a 12-year-old blind boy from Kenya. We took pictures and talked about James’ eyesight and the hopes that James may one day see. Next, we went to the home of Jane Njeri and Justice, who are twins. They had come to Mahiga when neighbors reported that Jane had been kept out of school to care for her older sister’s baby. The child had been born as the result of incest by their father. When David Mbugua had told Jane and Justice to get ready to visit their parents, they had begged him not to leave them there, and he promised that he wouldn't. Their parents’ "home" was up a very steep hill. We parked at the bottom and climbed up. At the top, we met the parents. The twins, however, were anxious to leave the home and only reluctantly walked back to shake their parents' hands before leaving. As we descended the steep hill, we had to get out of the way of some sheep that came scampering briskly down the hill. This visit was a vivid reminder of the safety and security that Mahiga provides for the children. That afternoon we presented the children with many gifts, including soccer balls, sports equipment, wool hats, scarves, crafts, games, and new shoes along with soccer goals that Bob Feller and I brought from home. Many of the gifts were donated by generous friends and were greatly appreciated by the children. As we left Mahiga Children’s Home the following afternoon, David Mbugua addressed us and the children: “When you go back to America we feel that the bond is stronger than before, may God bless you so much, now we are one family, we have seen each other, we have met, we have talked, shared and we have interacted. We will be praying for you, remember us in your prayers, God bless you so much, we thank you so much. Stuck - After a tearful goodbye at Mahiga, we embarked on the next leg of our journey to Kijabe to visit some friends from the U.S. who were serving at Rift Valley Academy. It rained heavily during the afternoon and the dirt roads were very muddy and slippery. As darkness was approaching around 7:00 pm, we slid off the road and became stuck in the mud. We had planned to reach our destination before dark since we were aware the area was known for violence and robberies, especially toward Westerners. It was dark, our flashlight batteries were dim, and it began to rain again. We prayed for a way out, but did not have many options. Around 9:30 pm, a 4-wheel-drive van came up the road with its headlights piercing the darkness. Benson, a local man, agreed to pull us out with his van using a steel cable. Although we were doubtful, he clearly knew what he was doing and, by the grace of God, Continued on page 4 www.christshome.org 3 TRAVEL JOURNAL CONTINUED was able to pull us free. It felt as if God’s hands were pushing us up that mountain road until we reached the top. Our friends at Rift Valley Academy greeted us with open arms, fed us a hot meal and helped us clean the mud from our clothes. After visiting two other children’s homes, including a baby home, we began our long return journey home. We finally arrived back in the U.S. on April 26th. We were so grateful for our time and really learned to appreciate the amenities we have in the United States. One of the men we met said that “every day is a struggle to live in Kenya” and I now know why he said that. I think it is especially difficult for the children that have so many obstacles to leading a safe, happy life. Please pray for the children and staff at the Mahiga Children’s Home. If you would like to partner with us by supporting a child, please see the form in the enclosed envelope. You can visit www.chariotsforhope.org to learn more about the Mahiga Children’s Home. Hyderabad, India On July 10th, Bob Feller and I started our second mission trip to Hyderabad, India. Our mission was to visit Sunshine Ministries Good Shepherd School and Children’s Home. Sunshine Ministries was started by David and Abigail Babu, former Christ’s Home staff members. India is one third the size of the continental United States, but the population is three times the size of the U.S population. I was struck by how many people there were, everywhere! The traffic was unlike anything you have seen in the United States. There are threewheeled taxis and small motorbikes constantly flowing through the busy traffic honking their horns as a courtesy, to make you aware that they are there. Good Shepherd’s School - After two and a half days of travel we finally arrived and went straight to the school. The children greeted us with songs and a shower of flower petals, along with a flower garland necklace. There were 160 students at the school, thirty of which live there at the children’s home. The children all come from local villages and most of the children come from very impoverished families. The majority of the children come from either Hindu or Muslim families. At the school they have the opportunity to hear and learn about the gospel. On Wednesday July 17, we celebrated the dedication of a new school building, which took several years from planning, fundraising to completion. A substantial gift from Christ’s Home enabled the new school building to be completed. The new building consists of four large classrooms, with the capacity to expand to a second floor in the future, as funds become available. We had the privilege of meeting the builder, a Godly man that had retired from the Iranian Air Force as a MIG 29 pilot. He primarily builds large scale apartment buildings, but heard about the school and wanted to help the school and students by constructing the new building. There was a ribbon cutting ceremony for each classroom, and several people prayed a prayer of dedication for each classroom and the students that would be taught there. Pastor’s Conference - In addition to spending time with the teachers and the students at the Good Shepherd School, we had the opportunity to see some other aspects of Sunshine Ministries. Bob Feller and I both participated in a week-long pastor’s conference for over 50 lay pastors, we attended a class of 60 young women who were graduating from a computer skill center, and saw some of the 20 sewing centers where young women are taught how to sew. You can visit www.sunshine-ministries.org to learn more about Sunshine Ministries. As we participated in a closing ceremony at the school with all of the students and teachers, I was presented with a hand-written letter, which read: “Thank you for coming all the way from the U.S. to spend time with us. Thank you for your love and friendship. We learned from your moral stories, crafts, sports and spoken English class. We were so happy to spend time with you. We appreciate your love and generosity. We are so thankful for the Good Shepherd School and friends like you who are helping us. We will pray to the www.christshome.org 4 SHEPHERD’S WAY CONTINUED The Board of Trustees elected to honor recently retired CEO Rich Smyth with the naming of this community gathering room in recognition of his 20 years Rich presents of service and tireless leadership in seeing the retirement community a plaque of expansion through to completion. appreciation to project consultant At the conclusion of presentations and comments from guest Ron Dyson speakers, Rich shared comments on how the completion of Shepherd’s Way marked the culmination of a 15 year process from concept and design to building and occupation. New CEO John Bryant addressed how this facility marked the commencement of a new era of senior living and medical care at the retirement community, providing the ability to minister to many more senior adults with a full range of essential and state of the art medical services. TRAVEL JOURNAL CONTINUED Lord that you will visit with us again. We wish you a happy journey! Love, the Good Shepherd School, students and staff.” In conclusion, both international children’s ministries are changing lives of their students and their families. They both have solid accounting principles and procedures in place. We met dedicated, committed staff and leaders that truly have a heart for vulnerable children. We observed over 200 children that were happy, healthy, content, safe, secure and well cared for. These children were being taught values and morals and the story of God’s love that will change their lives for eternity. I am so thankful for these opportunities to visit children across the world who at first glance live very different lives, but in so many other ways, have much in common with the children that we have the privilege to serve at Christ’s Home. I truly see this as a natural extension of the ministry of Christ’s Home and pray that you will partner with us in meeting the needs of these very special children. -- Board of Trustees -Donald P.
