Math teaMs Finish in state’s top three - Advance to Finals
All three CHS Math Teams placed among the top three teams in Alabama and were the first place
teams in District I during the first round of the State Math Tournament a written exam hosted at Wallace State
Community College earlier this month.
In the Division II State Written Competion the Geometry Team placed second with 612 points while
Homewood claimed first place with 872 points and Park Crossing was third with 524 team points. Individually
Cameron Cottingham and Mallory Johnson tied for 18 th in the state. The Algebra II Team totaled 469 points to
place 3rd in the state behind Homewood (607 points) and St. Paul’s (488 points). Individual state rankings in
Algebra II were Ann Carol Braswell (8th), Mitchell Seymore (10), Carter Bowen (17), Callie Hollingsworth (22),
and Wheeler Eastman (25).
The Comprehensive Team also claimed third place with 548 points as Homewood (699 points) and St.
Paul’s (554 points) posted the other top two team scores in the state. Among the top individual students on
the Comprehensive Written Test were Will Raney (6th), Ben Ratliff (7th), Molly McLeroy (29), and Emma Hicks
(33). Cullman High School will now advance to the final round of the Alabama State Math Competion to be
held at the University of North Alabama on April 11. The Math Team sponsors are Mrs. Elizabeth Pylant and
Mrs. Janice Burrows.

Choral Department Participates in Festival Disney: The CHS Choral Music Department had a
successful trip to Orlando, FL to compete in Festival Disney. They spent three days singing and going to the
various Disney theme parks. The Women's Choir received a Superior rating, while the Chamber Choir received
High Excellent Ratings. If you would like to come on our trip next year and be part of a great group, sign up for
Concert Choir today! Anyone interested in auditioning for Chamber Choir needs to see Mr. Agnew for
information on audition times and requirements.
Foundation to Host Bearcat Tour and Taste: The Cullman City Schools Foundation 2015 Distinguished
Alumni Awards will be April 17 at 5:00 p.m. The Foundation event will showcase the new high school while
giving participants the opportunity to sample the best foods from around town. In addition, the Foundation
will honor the Teachers of the Year and Alumni recipients. Tickets for the CCS Foundation Tour and Taste are
$25 and may be purchased from Dr. Stephens in the Student Center.

Sports Writers name Bearcats
Coach of the year and All-State
For the second consecutive year The Alabama Sportswriters Association
has named Coach Bobby Meyer the Coach of the Year (pictured right). Coach
Meyer followed up last year’s 5A Coach of the Year with a repeat performance in
the 6A classification. Coach Meyer led the Bearcats to a 24-9 overall record, Elite
Eight appearance, and third place ranking in the final AHSAA 6A poll during their
inaugural season in the 6A classification. The ASWA also named point guard
Lawson Schaffer (pictured below right) to the First Team 6A All State team and
Brontae Harris to the 6A Honorable Mention All State team.

Lawson Schaffer named 6A Player of the Year
The Alabama Sportswriter’s Association named Lawson Schaffer
as their 6A Player of the Year during their annual awards banquet
Thursday in Montgomery. The senior play maker inspired the Cullman
Bearcats to an Elite Eight appearance in AHSAA Tournament play and a
third place ranking in the final 6A poll of the season. During the season
Lawson averaged 21.4 points, 7.1 rebounds, 7.8 assists and 3.5 steals
per game. Lawson was also selected to the all-classifications ASWA
Super Five basketball team.
Bearcats Top Cullman Times All-Area Selections
The Cullman Times recognized the success of the Bearcat basketball programs by naming Baylee
Johnson and Lawson Schaffer as the male and female Players of the Year and Coach Bobby Meyer as the
Coach of the Year. Baylee posted a strong senior season with 21.5 points per game and 4.6 assists in just 24
games following a delay start due to ACL surgery. Christina Skinner and Oakleigh White were also named to
the Cullman Times All-Area Honorable Mention team.
Both Coach Meyer and Lawson were repeat winners of their respective awards. Brontae Harris was
also named to the First Team All-Area Team. Junior Seth Swalve was named to the Second Team All-Area
Team and Jason McAfee was an Honorable Mention selection.

Baseball Wins Second Hoover Classic: The Bearcat Baseball Team won three games Thursday to secure
their second straight Hoover Buc Spring Break Classic Tournament Championship. During the tournament the
Cats won six games. In his 1-0 victory against Thompson in the semifinals, Jesse Scott broke the school record
for consecutive scoreless innings pitched with 28 straight. During the championship game against Hartselle,
the Bearcats won 13-2 and Cole Collins broke the school record for career hits, passing Clay Whittemore who
held the record at 210. Cole now sits atop the record books at 213. Congratulations to Cole. This week, the

number one ranked 6A Bearcats face off with Hartselle for the Area 15 Championship. Tuesday is at Hartselle
and Thursday is at CHS. We would appreciate your support!
Baseball Wed Mar 25: Cullman Varsity Baseball swept Decatur with victories of 6-5 in 8 innings and 7-2 in
the second game. Branch Hill got the win in game one, throwing 2 & 1/3 innings, while striking out 4 batters.
Collins (two RBIs), Fondren (double) and Cuello each collected two hits. Drake Hollingsworth (double), Carter
Bowen and Goodwin each had one. Sam Huser pitched in a sacrifice fly. In game two Carter Bowen threw all
seven innings, giving up two runs, and striking out 15 batters. Owen Lovell launched an early two-run homer,
his fifth of the season, and also ripped an RBI double. Robinson drove in one with a two-base knock of his own,
while Fondren (RBI) and Isaac Willingham both slapped singles.
Baseball JV and FM: Congratulations to both the Freshmen Team and JV Teams for the outstanding
season they are enjoying. The Freshmen won the Grissom tournament and the JV team has a 15-1 record on
the season.
Baseball Honorable Mention All-American: Perfect Game USA recently designated Owen Lovell as an
Honorable Mention All-American when it released selections for their high school underclassmen All-American
teams.
Bass team Places: The Bearcat Bass Fishing duo of Jacob Smith and Kody Kite placed seventh among 120
boats in the Lake Tuscaloosa Tournament.
Golf VM Tue Mar 24: The varsity men's golf team defeated Arab by a score of 161-165 at their match on
Tuesday at Cherokee Ridge Country Club. Individual scores included Luke Wilson 38, Conner Stevens 39,
Weston Rakestraw 40, and Dean Meyer 44.
Soccer VM Sat March 28: The Varsity fell to Fort Payne 5-2. Miguel Tizapa had both goals and was assisted
by Isaac Rodriguez and Luis Rodriguez. KJ Potter had 8 saves. The Varsity tied Florence 1-1. Miguel Tizapa
scored from a Ben Walker assist. KJ Potter had 5 saves.
Soccer VM Fri Mar 27: The Varsity defeated Collinsville 3-0. Isaac Rodriguez scored two goals, one
assisted by Cole Gerding and the other unassisted. Miguel Tizapa also scored from a Seth Andrews assist. KJ
Potter had 4 saves. The Freshmen defeated Rudd Middle School for their first victory as a team. Samy Arzola
scored on a Jesus Radilla assist and Luis Gante scored from an Alex Lynn assist.
Soccer VM Thu March 26: The Varsity defeated 6A defending champions Homewood 4-0. Peyton Brown
opened up scoring off a Ben Walker assist. Isaac Rodriguez scored off a Miguel Tizapa assist. Tizapa turned in
the next goal off a Tucker Van Dyke assist. Ben Walker concluded scoring from a Miguel Tizapa assist. KJ
potter had 15 saves. The JV Boys fell to Homewood 4-0. Jaron Potter had 24 saves.
Soccer VM Tue Mar 24: The Varsity fell to Fort Payne 6-3. Peyton Brown scored off a Ben Walker corner.
Miguel Tizapa scored of a Ben Walker assist. Ben Walker scored off a Yusuke Shimizu assist. KJ Potter had 11
saves. The JV Men lost to Fort Payne 4-0. Jaron Potter had 11 saves.
Soccer VM Claim Section Title: The Varsity defeated Brewer 6-0, on March 20, to claim the Section 16
Title and home field advantage in the playoffs. Ben Walker had a hat trick, Miguel Tizapa had 2 goals, and
Peyton Brown had one goal. Ben Walker had 2 assists; Seth Andrews, Cole Gerding, Garrett Manley and Isaac
Rodriguez each had an assist. KJ Potter had 7 saves.
Soccer VW March 19: The Lady Bearcats won 3-0 to ensure a place in the playoffs for the first time in the
last four years. Kaitlin Cook, Ninfa Moreno, and Ashlyn Cook all had a goal apiece. Abby Branham notched two
assists. This win extends their record to 13-2, which breaks the school record for most wins in a season. They
also set a school record for most goals in a season with 55, passing the 2005 record of 52 goals.
Softball Gulf Shores Classic: The Bearcat softball team picked up two wins against East Limestone and
Lincoln. Olivia Schwaiger pitched a no hitter versus East Limestone and only gave up one earned run versus
Lincoln. Tiffani Schwaiger hit a home run against East Limestone. Kaitlyn Brannon had 2 RBIs and 2 hits, Claire
Jenkins and Hannah Morton had back to back home runs.

Tennis Austin Invitational: In the 6A-7A Austin High School tournament this past weekend the #2 doubles
teams of Hunter Manley/Parker Adams and #3 team of Emily Mullins and Emily Graves advanced to the semifinals. Emily Graves represented CHS in the finals at #6.
Tennis Tue March 24: The Tennis teams defeated Ft. Payne with individual match winners including
#1 Olyvia Sharpton, #2 Lilli Watson, #3 Kacie Donaldson, #4 Kate Hood, #5 Gentry Bussman, and #6 Emily
Graves. In doubles, Sharpton/Watson won 10-0, Donaldson/Hood won 10-3, and Graves/Mullins won 10-3.
For the men Matthew Davis won at the #1 position, Parker Adams at #2, Jacob Lambert at #3, Hunter
Manley at #4, Drew Fillinger at #5, and Austin Mullins at #6. In doubles, Davis/Camp won 10-0, Manley/Adams
won 10-3, and Lambert/Fillinger won 10-3.
Tennis Mon March 23: Both teams defeated West Point. Matthew Davis and Donnie Camp won at the
number 1 doubles position. In singles, Matthew Davis, Donnie Camp, Parker Adams, Hunter Manley, Blake
Spradlin, and Austin Mullins won their matches. The girls swept West Point 9-0: In doubles, Olyvia
Sharpton/Lilli Watson, Kate Hood/Gentry Bussman, Emily Mullins/Emily Graves, and Nikki Rakestraw/Maddie
Graves won their matches. In singles competition match winners were Olyvia Sharpton #1 Singles, Lilli Watson
#2, Kacie Donaldson #3, Kate Hood #4, Gentry Bussman #5, Emily Graves #6, Nikki Rakestraw #7, and Maddie
Graves #8.
Track Meet: This past Saturday, Cullman's Track and Field team had a few athletes at the Scottsboro
Invitational and invitation only Mobile Meet of Champions. Kyle Norris had the premier performance of the
weekend and the school year for the distance runners. He entered the invitation only 2 mile event in Mobile
seeded 12th out of 16 racers from Alabama and perimeter states. On the final lap, Kyle over took the leaders
to capture first place in the race become the top ranked two miler in Alabama across all classifications.
Garrison Hill took 5th place in the Mobile Meet of Champions Pole Vault competition. Olivia Kontogeorge
placed 2nd at the Scottsboro Invitational in the Triple Jump with a jump of 33-10.
Track Fri March 21: Cullman's track and field program was host to 31 teams and over 700 athletes at
the Cullman Classic this Friday, March 21. The men’s team placed second with 102 points behind the first
place 7A James Clemens team. Finishing in the top three for the Bearcats were: 1 st 1600 meter run - Kyle
Norris (4:28); 1st 3200 meter run - Kyle Norris (10:04); 3rd 300 hurdles - Logan Shugarts (46.7); 3rd 4x400 relay
- Jack Griffin, Logan Shugarts, Kyle Norris, Walker Caretti (3:44); 1st 4x800 relay - Walker Caretti, Tucker
Franey, Kyle Norris, Joey Franklin (8:32); 1st Pole Vault - Garrison Hill (13-06); and 1st Discus - Austin Elrod (13700).
The Women’s Team also placed second with 124.5 points behind 7A James Clemens. Athletes finishing
in the top three were: 1st 100 hurdles - Savanna Canter (15.99);2nd 300 hurdles - Savanna Canter (51.22);1st
4x400 relay - Anna Franklin, Lexy Sivley, Savanna Canter, Marisa Franklin (4:37);3rd 4x800 relay - Marisa
Franklin, Rachael Collins, Hillary Crider, Lexy Sivley (11:17); 1st High Jump - Kelsey Wren (5-02);2nd Pole Vault Ann Carol Braswell (8-06)and 3rd Anna Franklin (7-06); 3rd Triple Jump - Olivia Kontogeorge (33-02); 3rd Shot
Put - Kristina Muller (30-01) and 2nd Discus - Emily Johnson (90-10).
