Make a noise in libraries 2 – 13 June 2014 Come along to Make A Noise In Libraries - MANIL- a two week programme of events for the blind and visually impaired held in libraries across Kirklees. MANIL is a national event, held every year to promote public library services for blind and visually impaired customers. Did You Know? Make a Noise in Libraries Fortnight 2 – 13 June 2014 Welcome to Make a Noise in Libraries! MANIL is an annual campaign to bring public libraries and blind and partially sighted people together to improve access to books and information. Kirklees Libraries and Kirklees Transcription Service have come together with a number of partner organisations to present a wide range of events for all ages. All our events across the region are free and although aimed at people with a visual impairment, everyone is welcome. There is no need to book for most of them, you can ‘drop-in’ at your convenience. And don’t forget, during Make a Noise in Libraries fortnight (2-13 June) there will be free loan and reservation of Audio books for all members of Kirklees Libraries. Author Talk - Steve Hobson Light Reading Room, 1.30pm Steve talks about his latest work “A Blind Man In The Land Of Zen”. His personal story of one week’s retreat and a spiritual journey. He was born in Leicester in 1952. He has worked as a teacher of English and Communications, as a lecturer in Theatre Arts, a Counsellor, a radio presenter, a videographer, and a writer and poet. He was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1992, and was registered blind eight years later. He has had one volume of poems published, and a book about classical music, Joining the Dots. He is married, and lives in Yorkshire. Taking Note - Note Taking Committee Room, 9.30am – 2.30pm A fascinating exhibition of how equipment and technology for people with a visual impairment has developed over the decades. Presented by Kirklees Vision Impairment Network Free refreshments available in the Light Reading Room throughout the day Batley Library and Information Centre Coffee Morning Wednesday 4th June, 10.30am Thelma Wilson speaks of her experiences with Guide Dogs and the Blind, bringing along her four-legged friend for us to meet. Free admission. Refreshments provided. All donations will go to Guide Dogs for the Blind. Crochet In The Dark Friday 6th June 2014, 10.00am – 11.30am Our regular crochet group meets for a light hearted yet informative visual impairment special. Try reading a Braille crochet pattern, and using visual impairment simulation specs. Entrance free, refreshments provided. Donations welcomed. Author Talk - Diane Allen Monday 9th June 2014, 2.00pm – 3.00pm Join us when we welcome Yorkshire Saga author Diane Allen and hear not only about her experiences as a writer but also her background in the world of large print and audio books. Diane was born in Leeds and grew up on a family farm in the Yorkshire Dales and is a life-long lover of books and reading. Children from across Kirklees are invited to visit their local mobile library and enter the Crack The Code competition.
