Director’s Message
by Kevin Stilley
It's looking very spring like today. Ornamental trees are blooming, birds are
singing, the grass is greening. Life is good.
I want to apologize for the errors in my column and the information for the drive and eat
tour in last month's Starterator. At Linda Higdon's suggestion, we'll call it an early April
Fool's Day prank. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!!!
The “Drive ‘n Eat Tour” to Paxico and Wamego was a great day. Several members
turned out in their AEV's to shop for antiques, sample wines and jellies, and enjoy a great
dinner. Thanks to Tom and Diane for setting this one up. Hopefully the rest of you can
join us on a tour in the near future.
On a personal front, I have lost my storage building of 13 years. Boy, can you accumulate
a lot of stuff in that time. I have 2 cars moved, and MOST of the other clutter. There is
still one car to go, the one that doesn't want to start, and about enough parts to build one
more. It will be divided into two spaces now, but both are fairly close to the old unit and to
my mechanic.
We had a National Tour planning meeting on April 4th at the Country Inn & Suites in Kansas City Kansas. This is the host hotel for the first 2 nights of the tour. Our regular membership meeting is on the 10th in the usual Topeka location. I hope to see you at one or
the other or both.
Happy Spring Motoring!
Kevin

The Sunflower Region of the CHVA held their March meeting on Friday March 13, 2015 at the
Holcom Park Rec Center in Lawrence, Kansas.
The meeting was called to order at 7:00 pm by Director Kevin Stilley. There were 24 members present. Rich
Gibbs made a motion to accept the minutes as printed in the Starterator. Kelly Flory seconded the motion. The
motion was approved. The treasures report was read by Don Beck. Rich Gibbs made a motion to accept the
treasurers report as read. Linda Higdon seconded the motion. The motion was approved.
Old Business
Kevin Stilley updated the National Tour itinerary. Kevin said he was able to change the motel dates. The Flint
Hills Discovery Center will open for us at 9:00.
New Business
It was noted that there was an error in the Starterator. It was Sharon Eulert that has been in the hospital not
Earlene Richert.
It was brought to our attention that there is no contact person for the Topeka or Lawrence areas when members are hospitalized or there is a death of a member or members family.
Some of the club members shared their memories of Gary Weber, CHVA member from California.
Steve Hartwich reminded us that it has been 20 years since Steve Jewett passed away. He suggested that
members of the club write down some things they remember about Steve, photos would be welcome also, to
be published in the Starterator.
Sherri McIntyre brought a quilted sunflower banner that could be used at our National Tour.
Show and Tell
Danny Downs brought his model street sweepers that were in the Starterator article recently.
Don Beck brought an old MoPar emergency reflector.
Don Griffith brought some old photos of cars that belonged to his uncle.
Tom Millard brought a couple of interesting books, Setting The Pace Oldsmobiles First 100 Years and DimeStore Dream Parade, Popular Culture 1925-1955.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:45 pm.
After the meeting was adjourned Rich Gibbs was surprised with a little retirement celebration.
And a surprise it was! I could not quite figure why the meeting ended so soon. We still had the meeting room for well over
an hour. After all was over, It became apparent why everyone had arrived early for the meeting and why there were so
many members present.
I sincerely wish to say THANK YOU to all that attended and prepared the surprise and all the goodies including a carrot cake (one of my favorite food groups)
with an image of my ‘59 Buick Electra. The fun was three identical retirement
cards from three different people. On my last day at work, the company had a
catered dinner and after some more retirement cards of which I received a fourth
card that matched the three previous cards.
I am looking forward to retirement and havilng more time to work on my “toys”
and travel. Again...THANK YOU for a wonderful surprise from a great group!

Along the Action Era Highways
1940
FORD and
MERCURY
“More attractive and
more comfortable”.
The 1940 Ford, Mercury and
Lincoln line of cars were the
best looking Ford’s to come out
of Dearborn yet. Notwithstanding the ‘32 and ‘36’s, etc. So
many improvements went into
the 1940 line of Ford’s yet they
still looked like a Ford.
Since the full article is printed
across this and the following
page, I will not go into repeating
it all here. Suffice it to say that
the 60-horsepower Ford V8 continued on as the base engine,
and the 221 CID, 85-horsepower
V8 engine served as standard
engine in the De Luxe Ford line,
as well as in the standard Ford
station wagon.
1940 Mercury’s were powered
by a 239 CID, 95-horsepower
version of the Ford V8. The
1940 Lincoln-Zephyr, briefly
mentioned on page two of this
article, and the new Continental
used a 292 CID V12 engine that
developed 120 horsepower.
Finally the luxurious 1940 Lincoln line had a 150-horsepower,
414 CID V12 engine. This
would be the last year for the
large displacement Lincoln V12
engines, as the 1941 models
would share the 292 CID V12
engine with the 1941 LincolnZephyr line.
