DESIGN SHANGHAI 2015
COLLECTIBLE DESIGN HALL AND MUST-SEE
CHINESE DESIGNERS
MARCH 2015
MUST-SEE CHINESE DESIGNERS AT DESIGN SHANGHAI
China’s design scene is experiencing a very exciting time, producing a range of home-grown talent
that has an appreciation for quality and craftsmanship. Design Shanghai (27-30 March) will
showcase a wealth of the best design names that China has to offer.
From one-off and limited edition collectible design pieces to new furniture ranges, Design Shanghai
promises to be the place to be to discover cutting edge Chinese design.
The use of quality material is common amongst the different approaches by emerging Chinese
designers exhibiting at Design Shanghai. Frank Chou founded Frank Chou Design Studio in 2012 in
Beijing. His collection, on display in the Contemporary Design Hall, is characterised by the use of
wool, quality metals and dark shades. The Kuan Chair, Ring Lamp, Nov Sofa and Ping Screen form a
subtle yet elegant collection combining western and oriental cultures, representing a style Frank
refers to as ‘contemporary oriental manner’.
Shanghai-based design studio Design MVW, founded by Ming Xu and Virginie Moriette, will unveil its
‘Nothing is Everything’ collection, which includes six pieces of furniture made of Oxidized brass that
mix sculptural and artistic qualities. The studio will also launch ‘Yun’, a functional and decorative
dividing screen consisting of disc panels linked together to create an organic structure of marble and
brass.
The event will present an exciting mix of designs created with 3D technology. Zai Ye Design, a
cutting edge working platform for independent designers, will be launching a new collection of 3D
printed resin vases created with 3D City.
Well-known Chinese artist Wang Yuyang is also using 3D processes to create a site-specific work
installed inside Jean Prouvé’s 6x9 Demountable House, for Swiss luxury brand, Bally. Yuyang will
present ‘Equip’, a sculpture that reflects the aesthetics and philosophy of Jean Prouvé’s House and
its relevance in China's contemporary society. The sculpture entails a 3D process that transforms the
linear dimensions of the house through binary code, which then creates a 3D rendering. Next, local
craftsmen have translated the renderings into handmade sculptural form using various materials
specified by Yuyang such as copper, wood, steel and plastic.

“Design Shanghai is an incubator of local talent, where visitors can experience new products from
various emerging Chinese designers across the Contemporary and Classic halls. The four-day event
testifies the exciting shift the local design industry is going through, with creativity, crafts and
innovation combining to contribute, alongside the already strong manufacturing industry, to one of the
most exciting changes China is currently experiencing.”
The Contemporary and Classic halls include Chinese designers and brands such as MRT Design,
MZGF Furniture, Amelie Shen, ZP&PY, Yi Yang Yi Sheng, Zai Ye Design, Design Republic, and

COLLECTIBLE DESIGN HALL
The Collectible Design Hall at Design Shanghai will launch for the first time in China a platform to
explore the realm of limited edition design and its crossovers between the art and design world from
China and the West. The hall will showcase top designers and galleries that represent the best of
collectible design from Europe, the US and the Asia Pacific region with a special focus on China.
Morgan Morris, Director and Curator of the Collectible Design Hall, has selected some of today’s
most exciting designers and galleries to be showcased within this new initiative for a collectible design
hub in Shanghai.
Morris said: “We are excited to present the new wave of Chinese designers working with limited
edition collectible design in a rigorous creative manner that are currently launching a new trend in
China and bringing this arena to the forefront. The emerging talents that will be exhibited present new
design values to the rest of the world that are ‘created in China’ not ‘made in China’. Chinese
designers across the Collectible Design Hall include Shao Fan, Song Tao, Shi Jianmin, Jing Jing
(Naihan Li), Liu Feng and Guo Bin to name a few.”
The hall will showcase top designers and their representative galleries including Carpenters
Workshop Gallery; Zaha Hadid, represented by David Gill; John C Taylor Ltd; Marcel Wanders
for Baccarat, Christofle and Personal Editions; Long Ji Zao Ban; Method Studio and Xin Dong
Cheng Space for Contemporary Art.
Internationally known designer Marcel Wanders will present collectible designs specially created for
Baccarat and Christofle, together with his Personal Editions. Wanders will display a selection of “One
Minute Delft” pieces alongside a new edition of his Delft Blue chandelier.
Zaha Hadid’s design will be presented by the David Gill Gallery, including the extraordinary Mercuric
marble table collection, produced in Italy by Citc. Hadid’s Luna table, Calla fireplace and Tela shelving
system will also be on display. David Gill is a pioneering gallerist offering 20th Century and
contemporary design, who produced some of the first furniture collections from Zaha Hadid to Mattia
Bonetti.
Artist and designer Arik Levy will be represented by the Louise Alexander Gallery. Levy’s signature
Rock pieces, light sculptures, installations and other works, such as the Fractal Cloud will also be on
show in the Collectible Design Hall.
Bridging the design gap between China and the rest of the world is the Xin Dong Cheng Space for
Contemporary Art, founded in 2000 in Beijing. Xin Dong Cheng will bring together the works of three
generations of Chinese designers, from Shao Fan to Shi Jianmin and Guo Bin.
Highlighting the historical links between France and Shanghai, Shanghai Art Deco will show iconic
historical collectible furniture from the Art Deco period made in Shanghai in the 1930’s. Key collectible
design pieces in the inimitable “Shanghai style” will be shown for the first time in the Collectible
Design Hall.
Carpenters Workshop Gallery, known for producing and exhibiting functional sculptures by
international rising and established artists, will present works by Humberto & Fernando Campana,
Stuart Haygarth and Studio Drift amongst others. Carpenters Workshop Gallery’s main aim is to
transcend borders, allowing visitors to experience the intersection between art and design.

printed limited edition pieces by Zhang Zoujie. They will also show some of the best in US design
talent with works by the Haas Brothers and David Wiseman.
In addition to a wonderful selection of galleries, there will be the presence of independent designers.

furniture brand Sé, will show pieces from Collection III by Nika Zupanc, celebrating the Collection’s
launch in the Asian market.
