National Scholarships & Fellowships Program (NS&FP), Emory University
http://nationalawards.college.emory.edu
Application Procedures: Churchill Scholarship (2015-16)
Next Steps: Emory may nominate two candidates. There is no campus interview. The Churchill
Screening Committee, which is composed of former Churchill Scholars who are, for the most part,
academic scientists, reviews applications and selects approximately 25 finalists. Finalists are notified in
January. Finalists are interviewed by phone by the Foundation’s Executive Director shortly after being
notified of selection as finalists. Awards are made shortly after—and sometimes during—the phone
interview.
NOTES
Consultation (Step 1)
Make contact with the National Scholarships and Fellowships program (NS&FP) to discuss universities
and courses of study, your eligibility and application competitiveness, and your recommender selection.
We encourage you to attend the UK Awards workshops offered Spring 2015.
Recommenders (Steps 2, 10)
In consultation with a NS&FP advisor, determine your four letter of recommendation writers. Your
letters must come from faculty in fields related to your STEM research. If you list an NSF REU, internship,
or other similar research experience in your application, you must have a recommendation from at least
one of your supervisors. Contact potential recommenders to confirm they are willing to write letters.
Advice on selecting and contacting potential recommenders is available on NS&FP’s Blackboard
Organization site, “National Scholarships & Fellowships Resources” in the “Churchill” section.
Instructions for recommenders:
•
Letters should address the applicant’s academic strength and ability to successfully complete
the proposed University of Cambridge degree program.
•
Electronic submission of letters is preferred. Please create a PDF of your letter, signed and on
letterhead, and send along with the completed and signed Churchill Scholarship
Recommendation form as an email attachment to oue.nationalawards@emory.edu.
•
If this is not possible, we will accept hard copies. Recommenders may drop off or mail letters,
or applicants may pick up and hand-carry letters (in sealed envelopes with the recommender’s
signature across the seal) to the OUE front desk (300 White Hall).
Mailing address: Dr. Megan Friddle
White Hall, Suite 300
301 Dowman Drive
Atlanta, GA 30322
•
Recommendations should be submitted no later than 4:00 PM, October 15, 2015.
No later than two weeks before letters are due, provide your recommenders with a late-stage draft of
your Proposed Program of Study and Personal Statement Essays.
If one of your recommenders is not able to meet the October 15 due date, please contact our office.

Application Procedures: Churchill Scholarship (2015-16)
Personal Statement (Steps 3, 9, and 14)
Draft and revise your personal statement. Be prepared to allow time to write and receive feedback on
multiple drafts from a NS&FP advisor.
Advice on writing the personal statement may be found on NS&FP’s Blackboard site. You should also
refer to your notes from the Spring 2015 Workshops.
Proposed Program of Study (Steps 4, 9, and 14)
Draft and revise your statement of grant purpose. Be prepared to allow time to write and receive
feedback on multiple drafts from an NS&FP advisor.

You should also refer to your notes from the Spring 2015 Workshops.
Contact Potential Research Mentors (Step 5)
Make contact with potential research mentors at the University of Cambridge, briefly explaining your
proposed research and your interest in attending Cambridge. If a potential mentor indicates interest in
your research, ask whether she or he would be willing to provide a letter of interest for inclusion with
your Churchill application. Letters of interest should be addressed to the applicant.
Note: Candidates in Pure and Applied Mathematics are not required to obtain a letter from a potential
research mentor.
Online Application (Step 6)
Register and complete the online application form at http://churchill.usapplications.org/.
DO NOT SUBMIT your application. A NS&FP advisor will authorize you to submit later, if nominated.
GRE or MCAT (Steps 7)
Schedule and take the GRE General Test by September 1, 2015.
Outside Transcript(s) (Step 8)
If you have attended another college or university to take courses for credit (not including Emory
sponsored study abroad), order an official electronic or hard copy of your transcript from that school.
We require a transcript from other schools only IF the course names and grades are NOT listed
individually on your Emory transcript.
Request that these transcripts be delivered by October 15, 2015 to:
