The Clothesline Project began in 1990 as a visual display of shirts to bring awareness to experiences of sexual violence. These shirts are created either by the survivor or by a family, friend, and/or loved one. The art display was created with the purpose of educating others about sexual violence and is also meant to be an important part of the healing process for survivors of sexual violence. Survivors of all identities are welcome to be a part of the shirt-making process and the public event. In the original Clothesline Project, a color code was created to give a visual ‘statistic’ of different types of violence women faced. WHITE for individuals who have died as a result of sexual violence YELLOW/BEIGE for survivors of dating/ domestic violence RED/PINK/ORANGE for survivors of rape/ sexual assault BLUE/GREEN for survivors of incest/child sexual abuse PURPLE/LAVENDER for survivors attacked because of their sexual orientation GRAY for survivors of gang rape BLACK for survivors of sexual harassment If you are a survivor of sexual violence or know others who have been impacted by sexual violence, we would like to invite you to create a shirt for yourself or for others you care about.
