Our upcoming meeting is dedicated to the talented young engineers of our beautiful State. Please make sure you attend this important meeting to provide your support to these outstanding students that will be awarded by the ASCE Colorado Section. This is also a great opportunity to get to know your potential new team members, as many of these students will enter the local workforce soon! In addition, select students will also receive scholarships from our annual Jacqueline Arcaris Scholarship fund. During this event, you will also get to meet our Region 7 Director, Mr. F. Jay Burress, PE, ENV SP, MASCE, who will assist us with the presentation of the awards and discuss an overview of the society with an emphasis on the recent board actions and decisions. We want to be sure we are prepared to pro- PRESENTATION ASCE Colorado Section is proud to welcome F. Jay Burress, P.E., M. ASCE, to the April Student Award Night. Mr. Burress is Region 7 Director, and will present on the latest news from ASCE, including projects and initiatives that continue to promote the importance of our profession. F. Jay Burress is senior project manager at Shafer, Kline & Warren, Inc. (SKW), was elected director of Region 7 of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) for a three year term ending in October, 2016. As region director, Burress serves on the society’s board of directors, representing the member sections from Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming. Burress has been designing transportation projects for the past 26 years. He has been at SKW since 1999, and now leads their transportation department. He has designed a variety of projects throughout the years including interstate reconstruction projects and major arterial road reconstructions. Burress is licensed to practice engineering in four states and is certified as an ISI Environmental Specialist. An active ASCE member, Burress has been involved in the society in a variety of ways while in school and throughout his career. In college, he served as student chapter president at the University of Texas. He then went on to hold numerous positions with the Kansas City section’s committees and board. Burress has also served as Kansas City section president. On a society level, Burress has sat on the Committee on Employment of Civil Engineers, the Finance Committee, and the ASCE Section Website of the Year selection committee. He co-authored ASCE Manual 103: Guide to Hiring & Retaining Great Civil Engineers. He was a Region 7 Governor for 5 years, and for the 2011-2012 term, Burress was the ASCE Region 7 vice-chair. In 2009, he was the chairman of volunteers at the 139th ASCE Annual Conference held in Kansas City, Mo. Burress earned his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Texas. He also holds a bachelor’s in zoology from the University of Arkansas, and an MBA in finance from the University of Kansas. He is a resident of Stilwell, Kansas, where he lives with his wife and 3 daughters. TRANSPORTATION PRESENTATION IN MAY The Transportation Development Institute has a great presentation planned for the May 21 Section Meeting. Buckley Air Force Base – Runway Rehabilitation— The Buckley Air Force Base Runway Rehabilitation is an award winning project that was completed in September 2014. The project was awarded the ACPA – Colorado/Wyoming chapter award for excellence! It has also been nominated for a national award by Buckley Air Force Command. Construction included replacement of approximately 140,265 SY concrete sections of the runway, correction of the runway profile grade which involved lowering the north end of the runway by approximately 7 ft and correcting the taxiway and apron profile to match the runway grade. New features included 10 ft asphalt shoulders with underdrain, installation of an arresting system and new airfield lighting with NAVAIDs. Speaker Biography: Kenny Maenpa is the Practice Group Leader for Aviation of North American Infrastructure (NAI) for the Rocky Mountain area of Jacobs Engineering Group, Inc. He has a bachelor’s of science in aviation management from Metropolitan State University Denver. He has 21 years of airport management experience at four Colorado airports (Centennial, Garfield County, Eagle County), including 11 ½ years with Rocky Mountain Metro Airport in Jefferson County as Airport Director. Kenny has proven leadership in the airport community and is currently the past-president of the Colorado Airport Operators Association and served as vice-chair on the Colorado Aeronautical Board, appointed by Governor Hickenlooper from 2011 to 2014. He is a member of American Association of Airport Executives. Kenny understands the value of relationships and offers a unique insight in airport management through his professional and leadership style.
