Contact: Tony@acorngroundwork.co.uk 07803 961804 Welcome to our new junior members and welcome back to those returning from last year. I hope that you are all as excited as I am about the coming season. We had a fantastic 2014 season and of course a wonderful section of over 300 juniors. As those of you with children in the U’5-9 age groups and boys in the U’10-12 age groups know, the success of our Junior Section is such that demand for spaces is significantly above the spaces we have available with many on our waiting list that had to be disappointed. It is very important that we limit training group sizes to maintain quality of coaching, offer sufficient match playing opportunities and ensure the safety of our members. Many of our Juniors have been preparing for the outdoor season at our Indoor Training. Our head coach, Ben Hudson has revamped winter training and we have introduced weekday training for U’8-9s at Glyn School. In addition to this, Andrew Minhinnick has run indoor cricket matches for the U’11-12s, involving intra and inter club games. Season dates Welcome Evening Friday 17 April at 6.30pm Girls’ Open Day Sunday 19 April at 10am U’12-18 Boys and U’10-15 Girls Monday 20 April at 6.30pm U’5-9 Girls and Boys, U’10-11 Boys Training starts Friday 24 April at 6.30pm Awards Evening 4 September. Our online membership application system continues to be improved by Allan Fairlie-Clarke of Fairlie Creative who has donated his expertise and time yet again. The Junior Section website, http://colts.epsomcricketclub.co.uk , will be everyone’s first port of call for information on training arrangements, contact details and activities throughout the season. We now have a webmaster, Richard Perriman, who will be updating the site regularly, including photos of players in action (so please send him any you take that you are proud of and are happy to share with us all). As well as organising indoor activities we have also been busy planning for the outdoor season. Ben will be happy to discuss our coaching plans for the season at the Welcome Evening. The Girls squad will be playing more friendlies this year as well as in tournaments. The U’8- U17 Colts play in the Gladys Chitty league and the U’9-17 Colts also play in the main WSYC league. From age 13, players can be involved in the Surrey Trust and Development Leagues in mixed age teams. We also have a more formal pathway for introducing junior cricketers to senior cricket as and when they are ready and able. New for 2015 is the NatWest U’19 T20 Competition (see separate section). On the social side, Friday BBQ and Bar traditions continue (thanks to you parents who volunteer to grill burgers and pull pints). Monday night parents are welcome to stay for a drink too and if anyone wishes to instigate a Monday BBQ that would be great. We are planning to run more parent/family friendly socials throughout the season. As with the adult section, this is very much your club so we welcome anyone who has suggestions for ways for us to add to our members’ experience with the club or who wants to get involved in whatever way. Looking forward to seeing you all at the club for a fun and successful season. Haidee Allen Junior Section Chairman Pre Season Easter Holiday Courses Opportunities for outdoor practice at the club are limited early in the season as the ground is not ready for cricket use until just before the junior training sessions start on 20 April. This is particularly relevant to U’89s who are likely to be new to pairs cricket, U’10s who will be playing league hardball matches for the first time and U’11s and U’12s being introduced to conventional cricket. In order for our junior members to have the confidence and ability to play in matches (for the club or their school) in late April and early May, any match play practice pre season they can get would be a huge advantage to players and the club (and their school). Our partner, Twenty20 Cricket Company, is again running Season Preparation Courses during the Easter Holidays. For more information and to book please go to www.twenty20cricketcompany.com/ cricket-courses. There are also Easter cricket courses run by Surrey CCC at various locations and for children from age 3. Please see http://surreyccc.e-availability.com/? dm_i=1AEV,37RIH,C2BDGS,BILNR,1 Twenty20 will also be running camps during the May and summer holidays at the club – hugely popular with our members (who get a discount for these camps) ECC is holding open days on both 18th and 19th April. 18th April will be welcome day , with an interclub match, starting from 12:30 followed by Food and Drinks in the Bar from 7pm. All welcome, especially any new players who intend to join this season. On the 19th there is a Girl’s open day from 10am-1pm and a kids v parents match from 2pm. Surrey NatWest U’19 T20 Competition This new competition is run for and by U’14-19s and Dan Allen and Nik Vidler are captain and vice-captain of our team - The Epsom Racers. There will be around five T20 matches after the exam season leading up to a County final at the end of the school holidays. The idea is to emulate the atmosphere and pazazz of the NatWest T20 Blast many of you will have experienced at the Kia Oval – music (not sure about tongues of fire yet!) booming for 4s and 6s, bar open for spectators and food available. Home matches will be on Thursday evenings and we hope that many of you will come along to join in the fun and support our team. E.C.C Welfare Officer Ladies Update years of age with the aim to make Spotlight U’19 T20 Finally the new season is here! As the Ladies Team newly appointed Captain I am very much looking forward to supporting them this season and hope it will be a successful one! I would like to say thank you to Rachel Sunderland for being our Captain the last couple of years, she did a great job! However, Rachel hasn’t got away that easily as she has agreed to be my second. We have once again entered the Surrey Trust League Silver division along with five other teams. There are two new teams in the league this year; South Nutfield and Godalming, which I am sure will bring us a new challenge! The team is also taking part in the Banstead Ladies Day on 18th April. Cricket will be played throughout the day and then fajitas & cocktails in the evening. We have taken part in the Ladies day previously and it always turns out to be a fun day! We are hoping to arrange a few social nights, a bit of team bonding is always fun! If you have any ideas then please get in touch! Good luck and let’s play cricket! Gemma Elsbury Hello.
