Happy End-of-Summer!
This is my favorite time of year in Michiana. No, not because it’s football season (although a big
factor), but because we have some of our best weather, fall colors and great new programs from PBS
and WNIT.
WNIT’s regional talent competition, “Michiana’s Rising Star,” was fantastic. I hope you watched! I
can’t say enough to thank our staff members and dedicated Board of Directors for their hard work.
While we are extremely happy with this first year’s effort, we are already making adjustments and
plans for next year.
For those of you who missed the program, please sample the talent of our finalists. Go to our
website: www.wnit.org/risingstar.
In your last Planner, I asked for input to a potential program schedule change. After reviewing your
comments, it appears the change will work. Starting in September, look for the PBS NewsHour to
move to 6pm, followed by “Experience Michiana” with Gordy Young at 7pm. But, for those who
still prefer the 7-8pm time period for NewsHour, you may watch it at that time on the WNIT
INFocus channel, 34.2. Thanks to all of you who provided your comments and suggestions. What
other station would ask you for your input? You will also be pleased to know that both the PBS
NewsHour and Charlie Rose will be expanding to weekend editions on WNIT.
Another recent local hit for WNIT is “Our Town: Elkhart.” I love this series of “Our Town”
programs because WNIT recruits community videographers to show viewers their town through
their eyes, not ours. It’s a unique and valuable perspective. We premiered the program at a reception
in Elkhart’s Lerner Theater Crystal Ballroom and on air during our August membership drive.
Now, looking forward to October, WNIT takes great pleasure to honor one of the founders of
Michiana Public Broadcasting with a special program, “Legends of our Time: Ernestine Raclin.”
Mrs. Raclin has done so much for our own organization, and her philanthropy has made such an
impactful difference with many of our community non-profit and educational organizations.
Please watch the story of this classy, caring, remarkable woman.
As usual, I have too much to share and not enough space. Perhaps the editor of the Planner will
give me two pages next issue? Happy viewing, everyone!
Sincerely,
Greg Giczi

Peg + Cat
On Monday, October 7, PBS KIDS will
premiere Peg + Cat, a new animated
preschool series that follows the adorable, spirited Peg and her sidekick Cat
as they embark on adventures and learn
foundational math concepts and skills.
Co-creators Billy Aronson and Jennifer
Oxley have teamed with The Fred Rogers Company to bring young viewers a
new way to experience math through Peg
and Cat’s relatable, and often hilarious,
adventures.
Peg + Cat premieres on PBS KIDS with
a special one-hour broadcast of two

The National Parks: America's Best Idea
All programs are on both 34.1 and 34.2
unless noted.
THE NATIONAL PARKS:
AMERICA’S BEST IDEA
Monday-Saturday,
September 2-7, 9pm
“The Scripture of Nature”
(1851-1890)
In 1864, Scottish-born wanderer John Muir
persuades Congress to pass an act that protects
Yosemite from commercial development for
“public use, resort and recreation” — the first
time in world history that any government
has put forth this idea. In 1872, Congress
passes an act to protect a “wonderland” in the
northwest corner of the Wyoming territory
and it becomes America’s first national park:
Yellowstone.
“The Empire of Grandeur”
(1915-1919)
In the early 20th century, America has a
dozen national parks, but they are a haphazard
patchwork of special places under the
supervision of different federal agencies. The
conservation movement pushes the government
to establish one unified agency to oversee all
the parks, leading to the establishment of the
National Park Service in 1916 under its first
director, Stephen Mather.

“Determining Guilt”
MASTERPIECE MYSTERY!
FOYLE’S WAR, SERIES VII
Sundays, 9pm
“The Eternity Ring” –
September 15
On trial is Jimmy Moran, who at 18 took part in
a store robbery during which the storeowner’s
wife was shot and grievously injured. Presiding
is distinguished U.S. District Judge Jed S.
Rakoff, who has a longstanding interest in
neuroscience and its effect on criminal law.
Alan Alda explores how brain-scanning
technology is providing insights into these
questions and discusses the implications of
neuroscience entering the courtroom.
With one war ended, a new one is looming
as the iron curtain falls across Europe.
Suspecting that British atomic research has
been infiltrated, MI5 asks Foyle to investigate
the possibility of a Russian spy network in the
heart of London. During his inquiry, Foyle
learns that his former driver, Sam, has been
working for one of the possible suspects.
“Deciding Punishment”
Jimmy Moran is found guilty of badly injuring
a woman during a robbery. In the sentencing
phase of the trial, Judge Rakoff hears arguments
from the court-appointed psychiatrist, the
attorneys, the victim’s husband and Jimmy
himself. Meanwhile, Alan Alda discovers
how neuroscience is already influencing the
sentencing of defendants and meets a judge
who has volunteered to have his own brain
probed as he makes sentencing decisions.
“Sunflower” – September 29
Foyle is tasked with protecting Karl Strasser,
a Nazi officer turned MI5 informant who
believes he’s in danger. America wants Strasser
extradited for his involvement in a wartime
event, but British Intelligence is determined to
protect him. As Foyle nears a solution to the
case, the unfathomable truth of “Operation
Sunflower” is revealed.
Underwritten by Holy Cross Village at Notre Dame and
South Bend Symphony
“The Cage” – September 22
A severely injured man drags himself to a
hospital, only to die shortly after being found by
a nurse and doctor. As Foyle makes inquiries, he
discovers a mysterious military facility full of
secrets that could threaten British Intelligence.
Meanwhile, Sam’s jumbled efforts to help her
husband, Adam, campaign for Parliament
draw surprising results.

From 1565 to 1880, the first Spanish explorers
enter North America, the U.S. expands into
territories in the Southwest that had been
home to Native Americans and English and
Spanish colonies, and the Mexican-American
War strips Mexico of half its territories by
1848. The American population is reshaped
by Latino immigration starting in 1880 and
continuing into the 1940s: Cubans, Mexicans
and Puerto Ricans start to build communities
in South Florida, Los Angeles and New York.
King Richard (Ben Whishaw) is called upon
to settle a dispute between his cousin Henry
Bolingbroke (Rory Kinnear) and Thomas
Mowbray (James Purefoy). Both men are

Bolingbroke’s money and lands, Richard
leaves for wars against the rebels in Ireland.
Bolingbroke returns to claim his inheritance
and then takes Richard prisoner and lays claim
to the throne.
“War and Peace/
The New Latinos”
During the World War II years and those
that follow, Latino Americans serve their new
country by the hundreds of thousands — yet
still face discrimination and a fight for civil
rights in the United States. In the decades

During the Depression, the popularity of dozens of superhero characters opens the door for
a new generation of artists and writers. World
War II creates a patriotic fervor, but in the
1950s, superheroes are caught in the fire of government scrutiny and regulation. When the
thrilling “Adventures of Superman” is broadcast on the new medium of television, America’s
first and greatest superhero leads the entire
comic book industry to renewed strength.
The National Football League is the richest
and most powerful sports league in the world,
generating more than $10 billion in revenues
last year. Yet the sport is destroying the health
of, and even killing, many of its players. And
what’s more, for years the NFL denied scientific
evidence that violence on the field causes catastrophic brain damage, injuries that caused the
maiming and killing of players, including some
of the all-time greats.

Ernestine
Raclin:
Leading
the Way
In this brand-new documentary,
WNIT’s cameras focus on her
story of resourcefulness, courage,
undaunted optimism and belief in
herself and her community as only
Ernie could deliver. Her abilities as
a business savvy executive helped 1st
Source Bank become one of the most successful, privately-owned
financial institutions in the country. She paved the way for women
in business, just as her volunteer activities led the way in economic
development, arts, education and human services.
Composed in collaboration with Third Coast Percussion,
“Resounding Earth” gave Thomas the opportunity to work with
the four young musicians whom she met while they were studying
at Northwestern University – Owen Clayton Condon, Robert
Dillon, Peter Martin and David Skidmore.
“Resounding Earth” will be broadcast on WNIT 34.1 on Sunday,
October 13 at 3pm and Saturday, October 26 at 4pm. Also, on
34.2 on Thursday, September 19 at 10pm.
The half-hour program airs on Thursday, September 26 at 9pm and
Sunday, September 29 at 4:30pm and Monday, September 30 at
7:30pm on 34.1.
Resounding Earth
The University of Notre Dame’s DeBartolo Performing
Arts Center and WNIT will present the world premiere of
“Resounding Earth” by renowned composer Augusta Read Thomas
this fall on WNIT. “Resounding Earth” is a 28-minute work for
a percussion quartet featuring more than 125 bells from a wide
variety of cultures and historical periods. Thomas composed the
piece and the Chicago based Third Coast Percussion ensemble
performed it live on September 30, 2012, at DeBartolo’s
Leighton Hall.
For the one-hour documentary, WNIT interviewed Augusta Reed
Thomas along with the Third Coast Percussion ensemble to explore
the musicality and insight into the making of each movement.
In addition, WNIT interviewed Dr. Douglas Hall, Notre Dame
associate professor in the college of engineering, to discuss the
science of metallurgy that constitutes the various sounds made
by bells. Anna Thompson, executive director of the DeBartolo
Performing Arts Center, provided the University’s perspectives on
the importance of encouraging and celebrating the human spirit
through the performing and cinematic arts.
South Bend
Medical Foundation:
100 Years of Excellence
For over 100 years, the South Bend Medical Foundation has
been providing laboratory services to the South Bend medical
community and beyond. This documentary will detail the
innovations, quality of care improvements and breakthroughs
made right here in our community that have shaped the history of
the South Bend Medical Foundation and the impact it has had on
improved medical care around the world.
SOUTH BEND MEDICAL FOUNDATION: 100 YEARS OF
EXCELLENCE premieres on Wednesday, September 18 at 9pm
and repeats on Sunday, September 22 at 2pm on 34.1.

WNIT Kids Club Day in the Park
The 2nd Annual WNIT Kids Club Day in the Park was held on
June 20 at St. Patrick’s County Park and was a resounding success.
Over 400 children and parents enjoyed kid-friendly games and activities, a story corner, portable disc golf, a nature station hosted by
Evie Kirkwood, face painting, and a visit from special guest The Cat
in the Hat! Every child attending the event went home with an ageappropriate book.
Thank you to the sponsors who helped make this event possible!

Spotlight
Mike Wargo
This month WNIT shines the supporter spotlight on WNIT Board member Mike Wargo. Mike is serving
his second term on the WNIT Board and has been a member of the Governance Committee and the
Talent Show Task Force where he suggested the idea for “Michiana’s Rising Star,” the exciting and
ground-breaking area talent show which took place in the WNIT Ganey Studio at the end of July and
early August. “Michiana’s Rising Star” was two years in the making, and Mike says he personally enjoys
events which make a mark. He also served on the Budget, Audit and Finance Committee.
In addition to his Board of Directors service, Mike is a member of the WNIT Directors’ Circle and
serves as the COO of Hospice Foundation. WNIT salutes his service, creativity and great support.
Mike Wargo
Directors’
Circle
The WNIT Directors’ Circle represents a very dedicated and select group of individuals who, by their commitment,
contribute to the total annual support which is the foundation of WNIT’s operating budget. These essential annual
contributions make possible the great programs that everyone in Michiana enjoys.
