Registration Policy
Inclement Weather
Tuition must be paid at the time of registration. When registering by
Internet or phone, please have your Mastercard, Visa, American
Express, or Discover number. If you prefer to pay by cash or check,
you may register by mail or in person. We maintain waiting lists for all
classes, and instructors prepare materials for a limited number of
participants. Please do not come to class without first registering.
Know your schedule in advance. Once you have registered for a
class, the tuition is non-transferable and cannot be applied to other
classes. If you wish to cancel out of one class and register for
another, you will be charged a $5 cancellation fee.
Should inclement weather force the cancellation of classes,
Community Education participants will be contacted by phone, if
possible. Community Education daytime classes will be cancelled if
EKU is closed or on a 2-hour delay. If EKU evening classes are
cancelled, Community Education evening classes will be cancelled.
For a recorded message, call 622-1228. All EKU class/event
cancellation and delay announcements are posted on EKU’s home
page, www.eku.edu, broadcast on WEKU-FM (88.9FM) and
Lexington television stations WLEX-TV (Channel 18), WKYT-TV
(Challenge 27) and WTVQ-TV (Channel 36). Generally, the
information is available to listeners/viewers by 6 am. Call 622-2239
for up-to-date announcements.
Confirmation
Participants will receive a class reminder courtesy call or email
approximately 3 to 5 days prior to class for each paid registration. If
you do not receive a courtesy call or email prior to class, please
contact our office, as Community Education may not have your most
up to date telephone number or email address. If a class is full or
cancelled, or if there is any change in class time or location, you will
also be notified by phone or email.
Refunds
Full tuition refunds will be issued if a class is cancelled. If you choose
to cancel your registration and notify the Office of Community
Education no later than 2 working days prior to the first class, you will
be issued a refund minus a $5 cancellation processing fee. The day
of the class is not to be included in the “two working days
prior” (examples: a Saturday class may be cancelled on Thursday, but
not Friday; a Friday class may be cancelled on Wednesday, but not
Thursday; a Monday class may be cancelled on Thursday, but not
Friday.
Class Cancellations
Each class has a minimum enrollment that must be met in order for
the course to be held. Classes with low enrollment will be cancelled
shortly before the starting date and refunds will be issued.
Parking
Community Education participants attending courses in the Perkins
Building may park in the “general” lot adjacent to the Perkins Building.
Participants attending classes held in other campus buildings will
receive a parking permit valid only in Alumni Coliseum Commuter Lot
from 6:00am—4:30pm and in any Commuter Lot after 4:30pm. On
Saturdays, all employee and commuter campus parking lots are open
to Community Education participants. Alumni Coliseum is not
available on football game days.
Changes
For reasons beyond our control, it is sometimes necessary to change
instructors, course content, location, time and date.
Your
understanding in these circumstances will be appreciated.
Material/Supply Fees
Additional fees and/or materials are required for some courses.
Check the course description for the cost of such fees, which are paid
directly to the instructor.
O’Donnell Scholarships
In accordance with KRS 164.284, persons age 65 or older are eligible
to enroll in Community Education classes at no cost, contingent upon
slot availability. Proof of age is required at time of registration.
O’Donnell Scholarships only apply to tuition and do not include
textbooks, equipment, supplies, trips or tours. Please ask about
additional cost when registering for the class. Participant assumes
the responsibility of the full tuition cost of the course if they fail
to cancel two (2) working days prior to the first class and/or do
not attend the course.
Healthy You! at EKU Wellness Benefit
Community Education has partnered with Healthy You! at EKU to
offer free wellness courses for benefited EKU employees. Employees
may take one Healthy Living course and one Recreation & Exercise
course or a series of Recreation & Exercise courses (i.e. Yoga #1, #2,
and #3) per semester and must attend 75% of the classes to qualify
for this benefit for future sessions. Employees must register no later
than the first day of class in order to take advantage of the Healthy
You! at EKU Wellness Benefit.

This basket has a round spoke bottom
with a wooden handle. You will love
learning to weave a round bottom! The

Braid Weave Basket (Intermediate)
This is an adorable basket that is a great way to learn the beautiful “braid

Beginning Drawing for Kids

Is your child interested in drawing but doesn’t know where to begin? In this
class, participants will learn basic drawing techniques as they complete a
fall themed drawing. No prior experience is necessary. Supplies in the
amount of $5 is payable to the instructor at the beginning of class.

Watercolor Painting

Beginner, intermediate and advanced participants are welcome.
Instruction will be individualized. Members of the class are asked to come
to the first class meeting with one specific watercolor skill they wish to
improve. For example: Beginners may need to develop color mixing,
shape description, brush handling, etc. Participants who are unsure of a
specific watercolor skill in need of development should bring previous
paintings for analysis. The goal of this class is to perfect the skills that
underlie personal expressivity and creativity in the use of watercolor.

Navigating Your Smartphone

Do you have a small business that lacks a Facebook page? Do you
volunteer with an organization who could benefit from sharing their goal or
mission on Facebook? Are you hosting an event or activity that could
engage and update individuals through a presence on Facebook? This
hands-on class will enable you to create a page on Facebook and teach
you the basics of page management and tips for posting information to
your page. Please have your personal Facebook account created and
know your username and password before entering class.

household budgets, or business expenses, or create a mass mailing list for
events, holidays, or other occasions, or organize data into a spreadsheet
where you can calculate results from your data, then you can do so with
Microsoft Excel, the world’s most popular spreadsheet program. This class
will have you creating basic spreadsheets in no time, and will also teach
you how to advance your skills in Excel, on your own time, once you leave
the classroom.

Think you have a grasp on the basics in building Microsoft Excel
spreadsheets? Are you ready to move past data entry, inserting rows and
columns, or only using basic math functions like autosum? This class will
lead you into the next level of Excel where you will learn how to create 3-D
formulas and functions, manipulate and organize data by creating
PivotTables and PivotCharts, name cells and ranges of cells, and apply
advanced formatting.

Sure the name sounds unusual, but this online tool is a popular and
professional way to survey a group of individuals, whether the group is
large or small. Take this hands-on class to learn how to create and set-up
a Survey Monkey account, build and create basic surveys, share them with
the audience you wish to survey, and then evaluate and read the results of
the surveys you create.

Unlocking the Benefits of Oils & Aromas

This class will teach students how to use essential oils to bring about better
health and well-being. This class will teach students how essential oils can
be used to not only nourish the body, but also one’s mind through
techniques based on ancient eastern wisdom traditions. Students will learn
the importance of the senses and how one can use the specific senses of
touch & smell to gain medicinal benefits through essential oils. There will
also be instruction given on what oils are good for each individual
consitution, giving students an understanding of which oils to choose for
their personal health and balance.

If you want to develop a healthier relationship with food so that eating takes
a balanced place in your life, mindful eating is for you! In this experiential
mindful eating group, you will have the opportunity to explore your
relationship to eating and food. Your increased awareness and
mindfulness will help foster balance, choice, wisdom, acceptance, and
ultimately transform your relationship with food and the quality of your life.
Topics covered include: introduction to mindfulness meditation, applying
mindfulness to eating, the seven kinds of hunger, and exploring habits and
patterns with food. This course consists of eight 90-minutes sessions. No
meditation experience needed. Participants will be required to
purchase Mindful Eating: A Guide to Rediscovering a Healthy and
Joyful Relationship with Food (CD included) by Jan Chozen Bays.

This class begins with techniques that everyone can use to make great
images and covers basic camera operations such as automatic and priority
camera pre-sets, camera icons, ISO, aperture and shutter speed. This
course will discuss composition and how to shoot with a creative eye. We
will also touch on how to take full-control of your camera-shooting in
manual mode, as well as options on printing and storing your images on
computers. Please bring your digital camera for a directed hands-on

Each class will include lecture and activities, including group meditation
instruction. Students will learn their own personal mind-body constitution
based on ancient Eastern principles and will be guided in how to keep the
balance of happiness & health through the stress of everyday life. We will
explore various forms of meditation and breathing techniques. As each
student discovers their personal balance, we will guide you in selecting
which practices work best for you and your lifestyle. This course will also
cover subjects related to building greater choice awareness and
mindfulness. This will help students uncover the challenges they may face
in life and how they have created these obstacles through choices and
thoughts in their past. The instructor will teach students how to make better
choices toward manifesting a better future with centeredness and balance.

Institute of Reading Development
We are very excited to partner with the Institute of Reading Development
to offer these popular reading skills programs. These classes are
designed and taught by instructors from the Institute of Reading
Development and are not eligible for the O’Donnell Scholarship and
registration policies may vary from those stated on page 3.
Program for 4-Year-Olds and Entering Kindergartners:
Students in this program learn beginning reading skills and develop a love of
books. Your child will learn letter recognition, phonics, and sight words, and will
learn to read simple words and sentences.
Program for Entering 1st Graders:
In this program, students learn to read independently. Your child will learn phonics
and sight words, improve comprehension, and gain the skills and confidence
needed for success in first grade.
Program for Entering 2nd Graders: In this program, students become fluent
independent readers. Your child will make significant gains in phonics and wordattack skills, fluency, and comprehension, and will develop confidence and a love
of reading.
Body Recall Lite

An exercise program designed to improve quality of life through
movement. The program focuses on muscle strength, flexibility, range of
motion, breathing and circulation. Body Recall is safe and beneficial for
everyone. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Richmond Senior
Citizens Center will provide the necessary materials through the instructor
on the first day of class. Participants may purchase a $20 textbook, which
is optional.

Students in this program become strong independent readers. Your child will
develop the comprehension, fluency, and long-word decoding skills needed to read
longer books with ease, and will build confidence and a love of reading.
Program for Entering 4th and 5th Graders:
In this program, students make substantial gains in comprehension, long-word
decoding skills, fluency, and reading speed. Your child will complete homework
more quickly and easily, be more successful in school, and become a strong,
enthusiastic reader.
Program for Entering 6th-8th Graders:
Students in this program make substantial gains in comprehension while doubling
reading speed. They also learn the best way to read textbooks, take notes, and
study for tests. As a result, students complete homework more quickly and easily,
get better grades, and enjoy reading more.
Program for Entering 9th-11th Graders:
Students double reading speed, make substantial gains in comprehension, and
learn study skills. Excellent preparation for the SAT, ACT, and college.
Program for Adults, College Students, and Entering 12th Graders:
Students double reading speed in most difficult reading, and triple speed in easier
materials. Students learn the most effective approach to reading comprehension,
as well as concentration, recall, and note-taking techniques that will greatly reduce
re-reading.

lifetime fitness exercise
program; designed for
men and women of ALL
ages, to improve quality

life
through
movements. Participants
will
chose
the
movements that are safe
and possible for their
condition; from physical
challenges due to injury,
surgery, chronic
conditions to the athlete.
Research has shown participants have reported improved bone and
muscle strength, flexibility, balance, circulation, breathing and energy.
Correct body mechanics are taught for sitting, walking, use of stairs, etc.
Exercises are designed for fall prevention and various ways to get up from
a fall are taught, according to Body Recall: A program of Physical Fitness
for the Adult, author Dorothy Chrisman. Wear comfortable clothing and
shoes and please refrain from perfumes for maximum health benefits
for everyone. Please note that class will be cancelled if Madison
County Schools are out due to inclement weather.

Physically, yoga increases our flexibility, strength, endurance and vitality.
It promotes calmness in our rapid-paced lives and allows deep relaxation
and stress reduction. This class, appropriate for most levels of physical
ability, will teach the basics as well as demonstrate the variety of yoga

Exercise for Adults with Chronic Conditions

This exercise program is designed for adults with chronic conditions. Any
type of chronic condition is welcomed in the class. Some examples are:
arthritis, cancer, low back pain, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s, spinal cord
injury, total joint replacements, fibromyalgia or osteoporosis. Exercise
programs are based on the goals and needs of each participant. These
may be designed to improve muscular strength, cardiovascular endurance,
balance and flexibility.

Aqua Fit
Water gives us a weightless feeling making water aerobics enjoyable for
many. Aqua Fit offers a variety of exercises with modifications so
individuals can participate at their own fitness level. The Weaver pool is
known for its warm environment, so those who want and need a low
impact, low stress, yet challenging workout...this one is for you!

Provides experiences and activities for children to:
 Learn to ask for permission before entering the water
 Learn how to enter and exit the water in a safe manner
 Feel comfortable in the water
 Explore submerging to the mouth, nose and eyes completely
 Explore buoyancy on the front and back position
 Change body position in the water
 Learn how to play safely
 Experience wearing a U.S. Coast Guard approved life jacket
If your child is not completely potty trained, he/she must wear an
APPROVED SWIM DIAPER.

 Perform combined stroke on front and back with assistance
 Change body position in the water
 Experience wearing a U.S. Coast Guard approved life jacket

Orients children to the aquatic environment and helps them gain basic
aquatic skills. Also helps children gain greater independence in their skills
and develop more comfort in and around water. Skills, used with support,
will include:

 Enter water by stepping in
 Blow bubbles through mouth and nose
 Submerge mouth, nose and eyes
 Bobbing
 Open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects
 Front and back glides and recover to a vertical position

For children ages 8 and up, ready to improve technique and increase
stamina. Must be comfortable in deep water and able to swim the width of
the pool.

This class is for anyone that is 12 years old and older, including adults.
Learn to be yourself in the water while developing personal safety,
swimming skill, and plan for fitness. Breath control, floating, kicking, front
crawl, breaststroke, and several other techniques for recreational
swimming will be developed.
