Income Tax Assistance
from AARP for seniors

T
he New Year brings many changes to the Anne Arundel County Public Library system. Most exciting
are the expanded hours at 12 of the libraries (see the back cover for a complete schedule). But these
hours are just the beginning of a renaissance of library service in this county.
Along with our fresh approach to early literacy and STEM education, we are moving forward with the
replacement of the Annapolis Area Library with the funding so graciously provided by County Executive
Laura Neuman and the members of the County Council. We look forward to the day that this library
becomes a gathering place for residents throughout the southern region to pursue knowledge, entertainment
and community engagement.
In fact, we want this idea of a community gathering space to apply to all of our libraries. To reinforce this
goal, we are adding the words “community library” to 12 of our branch names and will be making changes, both dramatic and subtle, to
add to the appeal of these libraries. Sometime in the future, we will begin to refer to the Annapolis, North County and West County
Area Libraries as the Annapolis, Odenton and Glen Burnie Regional Libraries, to reflect their status as larger, better-appointed facilities
designed to serve a population beyond their immediate neighbors.
In the meantime, we are also renaming the South County and Provinces Branches. Come January 26, they will be known as the Deale and
Severn Community Libraries respectively, to recognize the communities these libraries serve.
As President of the Library’s Board of Trustees, I am excited by the direction in which our library system is headed. We are proud of our
ability to serve each and every resident of Anne Arundel County and invite all of you to follow along as we grow and to take advantage of
all that the library has to offer.
Volunteers trained by the Internal Revenue
Service and the Maryland Comptroller’s
Office will help taxpayers over age 60 and
those in low-income tax brackets prepare
their federal and state tax returns. AARP
membership is not required. Unless noted
otherwise, this drop-in service requires no
registration and is available on a first-come,
first-served basis. Self-service electronic
filing is available using the library computers.

aster Storyteller Baba Jamal Koram, recipient
of National Storytelling Network’s Circle of
Excellence Oracle Award, returns to Anne
Arundel County Public Library this February to bring
history alive as he shares stories full of wit and
wisdom. His performances include drumming and
call and response and are rich in the history, humor,
music and lore of the African and African-American
cultures. His unique blend of old and new storytelling
techniques is sure to both enchant and educate
audiences of all ages.
