Conquering Crohn’s and Colitis
Dear conQuest Supporter,
IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease)
The numbers are staggering: 1.4 million Americans are diagnosed with Crohn’s disease and
ulcerative colitis. In Michigan alone, there is an increasing prevalence of individuals with IBD,
most living in the metropolitan Detroit area. IBD is characterized by chronic, intermittent
inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. The incidence is increasing globally at a dramatic
rate, and although the precise cause remains unknown, it likely involves genetic predisposition,
environmental influences and a dysregulated immune response.
conQuest was established in 2013, with the goal of “conquering” Crohn’s and colitis by enhancing
the Center of Excellence for Digestive Diseases at Beaumont Health System. Our goal is to support
an advanced state-of-the-art facility for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with IBD. Patients
of all ages, from childhood through adulthood, will have access to new and innovative imaging
techniques, medical care, and holistic therapies via a wide range of enhanced clinical services
and support systems to meet the needs of all patients and families.
Like you, our lives have been touched by IBD. We have family members who were diagnosed
with Crohn’s disease and we are intimately familiar with the medical, social, and psychological
challenges of living with IBD. We also recognize the importance of allowing patients with
IBD to remain functional and independent without physical or psychological limitations.
Your support of Beaumont through important sponsorships directly impacts patients in our
community and assists the hospital in providing leading-edge technology that changes outcomes.
Our 2013 conQuest event proceeds supported a clinical psychologist for children with IBD
at Beaumont. An IBD support group was initiated and an IBD blog was started to increase
awareness through social networking and distribution of timely information. Additionally,
IBD awareness was highlighted by Children’s Miracle Network locally reaching out to
Southeast Michigan and Wayne County.
Our 2015 event proceeds will assist in enhancing IBD patient research and staffing at
Beaumont’s BioBank and providing patient support within Beaumont’s Digestive Health
Center of Excellence. Several internet communication options are being examined between
physician and patients reviewing telemedicine guidelines and privacy rules when consulting
IBD patients and college students. We are also excited about the launch of our new
website: www.conquestcrohns.com.
We hope you will join us in welcoming Jay Leno to Freedom Hill on July 25th as we
continue to work toward conquering Crohn’s and colitis!
Warmest Regards,
Maureen & Rob Safian

Jay Leno
Acclaimed late night TV show host, admired stand-up
comedian, best-selling children’s book author,
much-in-demand corporate speaker, lovable TV
and movie voiceover artist, pioneering car builder
and mechanic, and philanthropist … it’s no wonder
that Jay Leno is widely characterized as “the hardest
working man in show business.”
Jay Leno’s late night television ratings domination
included more than two decades of “The Tonight
Show with Jay Leno,” winning every consecutive
quarter of his hosting over the past 19 years. He
has been honored by the Television Academy with
an Emmy for “Outstanding Comedy, Variety or Music
Series.” “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” has also
taken home the trophy for “Favorite Late Night Show”
in the annual TV Guide Awards determined by
voting viewers, and he was recently inducted into
the Television Academy’s Broadcast Hall of Fame.
his papers archived in the Library of Congress. He
also received a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame.
Leno has also succeeded in the newest entertainment
arena, “Jay Leno’s Garage” which he produces
and stars in. The NBC creation, which is viewed at
Jaylenosgarage.com, has gained an international
following on the Web, not to mention an Emmy Award
and two additional nominations for Outstanding
Special Class — Short-Format Nonfiction Programs.
Leno, himself, is the recipient of the People’s Choice
Award and other honors, including the Harris Poll
selection as most popular star on television. Other
personal highlights include his upcoming acceptance
of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing
Arts’ Mark Twain Prize for American Humor; the
Hasty Pudding Award from Harvard University (an
honor whose sole prior comedy / talk host recipient
was Johnny Carson); and an honorary doctorate
from his alma mater, Emerson College. Like

An indefatigable performer, Leno loves to test his
humor on audiences across the nation, performing
over 100 live appearances in nightclubs, theaters
and stadiums each year. His “everyman”-style and
personality have helped him earn millions of fans
worldwide, especially in the regions where people
relate to his personable style and work ethic. He
remains passionate about performing in front of live
audiences and appears regularly in Las Vegas, on
college campuses around the United States and
in other venues.
Having passed the torch of Tonight Show succession
to Jimmy Fallon, Jay Leno has increased his customary
busy schedule of comedy performances in top venues
around the United States and occasionally abroad.
He interrupted these pursuits to make his first trip
to Israel for the honor of presenting the Genesis
Award, Israel’s equivalent of the Nobel Award, to
Michael Bloomberg.
Leno was born in New Rochelle, New York, and raised
in Andover, Massachusetts. He and his wife, Mavis,
live in Los Angeles.
