Advice from a handyman…
Wife texts husband on a cold
winter’s morning:
“Windows frozen, won’t open.”
Husband texts back:
“Gently pour some lukewarm water over it and
gently tap edges with hammer.”
Wife texts back 5 minutes later:
“Computer really messed up now.”
Helpful Hints
Keep brown sugar soft by storing with a couple of
marshmallows.
Remove pet hair from furniture and
carpets with a squeegee.
Add half a teaspoon of baking soda to the water
when hard-boiling eggs to make the shells
incredibly easy to peel.
To prevent potatoes budding,
add an apple in the bag.
Use a large muffin tin to cook stuffed peppers in the
oven - it will help keep them upright.
Some time ago, a loving grandson
was talking to his grandmother
about modern life. He asked for her
opinion on everything that has been
going on in the last years. His
grandmother gave him a long look
and said: "Well, let me see…
I was born before:
Penicillin, television, frozen
foods, Xerox, the pill, credit
cards, laser beams, ball-point pens,
pantyhose, dishwashers, or clothes
dryers.
I never heard of FM radios, tape
decks, CDs, electric typewriters,
yogurt, or guys wearing earrings.
If you saw anything with made in
Japan on it, it was junk.
Ice-cream cones, phone calls, rides
on a streetcar, and a Pepsi were all
a nickel.
In my day:
Grass was mowed.
Coke was a cold drink.
Aids were teacher’s helpers.
Software wasn’t even a word.
How old do you think I am?

Snapshot
I believe Courtyard
Village is special in the
way that it has so many
strong, fabulous women.
Mary Albrecht, a bright
and shiny example,
goes for her daily walk, rain or shine. She may
seem like an Oregonian, but she was born in
Iowa in a big, white farmhouse during WWI. Her
sister, herself, and their cousins traveled the
country roads on their bicycles and swam in the
local creeks in the summertime.
Upon graduating high school, she thought she
only had three choices: become a teacher, a
nurse or get married and be a housewife. When
she took a psychology course she knew it was
the profession for which she had passion. She
met her first husband during college. They
married and had two sons, Jim and Jack. Her
father told her that her boys names sounded like
two Missouri mules. As she laid in her hospital
bed with newborn Jack, December 7th, 1941, the
radio blared the news of Pearl Harbor. Tears
streamed down her face; she knew their lives
would never be the same. Two months later her
husband Kendall left for the service. He did not
make it back.
Health Matters: Put a Spring in Your Step &
Feel Younger
Is your glass half-empty or half-full? How you
answer this age-old question about positive
thinking may determine how you feel and even
how young you look. Some studies show that
personality traits like optimism and pessimism can
affect many areas of your health and well-being.
According a recent Mayo Clinic study on the
effects of positive thinking and aging, health benefits that positive thinking may provide include:

Increased life span

Lower rates of depression

Lower levels of distress

Greater resistance to the common cold

Better psychological and physical well-being

Reduced risk of death from cardiovascular
disease

Better coping skills during hardships and
times of stress
(Mayo Clinic Study Results—March 2014 )
Feeling good about yourself and finding
something to be grateful for every day adds a
spring in your step and a smile on your face. In

Two years later Mary met a returning soldier,
Ernst Albrecht. They married and made a few
moves. During this time Mary had earned a
Masters in Social work and Psychology. Her
second masters was earned at the same time as
her boys were at the university. The family made
another move, this time to Minneapolis where she
worked with the University psychologists and
medical staff to develop the neuropsychology
clinic for the complete evaluation and treatment of
children with neurological problems, primarily
learning disabilities.
