The full-time staffs of each camp are ready to start this summer expecting a packed house each week. The kids will experience fun activities, adventure, bonding with others and learning steps to help build their faith. It is a wonderful environment that most children will remember for years. A few items of note regarding Cross Trails Ministry this year: 1. The last remaining note was paid off and the camps are debt free. We continue to not to build new facilities until funds have been raised. 2. This last year saw the largest number of summer campers ever! Off season retreats are also on the rise. 3. The annual Gala was held last month raising funds to assist those campers who cannot afford the full registration. Last year $18,000 was raised. This year should be close. 4. The new Ebert Ranch Chapel is under construction and should be complete by September. The entire cost was funded by two visionary churches and a few donors. 5. The new ambitious Master Plan for both camps was released last year and it takes Cross Trails Ministry in to the future in a big way. It will require significant fund raising to begin each phase but the results will be stunning! Stay tuned for info. 6. One sad note-The Ebert Ranch Director—Hannah Schawe will be leaving at the end of summer camp. She has distinguished herself over the last three years and will be missed. We wish her success in her future endeavors. Have you been to either camp this year? If not, you are missing out on some memory building experiences. We have the staff and facilities to help you enjoy a great weekend for your family and friends. We are here to serve you! Let’s go camping! Michael A. Childers President Cross Trails Ministry Board of Directors 3 Report from the Executive Director 4 Cross Trails Ministry Served 4,961 People in 2014! Cross Trails Ministry is the summer camp, retreat and expedition ministry operated by the congregations of the Southwestern Texas Synod. Two year round ministry sites, Camp Chrysalis and Ebert Ranch Camp, serve as places of gathering and sending for the church. Cross Trails Ministry served a total of 4,961 people in 2014. This includes 2,314 people in summer camp and 2,647 people in retreats and expeditions. Of these 3,141 were youth and 1,820 were adults. Summer Camp 1,128 Chrysalis Summer Camp 306 Ebert Summer Camp 805 Day Camp 47 Beach Camp 16 Texas Trek 12 Urban Plunge (new) 2,314 Total Retreats/Expeditions 2,042 Chrysalis Retreats 551 Ebert Retreats 41 Off-Site 13 Expeditions 2,647 Total Overall Totals 3,170 Chrysalis 857 Ebert 921 Off-Site 13 Expeditions 4,961 Total Cross Trails had its biggest summer camp year ever in 2014! Summer Camp increased by 9.6% over 2013. There were increases in all categories except Beach Camp and an impressive increase of 15% at Chrysalis. The growth at Chrysalis was primarily in younger campers and the high school Lutheran Youth Leadership Experience (LYLE) program. In fact, we served over 100 LYLE campers for the first time. Our summer theme for 2015 is Who do you say I AM? Our worships, Bible studies and daily activities will focus on the “I AM” statements of Jesus, what they tell us about God and how they relate to our lives today. Programs are available for all ages, from finishing Kindergarten through Grandparent Camp! Remember that “camperships” are available, so don’t let anyone miss out on camp because of the cost! Retreats Ebert Ranch had its largest retreat year ever in 2014! However, Chrysalis retreating guest numbers were down significantly even though we had the exact same number of retreats in 2013 and 2014. We did have one large group cancel, but most of the difference is smaller retreats. So, for the first year in five, we did not break the 5,000 people mark overall. Cross Trails Ministry offers hosted rental retreats, Cross Trails programmed retreats and volunteer retreats to many different types of groups. Our Cross Trails Retreats continue to be very well-received and we have been especially pleased to see growth in our intergenerational and youth retreats. Expeditions Cross Trails Expeditions are short-term international mission/immersion trips that allow participants to grow in faith as they meet, and learn with, Christians in other countries. Cross Trails handles the logistics and trip preparation, helps with fundraising and then leads the 4 Report from the Executive Director 5 trips. In 2014, Cross Trails Expeditions went to Costa Rica and Honduras. This year we are planning an expedition to Costa Rica geared to adult women. We’re Debt Free!!! Cross Trails Ministry was able to pay off the remains of our mortgage in the beginning of 2015 thanks to gifts received in 2014. Thank you to all of the congregations and individuals who made this possible through their generous gifts. Facilities Improvements In 2014, Camp Chrysalis was pleased to add air conditioning to the Dining Hall, which was a great relief to the cooks and guests. We were also able to add a new summer water play feature to the creek that proved so popular that there were days we did not have any campers in the pool! Finally, we added a new outdoor chapel that is large enough to hold all of our summer campers. At Ebert Ranch Camp we began the construction of a new chapel in late Fall. This will provide the first year round indoor meeting space that will be able to hold everyone in camp! It is quite a gift, and we look forward to dedicating it this fall. Does your Church have a Trail Guide? Cross Trails Ministry is seeking at least one representative in each congregation to serve as a Trail Guide. These folks serve as communicators for their congregations on all of the happenings at Cross Trails Ministry and also give feedback on needs from their church. If you would like to submit a name for a Trail Guide, please email info@crosstrails.org. Connecting Cross Trails to You You can find out the latest happenings at Cross Trails by friending Cross Trails Ministry, Lutheran Camp Chrysalis and Ebert Ranch Camp on Facebook. You can also now follow us on Twitter and on Instagram at Cross_Trails. Funding the Ministry - The Annual Fund for Annual Needs Cross Trails Ministry finished the 2014 budget year in the black. Thank you to all of our donors! Fees from participants cover only about 70% of the cost of camp. The remaining money is raised through gifts from congregations, individuals, the Lutheran Foundation of the Southwest, Thrivent, organizations and the synod. We provide camperships to youth and adults who cannot afford the fee, so no one should miss out on camp because of cost. We have two special events that help considerably in our funding. The Gift of Faith Gala funds our camperships. Last year we gave out 137 camperships thanks to this event. The Fall Festival funds beyond the budget facilities improvements. Please give, and encourage your congregation to give, annually to this ministry so that we can continue to provide affordable faith experiences to the thousands of youth, adults and families who attend each year. You are making it possible for thousands to grow in faith! 5 Thank you for supporting Cross Trails Ministry!
