membership chairman or give us their name and address for a follow up mailing to invite them to join. Remember, we have also started the
“Friends of Abruzzo” program where non-Abruzzesi can join and enjoy some of the benefits of membership. If you have any questions or need
further information, please call Susan DuBois-Reetz at 586-293-6507. See page 9 for renewal form.
STEWARDHIP:
Federation activities are fun, entertaining, and cultural. We look forward to enjoying the fellowship and, what else, the food everyone prepares for
our fabulous potlucks and get togethers. We enjoy the videos, the music and the stories and histories of our family trees and ancestral homes in Italy.
The events seem to flow together effortlessly. This is true because of the members who have joined in and become part of a committee to put an
event together. Joining a committee is fun and rewarding. When you have the power of many the tasks are minor and the job is done with ease.
When you renew your Membership for 2015 be sure to indicate which committee you are interested in and your phone number. The Chairman of
the committee will call you for meetings. Remember, we can do more, we can do much, and we can do much more. All we need is everyone to do
his or her part.
TUITION REIMBURSEMENT FOR ITALIAN CLASSES:
The FADM is again proud to sponsor our “tuition Reimbursement Program” for members’ children under 18 years of age who successfully complete the requirements of the classes. The family must be in good standing for a one year period before they qualify for the program.

EVENTS AND HAPPENINGS
SECINARESE POLENTA PARTY
On Saturday, February 21, 2015, members of the Secinarese Club held their Annual Polenta Party at the First
English Evangelical Lutheran Church in Grosse Pointe Woods. An enjoyable evening of fellowship and fraternity was
had by all as families gathered around the polenta boards—replicating the age-old tradition of eating this humble staple
food, not on individual plates, but shared on wooden boards. The men manned the kitchen, headed by Frank Sellors,
assisted by the Simone, Fazi and Pranzarone families, all taking turns stirring the very large pots of simmering polenta.
Then they rolled out the pots and poured the polenta onto the wooden boards and with a large dowel flattened it, topping it with tomato meat sauce or vegetables. The meal was completed with samplings of members’ home-made wines
and home-made cookies and sweets. SALUTE!

“A Regional organization of Italian-American Abruzzese working toward the preservation and promotion of the Abruzzo Culture”
Revised for 2015
Dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the Abruzzo Culture
-ABRUZZO HERITAGE~ Mario Batali ~
Mario Francesco Batali (born September 19, 1960) is an American chef, writer, restaurateur
and media personality. In addition to his classical culinary training, he is an expert on the history and culture of Italian cuisine, including regional and local variations. Batali co-owns restaurants in New York City, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Singapore, Hong Kong[3] and Westport,
Connecticut. Batali's signature clothing style includes a fleece vest, shorts and orange Crocs.
He is also known as "Molto Mario".
Mario was raised in Seattle, Washington by Marilyn Batali and Armando Batali, who worked
for Boeing most of Mario’s childhood. Mario’s grandparents were from Chieti. He spent his
high school years studying in Madrid, Spain before attending Rutgers University for Spanish
Theater and Business Management. During his college years he worked for a pizzeria called
Stuff Yer Face. After graduating, he attended Le Cordon Bleu in London for a few short months before taking an apprenticeship with revered Chef Marco Pierre White in Borgo Capanne, a small northern Italian village. Over the next
three years he underwent a culinary transformation that prepared him to leap into New York’s Italian cuisine with his
own unique signature.
At 27, Mario was the head chef at Four Seasons Hotel Baltimore after working as a sous chef for Four Seasons Hotel,
San Francisco. In the early 1990s Mario began working at the Italian restaurant Rocco’s before opening Pó in New
York City in 1993 with incredible success. The New York buzz for his restaurants translated into the Food Network
show "Molto Mario" which aired from 1996 to 2004 where Mario’s career took off.
Mario teamed up with Joe Bastianich to form B&B Hospitality Group. Together they opened Babbo Ristorante e
Enoteca in New York City, which quickly gained the coveted three stars award from the New York Times, the first Italian
restaurant to do so in 40 years. Together they opened seven more restaurants in New York: Lupa, Esca, Casa Mono,
Bar Jamon, Otto, Del Posto, and Eataly (an Italian marketplace). In 2010, Del Posto received a four-star review from
the New York Times. It is one of only six restaurants in New York with the award. Their culinary empire has expanded to
10 restaurants in New York, four restaurants in Las Vegas, two restaurants in Los Angeles, two restaurants in Singapore,
one Italian market in Chicago, and two restaurants in Hong Kong.

operosità e iniziativa made in Italy.

NEWS FROM THE ABRUZZO REGION
======================================================================
ENEL, ''NORMALITA' ENTRO SABATO”; D'ALFONSO E MAZZOCCA,
''INACCETTABILE''
BLACK OUT ABRUZZO: ''250 MILA PERSONE SENZA LUCE DA
ALMENO 27 ORE'', ALLARME
PESCARA - "Circa 250 mila persone, residenti in 103 comuni dell'Abruzzo,
sono senza corrente elettrica da almeno 27 ore. Tanti sono in zone con
molta neve, senza riscaldamento.
