CHRIST THE REDEEMER CATHOLIC CHURCH HOUSTON, TEXAS Dear friends in Christ, Today is the 5th Sunday of Lent and, at the 9 a.m. Mass today with the RCIA community, we hear the popular gospel story of the resurrection of Lazarus (John 11). The other masses will hear from one chapter later in John’s gospel when Jesus predicts his coming death, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.” (John 12) Of course we hear these readings in light of the approaching Easter story of Jesus’ own resurrection from the dead. This is foreshadowing in the best possible way. Jesus has healed the sick, given sight to the blind, made the lame walk again and countless others have been brought “to life” because of his presence. Now Lazarus is literally brought back from the dead — and still there is unbelief. It’s important that we when we read these miracle stories in the Scriptures that we do not read them as mere passive onlookers. We are invited to place ourselves there at the scene and to be brought back from our own spiritual death (i.e., sin). When Jesus gives the command to those surrounding Lazarus, “Untie him and let him go,” we too should allow ourselves to be “untied” from the bonds of spiritual death so that we might live anew in Christ. One of the best ways to be “untied” from sin is through the grace that comes in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We will offer our annual Lenten Penance Service this Tuesday, March 24 at 6:30 p.m. We’ll have multiple priests here to hear confessions and I encourage you to take advantage of this wonderful time to be reconciled to Christ and the Church. I especially encourage anyone who has been away from the Sacrament of Reconciliation for a number of years to avail yourself of God’s mercy. Don’t worry if you “don’t know what to say or do.” The priests will be here to help you. We’ll walk you through everything. “Be not afraid,” as Jesus says repeatedly in the scriptures. Come home to Christ’s love and forgiveness! Please note our start time of 6:30 p.m. for confessions. That’s 30 minutes earlier than in the past, and this year we will not have a word service prior to confessions. The priests will be ready to start confessions at that time and you can go to any priest you wish. It’s our hope we can wrap up a little earlier than in the past. If you can’t make our service on Tuesday, our good friend and former vicar, Fr. Ryszard Kulma, will offer another reconciliation service at St. Edith Stein Church on Fry Road on Thursday, March 26 at 7 p.m. Today is also the third and final Scrutiny for our catechumens who will be baptized at the Easter Vigil on April 4. Please remember to keep them in your prayers, as well as our Candidates (those who have been baptized already and now seek full communion with the Church). Those candidates will be received into the Church on Sunday, April 12. We will be welcoming 59 new Catholics into the faith at CtR this Easter. Praise be to God! It’s not too early to begin looking ahead to next Sunday and the beginning of Holy Week. Of course it begins with Passion (Palm) Sunday next week. Palms will be distributed and blessed at all masses. Remember that the 9 a.m. Mass on Palm Sunday begins outside on the plaza as we call to mind Jesus’ procession and entry into Jerusalem. A nice tradition that has developed over the years at CtR is the wearing of the March 22, 2015 color red on Palm Sunday by members of the congregation. It’s the liturgical color of the day and a good reminder of the passion and suffering our Lord endured for us. We’ll cover more of the Holy Week schedule in next week’s bulletin, but to help you prepare, our liturgy schedule for Triduum will be as follows: Holy Thursday, April 2: 7 p.m.; Good Friday: April 3, 3 p.m.; Holy Saturday (Easter Vigil), April 4: 8:30 p.m.; and Easter Sunday, April 5: 7 a.m., 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Note that special time for the last Mass on Easter Sunday: 1 p.m. There is no 5 p.m. Mass on Easter Sunday. In addition we will offer Masses in the Parish Hall on Easter Sunday morning at 7 a.m., 9 a.m., and 11 a.m. For those who may be sensitive to the use of incense, please note that it will not be used at the three masses in the hall. We’ll have more details next week, but make plans on joining us for this great celebration of the Sacred Triduum. Today is one of our most eagerly awaited days on our church’s calendar as it is the kick-off to our rapidly approaching 30th annual CtR Spring Festival. Our chairpersons, Mike and Camille Havelka, will reveal the always popular Festival tshirt and have more information for us at all masses. The shirts will be available right after Mass in the Parish Hall for only $10 for adults and $8 for kids. It’s a great way to show your CtR pride and help support the Festival. It’s no secret that what makes the Spring Festival such an awesome event for our parish and community is the great number of people who volunteer their time and talent over the weekend. Your help is especially needed to staff a shift or two (usually in a block of two hours each) in one of our many booths, rides and games. The help and support of every one in the parish, both young and old, is most needed. It’s a great way to give back to the life of the community. On-line sign-ups are open now through our parish website: festival.ctrcc.com. You can access the page directly or through a link on the main page. It only takes a minute or two to sign up to help at one of the many areas in need. You can even do so after Mass when you are picking up a t-shirt as we’ll have computers ready for your use. Do it now and you will have the pick of the shift that best fits your schedule. It couldn’t be easier, and remember it’s a great family event so this is an opportune time to get the kids involved by serving others. Look for more Spring Festival news coming soon, and don’t forget the raffle ticket sale for a chance to win a new car. Most importantly mark your calendar now for April 25-26 and plan on joining us for a great weekend. We look forward to seeing you here! Finally, as CtR continues to grow we are seeking an additional person to join our Facilities crew. This position will help with the general maintenance around our physical plant and as such we are seeking a jack-of-all-trades type of dedicated worker. It requires physical labor, and will include some night and weekend duties. The position is open now and applications are available in the front office. Help us spread the word in the community if you know of someone who might be seeking employment. For more information, contact Deacon Phillip Jackson, our parish administrator. Peace, Fr.
