Canterbury Woods Swim & Tennis Club
2015 Newsletter
The CWSC Board welcomes you to the 2015 swim and tennis season!
While it has been a long, long winter we are anticipating warmer days that we can spend at the pool! We
have fun social events planned and our C-Serpents Swim Team is looking forward to a great season.
The pool survived the winter and the tennis fence is now completely painted, it looks great! The Board
decided to raise dues and once again ask our members to make a voluntary donation to the Capital
Improvement Fund. We hope that, after reading the enclosed letter, our members will again be generous
and make a contribution.
Liz Brocato and Amy Gay will be our co-Swim Team Representatives and we want to welcome Maggie
Neubig as our new head coach of our Division 10 C-Serpent swim team. Their leadership, the coaches
and the swimmers will, as always, be a huge part of our community. We will post pool closings due to
swim meets at the pool, on our website, at our Facebook page. Email notices will also be sent. Closing
dates are also noted on the enclosed calendar.
The Board would like to thank Margaret Thaxton and Jane Millward for their service to our pool. They
each served an amazing number of years helping our community. We will miss them! The Board would
also like to welcome new Board members to our pool – Mike Lewis and Chris Bauernshub. We know that
their volunteer service will help us continue to make our pool the very best! If you are interested in
serving on the board, please contact Chris Craig at kzcc1990@aol.com.
Social Events: Please see the enclosed Social Calendar for information regarding events for which we
need our members to volunteer.
Please note that a complete set of Operating Rules and Regulations are posted at the pool in the
lifeguards’ office and on our web site at www.cwpool.org. We urge all members to familiarize themselves
with these rules and regulations and for parents to discuss them with their children. These rules are for
the safety of everyone’s safety.
CWSC Board asks that each member continues to help us maintain the pool by making a voluntary
donation to the Capital Improvement Fund. We are looking forward to a great 2015 pool season! If you
have any concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to contact the board. Welcome Summer!

CWSC Communications We will be sending out announcements for the various swim, social, tennis
and other club activities via email, while continuing to place notices at the pool. In addition, look for clubrelated announcements concerning social activities and swim team happenings on our Facebook page.
The club also maintains a web site located at www.cwpool.org where announcements, events calendar,
meet information and a digital copy of this newsletter will be available for easy reference.
Annual Membership Meeting The annual Membership Meeting was held on March 10th at Braddock
Hall. Treasurer Bill Brocato presented the 2015 operating budget, which was passed unanimously by the
attending members. If you have any questions about the budget please contact Bill at
bill.brocato@gmmb.com or 703-323-0587.
Pool Maintenance Atlantic Pool Service will once again maintain and operate our pool this season. The
main pool is in good material condition but there are a few repairs needed to open the pool. Several
broken tiles will need to be replaced. The tennis court fence pool fences are looking great after last years’
painting job. Landscaping and selective tree removal is in the works.
Please plan to join us on Saturday, May 9th at 9 a.m. for our annual Club Spring Cleaning of the bath
house and grounds. This is a wonderful opportunity for children in search of community service hours.
Work will begin at 9 a.m. and continue until complete. We will supply drinks and snacks, as well as paint,
brushes, gardening shears, rakes and other equipment for all participants. This event is being held in
conjunction with the Swim Tem signup day.
Membership Information
In an effort to update our pool database, we ask that all members please complete and return this year’s
registration form located at the back of the newsletter. The preferred emergency contact will be a nonfamily member who is in a position to assist should an occasion a rise needing immediate attention at the
pool. The listing of family emergency contacts is maintained at the guard office and will be used only
when an immediate family member cannot be reached. Many members send in payments without the
form, not realizing that their email addresses have changed, for example. With updated and accurate
email addresses for our membership, we intend to increase targeted communications relating to the
club’s social activities, tennis program, triathlon, and swim team. For those members who do not have
ready access to email or Internet, we will continue to post notices of upcoming events at the pool. Your
membership number is the three-digit code on the newsletter mailing label, and for most is also your bond
number.
Membership Dues
After assessing budget estimates for pool operations, maintenance and capital fund requirements, your
Board presents the below fee structure for the 2015 season.





Early Payment Discounted Fee: $420 (if postmarked by April 27, 2015)
Annual Membership Dues: $445 (if received before opening day, May 23, 2015)
Late payment (after May 23rd): $470 (includes $25 late fee)
Summer membership: $470 (non-bond holders)
Inactive status: $80
Guest Passes
Each bondholder family receives 10 complimentary guest passes, if full payment is received before May
23, 2015. Each family’s Guest Pass allotment is maintained at the front gate. You must notify the guards
in the pool office when you wish to use one of your guest passes. Guest fees for the 2015 season:



Pre-planned parties or events: $2.50 / non-pool member
Daily usage fee: $5.00 / visit
If you have family members that visit for several weeks during the summer, please contact the
Membership Director to make arrangements for pool usage during their visit.
New Members
There is no waiting list for new members - we'd love to have you join us. In addition to the annual
membership dues, there is a one-time fee of $250 to purchase a membership bond. The membership
bond can be transferred or sold privately, as long as a $10 transfer fee is paid to the club and the bond is
in good standing.
Summer Membership
For one season only, a summer membership is available for non-bond holders. The summer membership
fee is $470. This limited membership is intended for families new to the neighborhood and who wish to
“try us out.” However, our club’s membership philosophy is that families wishing to use the pool for more
than one season shall purchase a bond and become fully vested members of the club. Special
exceptions can be arranged for short-term families who know their stay in the D.C. area will be limited to
2-3 years. Please contact the Membership Director to discuss your situation.
Renters
If your owner has a bond, renters in the neighborhood may pay the active membership dues of $445
(prior to May 23rd), and are also eligible for the discounted fee if payment is made by April 27th. Renters
must complete the 2015 Pool Registration Form and submit to the Membership Director, indicating the
name of the homeowner and bond number (if known).
Inactive Membership
If you hold a membership bond with CWSC and do not plan to use the pool facilities this season, Inactive
Status for the 2015 season must be requested in writing to the Board of Directors, along with the inactive
fee of $80.You may mail the registration form in this newsletter to make this request, or you may notify
your intent via email to the Membership Director at Darren_p10@yahoo.com. Mail to:
Canterbury Woods Swim Club
P.O. Box 1038
Springfield, VA 22151
The Board uses members’ inactive fees as a contribution to the capital improvement fund and to keep the
pool in good operating condition. It is important for bond holders to keep their accounts in good standing,
as a delinquent bond cannot be transferred.
Want To Sell Your Membership?
You are free to sell your membership bond in any manner you choose. You are responsible for paying
membership fees or inactive dues as long as you are the registered owner of the membership bond. You
must pay a $10 transfer fee and all delinquent fees, if any, before the purchaser will be allowed to
assume ownership of the bond and use the facilities.
If you have any membership questions, contact Darren Phelps at (703) 426-1611, or by e-mail at
darren_p10@yahoo.com
2015 Swim Team - C-Serpents
The NVSL 10 C-Serpents will kick off the season with a team sign-up (including DONUTS!) on Saturday,
May 9th from 9:00-11:00 am at Canterbury Woods Pool. Interested swimmers of all abilities and their
parents are invited to attend. This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about our great team, meet
the coaches, and socialize with the other swimmers. Our team suits will be available for purchase at the
breakfast. Swimmers age six and under should come to learn about our Super Team. The ability to swim
the width of the diving well is a prerequisite for participating on the Super Team.
Swim practice will begin on Tuesday, May 26th. Ages 10 and under will practice from 5:00-6:00 pm.
Ages 11 and older will practice from 6:00-7:00 pm. Morning practices will begin when school is out: 8:00
am for the older group; 9:00 am for the younger group, and 10:00 am for Super Team members. Evening
practices will be held from 6:00-7:00 pm on Tuesday and Wednesday nights for those swimmers who
have legitimate conflicts with morning practice times. Pep rallies will be held at the pool Friday evenings
before all A meets.
Volunteers are needed to keep our swim team functioning. At home meets, we need to fill at least 31
positions on the deck. If your child is on the team, you should plan on working in some capacity. We are
all volunteers…and together we all form a team! Questions? Contact our Swim Team Representatives:

2015 Tennis Program
We are currently looking for a new Tennis Director. If you would like to volunteer please contact us. Each
membership in good standing may have one key at no cost. Two keys are kept in the office for temporary
use. If you borrow a key please remember to return it promptly. Please remember to relock the gates
after play.
Please do not climb the fences. Fencing damaged by climbers and falling trees is on the repair list.
Raft Night (Thursday evenings beginning June 18th, 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm)
Raft Night specialty dinners were a hit with families last year. Liz Brocato, Inger Maslin, Angela Kokkinis,
Kelly Kovacev and countless other volunteers served wonderful meals this past season. It takes many
hands to make these happen. Please reach out to Chris Bauernshub, cbauernshub@kw.com if you
would like to volunteer for a raft night dinner event.
Social
Chris Bauernshub, cbauernshub@kw.com, is our Social Director this year. We need volunteers for the
wine downs and a few of the parties. Joyce Miller has volunteered for the opening Wine & Cheese Party,
Rachel Ebbeson the School’s Out Party. We need a volunteer for the July 4th dinner and the End of
Summer Adult Party. The Italian Potluck was cancelled last year since no one stepped up to volunteer. IF
you enjoyed this event in the past please let us know if we can count on you to get it going again. If you
want to help out with a wine down or party, please contact Chris Bauernshub, cbauernshub@kw.com. As
with last year, we will not have an entrance fee for the Wine Down’s. Instead, we will use tickets
and charge on a per beverage basis. The first two tickets will cost $5, each ticket thereafter will
cost $3.

on a first come, first serve basis. The guidelines for scheduling a private party are provided below:







Private parties may use the pavilion and grills Monday through Wednesday day and evening.
The pavilion and grills may not be available on Thursday and Friday evenings due to Raft Night
Dinners and Swim Team Pep Rallies.
When swim team season is over the pavilion will be available on Friday evenings.
The pavilion may not be used for private parties on the weekends.
For weekend parties, there is a canopy available that the host or hostess may borrow for use in
the grassy area outside the pool deck. Please request it from the guard on duty when you arrive.
The host or hostess of the party is responsible for payment, prior to the party, for nonmembers attending the event.
The host or hostess of the party is responsible for setting up before, and cleaning up after, the
party.
These guidelines are in place to ensure the pool will be an enjoyable place for all members.

Operating Rules and Regulations
Among the most common misunderstandings regarding pool rules are the following:







Admission to the club shall only be granted by the lifeguard staff after verifying the member’s
good standing against the membership list maintained at the front entrance.
Food is only to be consumed in the pavilion area and on the grassy areas inside the pool fence.
The pavilion and grills are available for use by individual members’ families anytime there is no
private party or pool event scheduled. Please clean the grills after use.
Smoking is permitted only in the grassy area inside the pool fence.
Consumption of alcoholic beverages is strictly prohibited, except at authorized and
sponsored pool board events.
Children under the age of 16 years old are not allowed in the pool during break periods (this also
means that kids are not allowed to sit on the side of the pool with their feet in the water, even at
the shallow end steps).
Only one person is permitted on the diving board or ladder at a time, and only one bounce is
permitted per dive.
