Summer Enrichment 2015
The YMCA and Delaware City Schools have partnered together to bring you a wide variety of
Summer Enrichment Programming. Looking for science, leadership, technology, health,
fitness, cooking, culture, or board games that teach valuable life and 21st century skills?
You’re in the right place!
All sessions are a week long (Monday-Friday) and run from 8:30 AM - 11:00AM. $60/Class.

Registration Deadline is May 20, 2015. Classes may be cancelled on May 20th if not enough
participants. There will be a $5 late fee for any registrations after May 20th. Please contact

Board, Not Bored Students! (Grades 1-6; 7-12)

Dates: July 6-10 Gr. 1-6; July 27-31 Gr. 7-12
Settlers of Catan! Pandemic! Ticket to Ride! Do you love games like these, or interested in giving
them a try? Do you want to take a shot at making your own great game? Come join us for a week
long exploration of some truly unique games, as well as creating our own games. In addition to lots
of game playing, students will journal about their impressions of different game elements, then use
their thoughts to begin to develop a game of their own.
Bugs Without Borders (Grades 4-6)

Want to see odd, bizarre-looking animals up close and personal? Welcome to Bugs without Borders!
Arthropods are strange tiny animals with fascinating bodies and behaviors. They are the most
abundant animals on Earth, with more species than all other animals and plants combined! In this
class, we’ll study how our creepy crawly neighbors live and how they both harm and help us. We’ll
learn how to collect, identify, preserve, and photograph them like the experts do, as well as admiring
their weird beauty as we observe them under microscopes.
Computer Animation (Grades 6-8; 9-12)
Teacher: Lisa Nye

Dates: June 22-June 26 Gr. 9-12; June 29-July 3 Gr. 6-8
Students will learn traditional animation theory, principles and techniques, and apply them through
Adobe Flash. Join us to create a quick project in Blender 3D animation software. We will add title,
credits, music, voiceovers & sound effects in iMovie. The class will combine both art and
technological skills. Students will come away with a DVD of their animation projects and foundational
knowledge of a professional skill.
Cook Healthy, Eat Healthy, Live Healthy (Grades 6-8; 9-12)

Learning to cook and eat healthy at a young age can have a lasting impact on our lives. Come
explore the healthiest options for snacks and meals while learning the math that goes into cooking
and maintaining a healthy lifestyle through easy-to-do exercise. Put your skills to the test and learn
food prep safety in cooking mini-labs!
Crazy Chemistry (Grades 3-5; 6-8)
Teacher: Beth Maclehose Location: Willis Dates: June 8-12 Gr. 3-5; June 15-19 Gr. 6-8
Do you like to explore how two or more substances interact? Have dreams of becoming a mad
scientist? Enjoy making scientific messes but your parents have banned them? Then this course is
for you. Come safely explore the fun world of chemistry and let the mess happen at school.
Digital Publishing (Grades 2-5)
Teacher: Heather Kuhn Location: Willis Dates: June 15-19 Gr. 2-5
Learn how to illustrate, design, and publish digitally. Come with stories you have already written
previously or you may write throughout the week. Explore a variety of programs and apps that allow
you to draw, write, and publish in a digital platform!
Football Fundamentals and Fitness (Grades 3-4; 5-6)
Teacher: Michael Freado Location: Willis Dates: June 8-12 Gr. 3-4; June 15-19 Gr. 3-4; June 29-July 3 Gr. 5-6
If you love football or are interested in the sport, or if you simply enjoy challenges and want to learn
more about planning and organizing, this is the perfect camp for you! Participants will get the chance
to work on the essential skills of football, as well as fitness techniques for overall wellness and
tips/tricks to become a better student-athlete! Activities will include football instruction, exercise, guest
speakers, entertainment, and much more! You will leave this class more prepared for ANYTHING you
want to accomplish!
French Food & Culture (Grades 5-7)
Teacher: Becky Shick Location: Willis Dates: June 15-19 Gr. 5-7
Join us as we learn about, cook, and sample foods from French-speaking countries! Each day will
focus on a particular cultural celebration and region of the French-speaking world. Students will learn
basic food vocabulary, how to shop at a market, and how to order at a restaurant. They will create a
travel log of what they have learned including the authentic recipes to try at home! Bon appétit!
GirlVentures (Grades 5-8; 9-12)
Teacher: Caitlyn McGrew

Dates: June 15-19 Gr. 5-8; July 6-10 Gr. 9-12
Calling all girls! Through outdoor adventure and leadership activities the goal is to empower
adolescent girls to develop and express their strengths. Different themes each day will focus on
issues girls face such as self-esteem, body image, and healthy friendships.
Kids Cooking Essentials (Grades 2-5)
Teacher: Heather Kuhn and Mandi Furgiuele Location: Willis Dates: June 8-12 Gr. 2-5
Learning to cook and eat healthy at a young age can have a lasting impact on our lives. The class will
focus on the importance of healthy cooking and eating throughout the day. Each day will center
around a specific meal such as breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and even desserts! Learn the
importance of food safety, following a recipe, and making healthy choices.
Learn, Lead, Live! (Grades 9-12)
Teacher: Jordan Blackburn Location: Hayes Dates: June 8-12 Gr. 9-12
Interested in being a leader in your school or community? Maybe you want to sharpen your skills to
be at your best! In this course, students will be introduced to basic leadership theory and develop
skills of self-awareness, communication, planning, and pursuing goals. Through individual and
collaborative inquiry and research, students will analyze a variety of viewpoints on contemporary
leadership issues.
Native American Tribes of Ohio (Grades 4-5; 6-7)
Teacher: Adam Cramer

Dates: June 15-19 Gr. 4-5; July 20-24 Gr. 6-7
Jump into a week of learning about Ohio's Historic and Prehistoric tribes! The week will consist of
learning about Native American culture, history and famous individuals through hands on activities.
Real Science...and So Much More (Grades 6-12)

Get an early start! Summer is a great time for science fair experiments. All the plants and animals that
are alive and active in the warmer months can make great subjects. And even if you're not into life
sciences and you're launching bottle rockets instead, a pleasant 75 degree day is much more
enjoyable for data collection than a chilly 25 in the winter. Join the Pace Science Team this Summer!
Spanish Fun with Food (Grades 5-7)
Teacher: Trista Todt Location: Willis Dates: July 20-24 Gr. 5-7
In this class, students will learn Spanish related to food. We will use the language to learn how to
order in a restaurant, buy foods in a market, and prepare a celebration. Each day will include
language and cultural instruction along with cooking authentic foods and drinks. Of course, we will try
all of the foods and drinks, too. Students will bring home recipes to try again at home with their
families. This hands-on class will be muy interesante!
Stop Motion Animation & Green Screen Effects (Grades 6-8)
Teacher: Lisa Nye
Location: Hayes
Dates: June 8-12 Gr. 6-8
Students will learn a little history of animation and the art of visual story telling. They will come up with
an idea, make a storyboard, create a set, take pictures, create their stop motion video in iMovie,
adding titles, credits, music and sound effects! We will also experiment with green screen effects. At
the end of the session students will leave with a DVD of their masterpiece!
Wilderness Survival (Grades 5-8; 9-12)
Teacher: Adam Haynes Location: Willis/Blue Limestone
Dates: July 6-10 Gr. 9-12; July
27-31 Gr. 5-8
Campers will learn outdoor living and wilderness survival skills. Start a fire without a match! Make a
shelter without a tent! Cook a delicious meal without a kitchen! Save and aid an injured friend! Build
teamwork and leadership skills! This camp will be based out of Willis but take place primarily at Blue
Limestone Park.
