RECYCLE ENERGY FROM WASTEWATER DE-5 Every day, large amounts of energy are used on heating domestic water. Afterwards, the energy is flushed out with wastewater from showers, faucets, washing machines, dishwashers etc. The hot wastewater contains large amounts of energy which is lost when the water is flushed down the drain. As well as having a negative impact on the environment, the heating of domestic water is a large expenditure for businesses and institutions. ENERGY REUSE DE-5 Defined Energy has developed a concept whereby it is possible to recycle up to 70% of energy otherwise lost with the wastewater. Our solution includes a module making it easy and simple to monitor the consumption and saving on the internet. The recycled energy from wastewater is used to preheat domestic water, thus requiring less energy for heating the domestic water. Our solution is ideal for preheating domestic water in combination with oil, gas, district heating, geothermal, solar power etc. DE-5 is a Faroese developed and produced heat exchanger. Defined Energy owns the patent on the heat exchanger which functionally is comparable to a radiator. The cold domestic water is heated when both the hot wastewater and the cold water come in proximity to each other, though without contact, cooling down the wastewater in the process. INN IN Hot wastewater DE-5 is composed of trays each containing five spirals. The cold domestic water flows through the coils and the hot wastewater flows on top of the coils in opposite direction of the domestic water, causing it to heat up. Wastewater flows from the top down through the trays to the bottom tray and then further down the drain. The Domestic water enters the lowest tray and runs up through the trays to the top tray after which it is fed into the building. As the hot wastewater migrates down through the trays, it gets colder because the energy is (taken out and) used on the cold domestic water which gets warmer for each tray that it enters. OUT Heated domestic water The illustration shows how the cold domestic water is heated. DE-5 is composed of trays each containing five spirals. The cold domestic water flows through the coils and the hot wastewater flows on top of the coils in opposite direction as the domestic water, which therefore is heated. IN Cold domestic water OUT Chilled wastewater 2/4 CONTROL OF CONSUMPTION AND SAVING MATERIAL With DE-5 solution from Defined Energy consumers have access to all data on consumption and saving on the internet. With a user name and password, you can always log on and monitor your consumption. It is easy to get a good overview of the daily consumption as well as particular times during the day. The heat exchanger is made of material with a long service life. The expected lifetime is 30 years or more. Materials are environmentally compatible. It is expected that most of materials can be recycled when the heat exchanger must be replaced. The case is made of plastic, which thanks to new technology can easily be recycled. The trays are made from stainless steel (316L), whose durability is better than stainless steel and is 100% recyclable. The remaining bits can also be recycled without major problems. Production is carried out on the Faroe Islands, Sweden and Denmark by personnel with high technical expertise. The tools that are used in the production, is specifically designed for the purpose. ENVIRONMENT Each year, 3000 TWh is used for heating water in Europe which is then flushed out as wastewater. The cost is EUR 300 billion and CO2 emissions 600 million metric ton. With Defined Energy’s solution implemented in all households, businesses and institutions the CO2 emissions could be reduced by 420 million metric ton. It would also mean an annual saving of EUR 200 billion on heating domestic water. A swimming pool with 100,000 visitors a year has a consumption of approx. 200 MWh for heating shower water. This consumption leads to CO2 emission of 60 metric ton per year. With the solution from Defined Energy consumption would be reduced to only 60 MWh. The annual emission would be reduced by 42 metric ton, from 60 to 18 metric ton. The illustration shows how the cold water is heated. In larger installations, several units can be merged together into a larger unit. 3/4 INSTALLATION DE-5 is a passive and simple system. This is an advantage in relation to the installation, operation and functionality. The images illustrates how the heat exchanger is to be connected to the drain pipes from the showers. The number of units connected depends on the amount of wastewater flow in order to obtain the highest efficiency. ADVICE Personal guidance and counselling are key elements in our customer service. Our highly-qualified employees with extensive experience enable us to provide our customers with service on a high professional level. Together with our customers, we find the best solution to meet their current need for reducing energy consumption. IT PAYS OFF Many energy solutions are not very economical. This is primarily due to a high cost, which first provide returns after many years. With our concept we project a fiveyear return on the investment. With our built-in cleaning system there is very little maintenance and Defined Energy offers full service for a small annual fee. CASE SWIMMING HALL IN TÓRSHAVN Four DE-5 heat exchangers are installed in the Faroe islands main swimming pool, which has about 165,000 visitors annually. The annual energy consumption in 2013 for heating the shower water was 327 MWh. This corresponds to a CO2 emission of 110 tons. Measurements with DE-5 heat exchanger system so far shows an annual energy reduction v+vof 250 MWh. This corresponds to a reduction in CO2 of 79 metric ton. WHO CAN USE THE DE-5? All companies, organizations and others who have high consumptions of hot water can choose the DE-5 solution from Defined Energy.
