Marty Grosz On Diga Diga Doo
The last time I had
recorded for Bob Koester’s
Delmark label was in 1959 as
a sideman on an Albert
Nicholas – Art Hodes session.
When Bob and I met after not
seeing each other for 55
years, we both came to the
conclusion that each of us
looked the same as we had a
half-century before. Certainly
our baggy trousers and elbowpatch jackets supported this
observation, as did our banter,
peppered with expressions
like “groovy”, “out-of sight”,
and “hubba-hubba”.
Bob was curious to know
if I could still summon up some
of the “old pepperoni”. You, the
listener, must be the judge.
I asked Andy Schumm,
the cornetist, to recommend
some Chicago musicians who
might enjoy playing on a CD
that I was putting together for
Delmark. I had already signed
on pianist Jim Dapogny who
would bring some of his
arrangements. The bulk of the
personnel would come from
bassist Beau Sample’s “Fat Babies”, a seven-piece ensemble that
regularly plays hot jazz for eager “retro-dancers”..
In addition to Jim Dapogny, who lives in Ann Arbor, we were
lucky that Texan, Jonathan Doyle, tenor sax and clarinet, happened
to be in Chicago. The addition of his tenor sax gave us four horns, and
his clarinet playing provided for exciting duets with John Otto.
My Philly pal, Panic Slim, played trombone on the 2014 session.
1.”Why Couldn’t It Be Poor Little Me?” makes a fine stomp, fun to
improvise on. Bandleader Isham Jones wrote a slew of popular hits.
A short list would include: “It Had To Be You”, “On The Alamo”,
“Swinging Down The Lane”, “I’ll See You In My Dreams”, and “There
Is No Greater Love”.
2. “A Jazz Holiday” makes a fine vehicle for the two reeds. It was
composed by Benton W. Overstreet who had hit the jackpot with
“There’ll Be Some Changes Made”.
4. “Blue (and Brokenhearted)” from 1922 was conceived as a
peppy fox trot, but over the years it was slowed down to emphasize
its melancholy message.
5. “In A Little Spanish Town”, written as a syrupy waltz in the
nineteen-twenties, was rendered as a 4/4 swinger by jazz bands.
Here the opening chorus gets a quasi-Latino treatment. Fun for the
rhythm section.
6. “Sweet Sue” was a 1928 hit and the first in a long line of
winners to spring from the fertile mind of composer Victor Young. For
years it was a jam-session favorite. But then with the rise of Rock
music it was consigned to oblivion like the other songs in this
collection. Paul Asaro’s piano work recalls the effervescent style of
the great Fats Waller.
7. “My Daddy Rocks Me” dates from 1924. What’s it about?
Guess. Jim Dapogny conjured up the vamp which opens and closes
our performance, leaving it unresolved like an Argentine tango.
2
8. “Prince of Wails” (1924) was written to spoof the almost
hysterical adoration provoked by the visit of the future Edward the
Seventh to the United States. Notwithstanding the number’s
lugubrious subject, the piece is well constructed with interesting
harmonies. Jim Dapogny put this performance together.
9. I included “Hold Me” (1933) because my buddy, Norm Murphy
(deceased) used to play it prettily on his trumpet when we had a band
at Chicago’s Blackstone Hotel.
10. “Diga Diga Doo” was introduced by Duke Ellington at
Harlem’s Cotton Club in 1928, sung by and danced to by a chorus
line. Its simple minor-key harmonies have made it a favorite of
improvisers. Here Andy Schumm demonstrates his prowess at “blueblowing”, a technique used with great success by singer Red
McKenzie in the 1920s. Blowing on a comb wrapped in newsprint the
performer produces a sound approaching that of a muted trumpet. It
would appear to be the easiest thing to carry off, but it’s not. Just try
to do it. I bet you’ll wind up sounding like some drunk with a
lampshade on his head.
11. “Forevermore” started life as a “schmaltzy” waltz. But then
Jimmie Noone and his Apex Club Orchestra with Earl Hines on piano
got hold of it and transformed it into a hot ballad in 4/4 time. The longline melody has haunted me for years. John Otto does the clarinet
honors.
12. “Rose of Washington Square” was a big hit for comedienne
Fanny Brice in the 1920 Ziegfeld Follies. The tune’s structure lends
itself to hot improvising.
13. “How Deep Is The Ocean”. I learned to play this touching
Irving Berlin song when I was a teen. I cannot recall how or why. It’s
usually rendered at a lugubrious slow tempo. But in my head I
imagined it as Louis Armstrong might have stomped it off in 1932.
14. “A Good Man Is Hard To Find” appeared in 1918. Though
times have changed, the song’s message still applies.
15. “Church Street Sobbin’ Blues” was recorded in 1919 by the
Louisiana Five with Alcide “Yellow” Nunez on clarinet and the
composer, Anton Lada, on drums and xylophone. Lada also
composed “Arkansas Blues” which was recorded in 1924 by the
Mound City Blue Blowers, featuring Red McKenzie on comb &
newspaper. It went on to sell over a million records, a phenomenal
achievement in those days. “Church Street” is a “Blues Plus” in that it
has the usual 12-bar strain, followed by a key change to a sixteen-bar
strain, and then to another strain. We follow the pattern used by
guitarist Eddie Lang on his delightful recording, playing only two
strains, the first in Bb, the second in F, and then back to the first, a
regular 12-bar blues.
Have I made myself clear? Probably not. To understand this and
other musical concepts, I suggest that you take up an instrument,
study and practice until you become accomplished, and then attach
yourself to someone who can support you.
16. “Strut Miss Lizzie”, a gem from the fertile minds of Creamer
and Layton, who also wrote “Way Down Yonder In New Orleans”,
“After You’ve Gone”, and “Walkin’ The Dog”.
18. “The Lady In Red” from 1935, is about an imaginary “hot
tomato” who causes men’s throats to go dry and their tongues to
hang out. The composers utilized the notoriety of a real-life “scarlet
woman” (actually wearing a red dress) who informed on “Public
Enemy Number One” John Dillinger to G-men (FBI agents). After she
told them that she and Dillinger would be at the movies in the
Biograph Theater on Chicago”s Near North Side, agents waited till
Dillinger was leaving the theater, whereupon they pumped enough
lead into his body to sink a rowboat. The press went wild, The “Lady
In Red” enjoyed two weeks of fame, and a couple of “tin pan alley”
songwriters collected some royalty checks.

AACM CELEBRATES 50 YEARS! The influential Association for the Advancement of Creative
Musicians is having a year long celebration with many special events. Legendary reedist Roscoe
Mitchell was just in Chicago to perform at Constellation celebrating the life of fellow AACM member,
much missed saxophonist & Velvet Lounge owner Fred Anderson. April 23-26 will be special master
classes & concerts, culminating in a special performance on April 26th at Mandel Hall at University of
Chicago called 50/50 featuring 50 AACM musicians all performing in one final concert! Check out
www.aacmchicago.org or 312-952-9383 for info. Younger AACM member Ernest Dawkins’ Live the
Spirit Residency Big Band presents their Afro Opera ”A Tribute to Nelson Mandela” at the Carruthers
Center, 700 E Oakwood Blvd on April 13th, and 2 gigs at Constellation: April 29th with Bridge #8 with
Douglas Ewart & Mars Williams (with fantastic reedist Keefe Jackson opening), and May 7th with
Dawkins’ original Rhythm & Rhyme. Look out for a special feature on AACM’s 50th in Jazz Times
magazine as well as a feature story on East Coast jazz/blues/R&B sax star, Sax Gordon, who just
released a killer Delmark recording called In The Wee Small Hours (Delmark 5018.)
Congrats to standout local jazz guitarist Andy Brown on the success of his new solo jazz guitar
recording, Soloist (Delmark 5019.) He just celebrated this new release with a well-received performance
at Evanston’s Whiskey Lounge, also celebrating his 40th birthday! The Chicago Tribune’s Howard Reich
wrote a wonderful review of this concert, after having highlighted Andy’s new album as one of the best
of the year so far in a previous Tribune article: “Brown packs so much melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic
information into each cut that one very nearly forgets a single instrument is at play.”
Have you checked out the new recording, Diga Diga Doo (Delmark 256) from legendary jazz
guitarist Marty Grosz? The octogenarian joined the young and wildly popular Chicago hot jazz band,
The Fat Babies in a very special collaboration. The last time Mr. Grosz recorded with Delmark was as
a sideman on Albert Nicholas with Art Hodes’ All Star Stompers’ Albert’s Back in Town (209) in 1959!
The Fat Babies will be performing at the Elkhart Jazz Fest in Indiana and at America’s Classic Jazz
Fest in Olympia, WA in June, in addition to their local weekly gigs at the Green Mill and The Honky Tonk
BBQ.
We are excited about the reissue of J.B. Hutto’s classic HAWK SQUAT (Delmark 617). This “rough
& rowdy blues” recording from ’68 will get the deluxe reissue treatment as did Junior Wells’ Southside
Blues Jam (with Buddy Guy & Otis Spann.) The new Hawk Squat features 6 previously unissued tracks
and a 20 page booklet with many never before seen photos, and entertaining new notes from producer
Bob Koester reminiscing about J.B. and Turner’s Lounge.
Look out for new Delmark blues releases coming in 2015 from Jimmy Burns (produced by the one
and only famed blues historian Dick Shurman, with some soulful new originals penned by Jimmy and
Billy Flynn,) a killer funky modern Chicago blues session that will turn heads from Omar Coleman, a
rising star on harmonica and vocals, as well as a new house rockin’ one with Dave Weld and the
Imperial Flames featuring sax legend Abb Locke.
Other recent Riverside studio activity have included local roots reggae star Stann Champion &
Roots Rock Society, blind gospel/blues keyboardist Big DooWopper, and Florida based blues/soul
singer Billy Seward, with special guest Dave Specter on guitar. Did you catch our famed local guitarist
Specter at his recent Adventures in Guitar Series show at his S.P.A.C.E. with Brother John Kattke?!
We still can’t stop listening to their standout recording from last year, Message In Blue! (Delmark 836)
We are fortunate to have new spots for live local blues performances in town. Be sure to check out
Township in Logan Square for live music; Max Brumbach (great musician and original owner of The
SmokeDaddy and The California Clipper) has taken over this cool spot in Logan Square and is featuring
live blues, including The Woodlawn 4 (Scott Dirks, Justin O’Brien, Dave Waldman, Willy Greeson
plus special guests.) Guitar star Rockin’ Johnny Burgin just played a successful Son Seals tribute
show there. And a popular downtown restaurant River Roast is featuring a Blues & Brews Brunch every
weekend booked by Jason Stern, and has featured many Delmark artists. Thanks to Dave Hoekstra
who has featured both of these spots on his Nocturnal Journal on WGN and his website. The newly
opened Lagunitas Brewery in Douglas Park on West 17th Street is featuring local blues stars every day
at 4:20pm (!), including the ageless Delmark artist Jimmy Johnson, being booked by former Buddy
Guy’s Legends manager/booker Brian Fadden. And don’t forget the somewhat new Hyde Park hotspot
for music, The Promontory, which has been featuring live jazz and blues on a regular basis. Unsung local
jazz legend, Delmark artist Ari Brown is headlining June 5th.
We were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of beloved Chicago Blues guitarist/vocalist James
Wheeler. James was a very underrated Chicago bluesman, who had 2 fantastic Delmark albums as a
leader, 1998’s Ready (Delmark 719,) and Can’t Take It from 2000 (Delmark 743.) His original
songwriting, stellar and distinctive lead and rhythm playing, and laid back, full of soul vocals were such
an inspiration to many. He had his own popular group in the ‘60’s, The Jaguars, and made so many
stars sound better with his fretwork, including long stints with Otis Clay, Otis Rush, Magic Slim, Willie
Kent, and Mississippi Heat, as well as his older brother, the late harp star Golden Wheeler. He had
been leading a weekly jam at Rosa’s for years, looking and sounding great up until his unfortunate
passing on Christmas day. “Steady Rollin’ Wheeler” was such a sweet gentleman, and will sorely be
missed.

Andy Brown
This past January was one of the coldest and snowiest in Chicago
history...and that’s saying something! What a better way to warm up than
to go down to your local recording studio and lay down some solo guitar
tracks. The results of that frigid evening are what you hear on this album.
In an effort to keep the proceedings as relaxed as possible, I asked
engineer Scott Steinman to keep the tape rolling as I went from tune to
tune. This approach worked well, and the result was that I felt like I was
playing a typical solo gig. When on the job, I try to keep things as loose
as possible, aiming for a good flow and playing what seems right for the
moment. That’s easier in the corner of a noisy restaurant than in a
recording studio, but Scott did a great job helping me forget where I was.
Playing solo jazz guitar can be a daunting and lonely task at times.
I’ve been fortunate to have contact with masters of the art, and their work
continues to enrich my life. The following are some thoughts on a few of
them:
Perhaps the reason I’ve concentrated on solo guitar as much as I
have is due to the strong influence of Kenny Poole. His name may not be
known to every jazz guitar fan, but to those who have heard him, he was
one of the best solo jazz guitar players of all time. He was a fixture on the
Cincinnati jazz scene when I was coming up there, and he became my
hero after the first night I saw him play solo guitar at a long-defunct
restaurant appropriately named “Funky’s.” Later Kenny became my
mentor and friend. While he never gave me any formal lessons, he did
offer succinct responses to the endless questions I would pepper him
with at his gigs around town. When I asked him how to play fingerstyle
guitar, he replied, “put the pick down and use your fingers.” When I asked
him how to get better at solo guitar, he told me “get a gig and do it,” so
that’s what I did.
Hardly a night went by when Kenny didn’t speak of his passion for
guitarist George Van Eps. He instilled in me a deep love for George’s time
feel and harmonic genius. George will always be THE master as far as I’m
concerned.
Kenny also had such warmth for Joe Pass’ virtuosity and spontaneity.
Joe pretty much wrote the book on modern day solo guitar playing, and
the breadth of the style he created is truly amazing!
The first time I heard Ted Greene was in Kenny’s car after a gig.
Someone had given him a cassette copy of Ted’s “Solo Guitar” album and
like me, Kenny had never heard Ted. We both knew Ted’s reputation of
being a total master, and were rendered speechless as the first tune of
the album confirmed Ted’s genius. One of the best days of my life was on
my 30th birthday when on a trip to LA, I was able to take a lesson from
Ted before his untimely death. The folks at TedGreene.com have done a
fantastic job furthering this amazing musician’s legacy.
Soloist
The great Cal Collins, who along with Kenny Poole was the other
giant of Cincinnati jazz guitar, was one of my earliest idols. I first saw him
when I was in high school, and his focus on the chordal aspect of the
guitar made a big impact on me. He made two of the most swinging solo
guitar albums I’ve ever heard. Both records oozed with the naturalness
and fire that made him a legend. His warmth and encouragement to me
as a young player meant so much!
While not a solo guitarist, Ed Bickert’s chordal approach, touch and
feel have affected my solo playing a lot. The memories of seeing him
conjure up gorgeous tones and soulful ideas night after night during
several trips I took to Toronto to hear him continues to inspire me.
Lenny Breau is an endless source of wonder for a guitarist. The
numerous techniques and approaches he invented for playing guitar
unaccompanied have yet to be fully understood, at least by me!
My friend Howard Alden is one of the best solo guitarists I’ve ever
heard. Like Lenny, he has countless ideas at his disposal to confront the
situation of playing alone...and his creativity is boundless.
At the one workshop I ever saw Kenny give, he mentioned the
importance of Chet Atkins, Andrés Segovia and João Gilberto when it
came to playing solo guitar. I couldn’t agree more!
The tunes that ended up on this recording are just songs I like to play.
All of them were spontaneous choices, pretty loosely arranged (except for
the Van Eps piece “Tango El Bongo”). I prefer the seat-of-your-pants
approach, as you can tell when you hear the record! All the songs were
played fingerstyle, except for “God Child” where I used a pick. I used two
guitar/amplifier combinations, a 60s Gibson Tal Farlow through a Peavey
Special 130, and a 50s Gibson ES 175 through a 60s Fender Vibrolux.
Even though playing solo guitar is done by oneself, it takes years of
playing with others to be able to present a musical and listenable
experience when playing alone. I hope I have succeeded in doing that on
this recording. I’d like to thank all the great musicians I’ve had the
pleasure of playing with over the years. They have taught me by example
what the important elements of music are.
As a teenage blues guitarist, I spent endless hours with the classic
albums recorded by Delmark. Hearing those old LPs and visiting the Jazz
Record Mart were two of the reasons I fell in love with the city of Chicago.
To have my own recording on this famed label is a great thrill for me, and
I’d like to say thanks to all involved for making it possible.
Finally, I’d like to give a heartfelt thanks to all the establishments that
have hired and continue to hire me. These jobs give me an opportunity to
develop my approach to solo playing. And of course nothing would be
possible without the listeners who come out and give me a reason to play.
This is for you!

WHAT THE CRITICS ARE SAYING ABOUT HOWARD ALDEN / ANDY BROWN - HEAVY ARTILLERY
(ANDY’S PREVIOUS ALBUM, DELMARK 5008 FROM 2014)
Gorgeous, virtuosic solo fingerstyle jazz guitar recording
from one of Chicago’s tastiest and most talented jazz guitarists,
Andy Brown!! Andy’s recent Delmark CD with NYC guitar great
Howard Alden, Heavy Artillery, was recently featured in
Downbeat’s “Best Album’s of 2014” article.
“A tasteful, musical player…for all his easygoing
virtuosity, he places the emphasis on musical phrase
rather than pyrotechnics.” - Chicago Tribune
“Brown manages to wrap his rich harmonic style in a
unhurried feel that calls to mind the spirit of
George Van Eps with a current harmonic understanding…
overflowing with skill and imagination.”
– All About Jazz
“Brown is a world-class guitarist who is more than
capable of giving a clinic on accompaniment and solo
guitar performance.” – Just Jazz Guitar
4
“An uncommonly good player...brings to mind the fine
Canadian guitarist Ed Bickert and warmth suggestive
of Joe Pass…has a gift for melody and plenty of
rhythmic confidence… projects a naturalness when
phrasing, and his overall intelligence makes an
understatement and subtlety virtues.”
– Frank-John Hadley, Downbeat Magazine
“Brown has an understated
style whereby less is
clearly more. That’s not
to say that he doesn’t
have fantastic chops. He
can rip it up easily as
anyone. Yet his
dedication is firstly to
clean, thoughtful
musicality, rather than
just showy flash.”
– Chicago Jazz Magazine
LP vs CD
I am asked from time to time whether I prefer LP’s or CD’s. I
always answer that, at 82, my hearing is such that I can’t really tell
the difference.
I have noticed that JRM customers usually buy one or the
other exclusively. I feel sorry for people who only buy LP’s because
there’s a mountain of material that’s simply not available on LP.
Indeed there is probably ten or twenty (or more) times as much
music available on CD as is presently on LP.
Yes, I have heard the complaints that CD’s sound “tinny”
compared to LP’s.
But I wonder if people who say this have heard recently
mastered CD’s because I am told that some of the engineers who
mastered early CD’s were in love with the upper range of sound.
Also, I wonder if some people aren’t comparing downloads,
which never have the full quality of a CD.
As you may have noticed, Delmark is expanding its LP
catalog. But I must tell you that there are many Delmark CD’s that
will probably not appear on L P because the market doesn’t seem
to be there to justify the cost of an LP release.
People ask “WHY LP’s ARE GETTING MORE EXPXENSIVE THAN
CD’s?” When we press CD’s of decent quantity, the pressing plant picks up
the cost of preparing the CD masters. Also the CD pressings cost about half
as much as LP pressings. But, unless we have metal parts to reissue an LP,
that considerable investment is why we must be careful about LP releases.
And LP jackets cost much more than CD booklets and tray cards. (Sadly, as
a result, Delmark will be raising our LP price to $19.98 starting in June.)
It takes up to five months to get an LP pressed because there are so few
plants and they are overwhelmed. Perhaps many old LP presses were sold
for scrap.
One more thing about LP’s — the thick ones. Some folks seem to think
these 180 and 200 LP’s have deeper grooves. Not so. They have the same
depth as the regular LP’s, The only benefit from thickness is that they resist
warpage. If you shelve your LP’s properly they won’t warp.
(If they do warp place them between two sheets of glass and heat them
back to flat with one of those old fashioned desk lamps. This also works for
78’s.) I should mention that certain RCA-pressed records from the c.60’s
resist re-flattening.)
Well, whichever you prefer, we hope you’ll get them from JRM.

Humphrey Lyttelton In Canada
excerpts from the liner notes for the newly reissued Sackville CD
A passion for jazz burst out of the flames of newly-liberated
Europe in the 1940s as a generation of young people shared but
one manifestation of the American phenomenon which now
reaches into every corner of the world.
American jazz musicians had taken the message of the music
to the Old World in person or through records since the 1920s but
it had only superficially sunk into the consciousness of Europeans.
With the notable exception of Django Reinhardt it was an adjunct
of dance music and the mysteries of jazz music’s improvisatory
nature eluded them. It was all the more ironic, therefore, that the
first and most dedicated of jazz scholars were European. Those
pioneers, more than any other, set the tone of jazz appreciation
and perceived many of the qualities which made jazz such a
distinct and superior music to the “hot dance music” which usually
masqueraded as the real thing.
Simultaneously, it seemed, jazz music began to be played in
every European country. Most of the musicians playing the music
were young, idealistic newcomers who were not part of the dance
band establishment. The music they chose to play was either a
recreation of early jazz small-group recordings (Louis Armstrong,
Jelly Roll Morton, Bix Beiderbecke) or imitations of the newest
bebop sounds from New York.
In less than a decade this fledgling activity had developed into
a large enough community to sustain itself and to provide the
platform for all the jazz activity which has followed in Europe.
Humphrey Lyttelton, more than any other musician,
established credibility for jazz in England. His aristocratic
background certainly helped his publicity but it was the
forthrightness of his music that attracted an ever-increasing
audience. His early band, moulded in the music’s traditions, was a
seminar in the evolving nature of the music. Its repertoire led from
King Oliver and Louis Armstrong to Sidney Bechet with sidelong
looks at Jelly Roll Morton and Kid Ory on the way.
Even in its embryonic beginnings the Lyttelton band
emphasized the blues structure, played original compositions and
developed its own conceptions of jazz standards. This process has
never stopped for Lyttelton. In the mid-1950s he created a schism among his
followers by pursuing his own musical instincts rather than remaining
stationary. The initial break came when he added the distinctive voice of alto
saxophonist Bruce Turner to the band while still maintaining much of the
traditional repertoire.
The change became permanent several years later when he reorganized
his band to reflect his altered desires as a musician. From the late 1950s he
has led a band that plays jazz in a style Stanley Dance described as
“mainstream.” The spiritual essence of the band’s music comes from Basie,
Ellington, Buck Clayton and Armstrong.
Humph, as he is affectionately called, has channeled his creativity into
many other associated areas during his long career. He was a professional
cartoonist for several years as well as contributing the story line to fellow
musician Wally Fawkes’s “Flook” cartoon. He is an astute observer of the jazz
scene and has written three autobiographical books, at least two volumes of
essays under the heading The Best In Jazz, contributed to The Melody
Maker, The Sunday Citizen and presented jazz programs on the BBC. Writing
restaurant reviews for Harpers and Queen magazine and contributing to
Punch have been other areas of activity. His hobbies of ornithology and
calligraphy occupy what little time is left.
In 1975 Humph bowed to the pressures of his “old” fans and began to
perform occasionally with some of his original sidemen. Only the framework
of the tunes remained traditional as the musicians reworked them into fresh
guises. Since then Humph has appeared as special guest artist with several
bands whose members are musical stepchildren of his earliest days. While
their viewpoint is something Humph has long transcended it doesn’t prevent
him from performing convincingly with them.
It was one of those occasions that brought the trumpeter to Canada for
the second time. The only other occasion had been in 1959 when his band
arrived by bus for a one-nighter at Massey Hall as part of an all-star package.
His 1983 visit was much different. He was the special guest attraction at
a local jazz festival. What was surprising for Humph was to find that most of
the bands he performed with were comprised of musicians who had, in some
kind of way, learned their craft by listening to Lyttelton and his
contemporaries...

MAKING PEOPLE’S MUSIC – MOE ASCH by Peter D. Goldsmith
(Smithsonian Press,$9.99 soft; $19.99 hard @ JRMart)
I haven’t done many book reviews for Rhythm & News but I
found this one too interesting to keep my mouth shut.
You probably already know that Moses “Moe” Asch was the
recording engineer, record exec. who founded famous Folkways
Records c.65 years ago. His Asch and Disc labels preceed
Folkways by more than 20 years. But the stories behind these
labels is engrossing.
During his tenure at Asch, Disc and Folkways Records,
he amassed a hefty catalogue of well over 2, 200 recordings.
These artists on these labels included folk singers like Pete
Seeger, Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly; jazz artists like Mary Lou
Williams, Art Tatum, John Kirby, Art Tatum, Jerry Jerome,
Coleman Hawkins; the first productions by Norman Granz
including Jazz At The Philharmonic, Nat Cole; Lennie Tristano,
Charlie Parker, etc. Then there was political talk and
contemporary poets like Langston Hughes.
Moe’s concept was that “every voice deserved to be heard”
and he built his career on finding those voices to record.
Many years ago I had the privilege to have a conversation
with Moe who told me some of his basic story about finding
shellac, severely rationed during WW2 while with Stinson
Records who, in the late 30’s), pressed a lot of records from
Russian Masters and had a big shellac ration. The book expands
on Moe’s story. He had pressed very few Asch Records prior to
the war. It’s hard today to believe that there wouldn’t be enough
sales of Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie or Leadbelly discs to give
him a decent shellac ration (10 or 20 percent of pre-war use)
Moe was adamant about releasing whatever he thought
ought to heard. And not just folk music! He even included
sound effects.
Moe also generously gave some of the shellac ration to Bob
Thiele’s Signature label—sparking its renewal. Thiele had
recorded Frank Melrose with Bud Jacobson before the war, did
great sessions with Hawkins, Tatum, etc and introduced the
world to Yank Lawson. After the war, Bob worked up a
distribution deal with a major company (General Electric?) and
added Anita O’Day and Liberace among many artists. Bob
(Thiele’s) name is familiar because of his later production for
Roulette, Impulse, as well as his Flying Dutchman and other
assorted labels.
An important jazz contact was American jazz music
impresario and producer, Norman Granz who had recorded one
the first concert album “Jazz at the Philharmonic” but was unable
to find a distribution outlet so Moe put it on Asch as part of his
jazz series. Of course, Granz later had Clef, Verve, and Pablo.
A large supporter of African American jazz artists was forgotten
producer Timme Rosenkrantz who brought Red Norvo, Errol
Garner and Lennie Tristano to Disc (Records).
The blues, were of course, represented by Leadbelly,
Brownie McGhee, Champion Jack Dupree. & Sonny Terry and an
extremely rare album by Lonnie Johnson in the 40’s and more
artists in the later years such s Memphis Slim, Big Joe Williams,
etc. as well as down home artists via Sam Charters.
Asch was instrumental in introducing the great art of David
Stone Martin’s illustrated album covers, which, for some reason,
disappeared from Moe’s Folkway’s series, probably because he
had to save packaging money. (Granz’s various labels and the
Progressive label later used many of David Stone Martin’s art.)
After the war, Moe had to leave his masters at Stinson and
started his own Disc label, and Granz held on to the rights of his
Jazz at The Philharmonic Volumes 2,3,4, Nat Cole, Slim Galliard
and other albums issued on Disc and they are probably in print
somewhere through Verve label’s issue.
There are many remarkable stories behind an equally
remarkable production of talent that Moe Ashe brought to light.
People like Fred Ramsey, Sam Charters, Leonard Feather, John
Lucas, Charles Edward Smith, Studs Terkel, Alan Lomax, just to
name a few.
You’ll find this book a fascinating look at a man who finished
his career with thousands of releases now the property of The
Smithsonian Institute, acquired before Moe’s death in 1986. In
true Moe Ashe fashion, he left this catalog with the proviso that
every recording will always remain always “available to the
public.”
(Another book about Moe Asch, World Of Sound by Richard
Carlin has many more photos and mentions the LP I watched Big
Joe Williams produce for Moe so Joe could buy better false
teeth, but this book has more history, details, etc.)

Anthony Braxton Trio and Duet
original liner notes for the newly reissued Sackville CD
No musician in jazz has enjoyed so complex a relationship with
the form and its history as Anthony Braxton. He has been celebrated
and vilified as the music’s figure of radical advance (and still is), while
regularly asserting his relationship with tradition by exploring repertoire both famous and forgotten.
Arriving in public around the crucial time of John Coltrane’s
death, Braxton’s position has never been simple. Rather than “fitting
in” to the energy-style avant-garde of the time, he created soundscapes that were sometimes dauntingly abstract. His solo saxophone
performances were often pointillist or minimalist in the extreme, working through simple motifs rather than building to the kind of orgiastic
crescendo, the characteristic mode of the jazz avant-garde.
Then, as now, Braxton was an artist who could find new paths
where others saw only dead ends. For many in the late ‘60s, the question was, could jazz advance at all? The death of John Coltrane had
left his immediate followers—Archie Shepp, Pharoah Sanders, Albert
Ayler—seeking solace in more traditional, often more commercially
viable forms. The jazz audience was simultaneously shrinking and
fragmenting—into fusion, traditional and avant-garde, and the avantgarde itself was also dividing into semi-exclusive camps of free jazz,
free improvisation and more composed music. In the midst of this
fragmentation, Anthony Braxton would advance on all fronts. His
quartet would advance the angular collective dynamics—genuinely
jazz—of Ornette Coleman’s great quartets; his composed music
would welcome the influence of European composers; he also
seemed right at home engaging in the free-flowing improvisation that
was already the hallmark of the British scene. For Braxton, every path
appeared open, each clearly rooted in the past and leading forward.
He is, in this, sense, progressivist and optimist.
At the same time, however, the progressive model of history
applied to jazz—the expansion of harmonic language paralleling the
harmonic movement of European music from Bach to Schoenberg—
prefers only one path. In a very real sense, the progressivist history of
jazz ends with the apocalyptic energy music of the mid-sixties—with
Albert Ayler and late Coltrane and with the arching tension curves in
the music of Cecil Taylor—in which all musical language is united with
the energy of the particle accelerator.
In his open practice of multiple forms, Braxton hints already at
the post-modern and post-historical, but he does not fit easily into the
conventional distinctions between modernist and post-modernist. He
is, in a sense, an artist suspended between these ideas, and also
between progressive notions of artistic forms and the post-historical.
He is, perhaps, too rational, too linear, for the post-historical, too loyal
to generations of previous artists for the post-modern. Post-modern
appropriation strategies are utterly unlike Braxton’s own trips into the
past, which he undertakes with more reverence than irony. He is a
very special figure in that he is both progressive and pluralist, his
vision enriched by the classicism of the Modern Jazz Quartet’s John
Lewis and the transcendent wail of Albert Ayler. In his trips into the
jazz past, he’s also broken down racial as well as stylistic walls, finding there was much to learn from Lennie Tristano, Warne Marsh, Lee
Konitz, Jimmy Giuffre and Dave Brubeck as well as Parker, Coltrane,
Coleman and Dolphy.
Even in CD format, this is a decidedly “two-sided” document, the
music seemingly chosen for maximum contrast. These are not, however, “two sides” of Anthony Braxton, as if he might ever have only two
modes—on/off, past/future. He has always been too diverse an artist
and too complex a thinker for that—rather, these are two very different facets of his work, perhaps close—in the terms of 1974—to the
poles of it. If Braxton’s characteristic mode in 1974 was the quartet—
8
rhythmically based, improvising thematically if freely on his compositions—the work here is both more “radical” and more “conservative.”
“Side One” is an extended trio composition that would, in
Braxton’s later ordering of things, become composition “No. 36.” It is
in Braxton’s more severe mode, without the steady rhythmic impetus
or “head” compositions of the quartet. It harkens back directly to The
Creative Construction Company the trio that also included Leo Smith,
along with violinist Leroy Jenkins as its third member, and their 1969
recording Silence. “No. 36” is Braxton in his special line from third
stream music—but if that movement initially suggested the orderly
baroque, Braxton’s classical music is the thorough-going serialism of
Boulez, the radical sonic play of Stockhausen, the chance music of
Cage. This is not, however, mere sonic exploration or abstract intellectual exercise. Braxton’s music is distinctly in the world, about our
emotions and the categories of experience. It is significant beyond
simply the integration of electronic music into a partially improvisatory context. The first sound we hear is a machine — Richard
Teitelbaum’s Moog synthesizer—breathing. In effect that’s a central
theme here, the relation of the human to the mechanical, the significance of breath, the index of the seriousness of this particular set of
musical relations. Braxton’s use of low-frequency reeds—the literally
profound—involves a physicality in the listening, the palpable vibration of time and space, where pitch turns into time. There are then
new forces at work in this music that retain their potency, not least the
acute sensitivity to contrasting patterns of harmonics between trumpet and clarinet in the “rhythmic unison” passages. The blurring of
composition and improvisation here is tribute to the level of interaction
that Braxton had begun to achieve with some select (and rare) partners.
The original “Side Two,” of course, is in some ways an utterly different proposition, a usually breezy trip through jazz standards
accompanied by the superb bass work of Dave Holland. Braxton had
already tried this with a conventional rhythm section of piano, bass
and drums— on In the Tradition, Volumes I and II—with decidedly
mixed results, apparently to the incomprehension or reluctance of his
partners. But Holland is an utterly different kind of musician, as open
to change as he is versed in the past. By 1974, he had been Braxton’s
most frequent and supportive partner since they began playing
together in the quartet Circle in Paris in 1959 with Chick Corea and
Barry Altschul.
The immediate antecedents of the duets here are those of Eric
Dolphy and Richard Davis recorded about a decade before, also on
standards—”Alone Together “and “Come Sunday”. But there’s nothing
directly derivative about the Braxton/Holland approach. While Dolphy
turned his pieces into suites of shifting approach and mood, Braxton
treats them much more conventionally, head statement leading directly to improvisation over Holland’s rhythmically assertive bass. These
performances swing magnificently, in the most traditional sense, and
they also demonstrate just how well Braxton could work in what is in
some ways a genuine bop context, with direct nods to the Tristano-ite
saxophonists Konitz and Marsh. By this stage, Braxton is almost reenacting the evolution of free jazz, with the gradual loosening of harmonic connection (note the use of tremolo to ambiguate tonal centres), but it’s his movement in and out of the harmonic language of
bop that’s most remarkable. It’s accomplished with a freedom that
unites the streams of influence coming from Dolphy and Marsh.
As with the two sides of the original LP, Braxton invites us to
enjoy the genuine multiplicity of our position in time, giving us two different musical worlds each created with partners of the first rank.
- Stuart Broomer
Wild Bill Davison & The Jazz Giants
liner notes from the newly reissued Sackville CD
Great changes took place in the 1960s permanently affecting the
social fabric of North America. For the most part, these changes were
for the better, but one of the casualties of the times was the jazz club
circuit. Most major cities in Canada and the U.S. supported at least one
full time club collectively providing a number of circuits within which
permanently organized bands could work on a regular basis.
One of these was Toronto’s Colonial Tavern. It regularly played host
to bands led by Earl Hines, Buck Clayton, Rahsaan Roland Kirk,
Cannonball Adderley and others too numerous to mention here. Every
so often the club’s management, with the help of its New York booking
agent, would put together a group of musicians who didn’t work together
on a regular basis.
One of these occasions was in March 1968. The nominal leader of
the band was cornetist Wild Bill Davison but the musical direction came
from Claude Hopkins a pianist who had also been a bandleader for
many years. It was billed as THE JAZZ GIANTS and the other musicians
certainly fell into that category. Clarinetist Herb Hall had been a
mainstay of Eddie Condon’s house band for a number of years following
a lengthy stint in Europe with Sammy Price’s band. Trombonist Benny
Morton’s career stretched back to his days with Fletcher Henderson in
the 1920s where he helped establish the identity of the trombone as a
jazz instrument. Bassist Arvell Shaw had enjoyed more than twenty
years of performances with the Louis Armstrong organization while
Buzzy Drootin was the kind of drummer who had quietly underpinned
many an important session.
From the beginning everything fell into place. Despite the great
individuality of each musician it quickly established an ensemble texture
of its own. While Wild Bill Davison’s lead cornet is unmistakable in any
situation the settings provided by the other musicians were a little
different. What caught the fancy of listeners immediately was the
intensity and drive of the band. The musicians, themselves, quickly
realized that something special was developing on the stand and as the
engagement unfolded this feeling was intensified.
The time was ripe for a recording of the band but there were no
record companies interested in such an idea in Canada. Both Buck
Clayton and the Saints and Sinners had been recorded by groups of
interested business people. So it seemed logical that something similar
could take place again.
Many people thought it a great idea but only a handful had the
necessary funds to make it a reality. After several days of intense
negotiation we managed to put together a group of people committed to
the idea. No one was thinking much beyond actually recording the band
at that point. The musicians were in agreement so the project could take
place.
The recordings were made over two nights following the evening gig
at the Colonial. Recording studios were few in those days and our
previous experience with Phil Sheridan at the Saints and Sinners
session convinced us that he was the man to handle the critically
important job of recording engineer. His background as a musician was
particularly valuable and left us free to concentrate on the musical
production. Actually, there was little to do. The band simply set up in the
studio, enjoyed a late night snack and got down to business. It took a
while for everyone to get comfortable. Hallmark Studios was located in
a large warehouse building that could have housed a couple of
symphony orchestras. The control room was perched high in the sky and
was approached via a long stairway. The acoustics were good but the
intimacy of the bandstand was missing.
Two long nights of music making finally captured enough material to
complete the Ip that became the first release of Sackville Recordings.
No one could have anticipated, at the time, that this production would be
the catalyst in the creation of many more projects over the succeeding
years.
As Arvell Shaw noted enthusiastically at the time of the session “this
band’s music gives me the same feeling I had when recording the Louis
Armstrong Handy album and the Brussels Fair concert with Sidney
Bechet”.
