Clackamas Community College 19600 Molalla Avenue, Oregon City OR 97045 3 About Clackamas Cross Country With few returners from the previous year, the Cougars had a lot of questions coming into the fall season. With a somewhat up and down fall, the cougars found success at the NWAC Championship where the men captured 3rd place as the women finished 5th. Devin Sellers earned AllAmerican status with a 3rd place finish in the mens race. Jocelyn Barber led the women with a 14th place finish at the same meet. Other highlights throughout the year consisted of the men being runner-up at the Southern region meet - losing the race by a mere point. The cougars had four men in the top ten. The women finished 3rd with great efforts from Angel Ardito and Kennedy Rufener. The Clackamas women improved substantially throughout the season as they went from last at the NWAC preview meet to being 5th at the NWAC championship nearly a month later. The consistent progression from Ardito, Kayla McNeeley and Rufener were key. Headed into the spring, the Cougar distance squad is looking to improve on the success from the fall. On the mens side Glapougbae Garmondeh, Weyekin Bill, Alan Ekanger Pake Benthin and Jackson Baker will look to be scoring points in the longer races as Glapoujay Garmondeh, Danny Robertson and Al Lacey will make up the middle distance contingent. The women’s group looks to be more diverse than the men and only time will tell which event will suit each athlete the best. That said, Barber, McNeeley and Ardito will most likely look to be scoring points in the longer races as Becky Ponnay and Rufener will provide the cougars with a great 1-2 punch in the middle distance events. Sara Cass is a new addition to the squad. She previously competed for Sandy High School. Like this past fall, there are questions to be answered. Many new faces and high expectations. Only Robertson (8th in the 800, 6th in the 1500), Ekanger (2nd place in 2014 steeplechase) Rufener (5th place in 2014 steeplechase) and Benthin (2nd in the 5k) have NWAC championship experience. The current squad will look to continue the strong long distance tradition of the past. 4 About Clackamas Track & Field The 2014 track and field season had many highlights. The women and men placed third at the NWAC Championships. The Cougars broke four outdoor school records, had twenty-seven outdoor top ten alltime performances, five NWAC Champions and twenty-one All-Americans. There were also two 13’ 1” Pole Vault indoor school records broken along with nine indoor top five performances. The women’s team was one of the most talented to come through Clackamas. The jumps crew was 5’ 7” High Jump 17’ 9” Long Jump arguably the best in the country with women that triple jumped 38’ 4905 Heptathlon 4”, 37’ 3”, 37’ 1”, 36’ 1”, and 35’ 4”. They also produced individual top marks of 19’ 4”, 17’ 11”, 17’ 10”, 17’ 6”, and 16’ 4” in the long jump. The pole vaulters went 13’ 1 ½”, 10’, and 9’ 6”. The top high jumper went 5’ 7 ¼”. Elizabeth Venzon’s school record performance in the heptathlon was also the second best heptathon score ever at the NWAC Championships with 4905 points, which would have placed her eighth at the Pac-12 Championships. The throwers put up some notable marks in the javelin with Josie Elsenbaumer throwing 143’ 11”, and Tianna Ybarra throwing 133’ 2”. Sasha Gonzalez ran 18:31 in the 5k, which was a minute faster than what she ran the previous year in high school cross country. Tiffany Richeson was not only the top rated junior 17’ 6” Long Jump 37’ 3” Triple Jump college pole vaulter last year but set a new school record in the 100 hurdles with a time of 14.79. Coaching Philosophy Mass Customization The training at Clackamas has a general training idea but gets tweaked depending upon the individual needs of the athletes. This allows the athletes to be able to train in competitive training groups but also get the individual attention each athletes needs to address strengths and weaknesses. Team Oriented Track and field and cross country are team sports. The program looks for athletes that understand athletes reach their potential by training with others with the intent of helping themselves and others around them get better. This cyclical idea of help others get better so each athlete gets better creates an environment with a high level of team cohesion. Develop Marketable Student-Athletes It is the program’s goal to make Clackamas student-athletes highly desirable to the four-year institutions. This is done by increasing their academic record, athletic performances and character. Clackamas looks to have a reputation that high school athletes and four-year college coaches want to be connected to. After finishing 9th in the 2012 Olympic Games, Alumni Becky Holliday made her third Team USA in 2014. Here she is competing in the 2013 IAAF World Championships in Moscow. Hannah Waite, who is a state champion, along with equally talented Natalie Leckey, look to add to the depth of the hurdles crew. Elana Hampton is bringing her hurdle talent to the table for the Cougars as well. Gifty and Godlyne Ulinwa will add depth to the sprint squad and have a lot of potential for improvement. Distance – Kennedy Rufener returns for the Cougars after coming off last season with a thirty-six second improvement in the 800 from high school. She also was a fifth place finisher in the steeplechase and ran very solid for the Cougars during the cross country season. Jocelyn Barber was the top runner all season for Clackamas where she ran 19:00 for 5,000 meters. She will be important for covering the long distances. Angel Ardito is still very new to the sport of distance running and looks to be integral in covering the distance events. Jumps – Emma Hill is the top returning triple and long jumper in the conference and is in fine form early. Elana Hampton will be important for hepathlon points and will be working to score points in the pole vault as well. Desiray Robinson will be the top high jumper for Clackamas. Ericka Pengelly will be a vital part to the team with her well-rounded athleticism and should be instrumental in the heptathlon, sprints and hurdles. Throws - Tianna Ybarra and Rachel McKinnis return after a freshman campaign that saw them finish as the #1 and #3 freshman hammer throwers in the conference. Ybarra will lead a strong javelin squad with the return of red shirt Courtney Pardee. Freshman McKenzie Hidalgo (131’ 7”) will lead the way in the discus, while McKinnis looks to be a force in the shot put. Clackamas Community College Academic Services Clackamas CC works hard to develop strong academic support for student athletes. We have an academic advisor dedicated to the athletics program, P.J. Martineau (pictured). P.J. assists with class selection, graduation plans, transcripts, NCAA eligibility, and transferring. As a former intercollegiate basketball player she understands the life, struggles, and goals of the studentathlete. Feel free to contact PJ with any academic concerns. Athletic Academic Advisor PJ Martineau pj@clackamas.edu 503-594-3180 Clackamas also offers free tutoring in our Tutorial Center and in our Math Tutoring Center. The Athletics program does attendance and grade checks on all athletes each term. We also send check-up emails to all instructors of track and field athletes. The Track & Field team implements weekly study planners and study halls for the athletes we find struggling academically. 21 Cougar Outstanding Alumni Brian Abshire US Olympic Trials Champion in steeple chase, 1988 (8:23.64) Olympic competitor, 1988 9th fastest steeple chase time in US history (8:20.83) 24th fastest 2 mile on U.S. soil (8:23.10) 8th fastest 2 mile by an American (2.7 seconds behind Steve Prefontaine) Personal record of 7:41.75 for indoor 3000 m.
