4.0 Ma te r i a l c h a ra c te r i s t i c s
A wide range of thermoplastic materials is used for the conveyor components. In order to provide
a better understanding of these materials the main properties of the majority of these used
materials will be discussed shortly.
Besides this selection of materials, other thermoplastic materials and colours might be of interest
for special applications. In these cases, please contact KIK Kunststoffen Industrie BV for their
expertise and advice.
4.1 Polypropylene
Polypropylene (PP) is widely used in an array of applications up to 80 ºC for its combination of
moderate cost, superb chemical resistance, low weight and good overall mechanical performance.
PP homopolymers have a glass transition temperature of –10 ºC, and suffer from embrittlement
at temperatures below 0 ºC. Copolymers, as mainly used for the conveyor components, have an
improved impact strength down to –15 to –35 ºC, at the expense of lower stiffness and thermal
performance.
PP has an extremely low moisture absorption of less than 0.1%at saturation. This coupled with its
excellent hydrolysis resistance makes it the material of choice for many applications.
PP has an outstanding resistance against a broad range of chemicals, including acids, alcohols,
hot water and most detergents. It shows moderate resistance against aromatic or halogenated
hydrocarbons. Its UV resistance is limited.
In case of applications in which an electric charge and discharge can cause problems, KIK uses
anti-static PP compounds based on special conductive carbon black for a variety of components.
Due to the addition of conductive carbon black these materials will have a lower impact strength.
33
In case of applications in which extra flexibility is required, KIK uses a specially tailor made
PP material, PPK. This material combines low flexibility with outstanding impact strength.
A summary of the key properties of PP:
■
Semi-crystalline structure with a glass transition temperature of –15 ºC and a melting point
of 155 ºC (co-polymers)
■
Excellent chemical resistance
■
Excellent hydrolysis resistance
■
Low density
■
Extremely low moisture absorption
■
Sound damping
■
Limited UV resistance
4.2 Polyoxymethylene
Polyoxymethylene (POM) is one of the most widely used semi-crystalline engineering
thermoplastics because of its unique combination of rigidity, toughness and dimensional stability.
As a result of its regular molecular structure, it reaches a crystallinity of 80%, higher than most
other thermoplastics. POM is available both as a homo-polymer and as a copolymer. The homopolymer has higher crystallinity, giving better wear properties, somewhat higher stiffness and
hardness, while the copolymer has a higher ductility and is slightly easier to process.
POM has the lowest wear of almost all thermoplastics at room temperature. This coupled with
remarkable dimensional stability, makes POM the material of choice for slides, gears and bearings.
POM can be used for extended periods at temperatures up to 90-100 ºC. Temperatures up to
150 ºC can be allowed for short periods; prolonged exposure to temperatures over 100 ºC causes
rapid oxidative degradation of the polymer.
POM picks up significantly less moisture than polyamides: about 0.2% at 23 ºC / 50% RH and 0.8%
at saturation. This means that part size is largely independent of humidity.
POM is chemically resistant to alkalis, aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, oils, greases, petrol
34
and most detergents. It is not resistant to strong acids and oxidising media.
POM is not UV resistant, and outdoor applications are only possible with grades stabilised
with active carbon black, as used for most of the conveyor components.
Compared to most other thermoplastics, POM has an unsatisfactory flame retardancy.
Flame retardant grades are not available in the market place.
A summary of the key properties of POM:
■
Semi-crystalline structure with a glass transition temperature of –60 ºC and a crystalline
melting point of 165 ºC (homo-polymer 175 ºC)
■
High stiffness, strength and hardness
■
Excellent impact strength down to –40 ºC
■
Excellent fatigue strength
■
Low moisture absorption
■
Outstanding tribological properties
■
Superior chemical resistance to solvents
4.3 Polyamid 6
Polyamid 6 (PA6) is one of the most widely used engineering plastics, as it offers a combination
of excellent processing and good overall mechanical and thermal performance. It is has a higher
impact strength than polyamide 6.6 (PA6.6), at the expense of a lower modulus and a higher
moisture absorption.
Depending on the load, PA6 can be used at temperatures up to 110 ºC for prolonged periods.
The material is resistant to short exposures up to temperatures of 180 to 200 ºC. PA6 picks
up about 3% of moisture at 23 ºC / 50% RH and 9.5% at saturation in water. This can lead to
dimensional changes of the component after moulding. The moisture acts as a plasticizer,
dropping the glass transition temperature from 50 ºC to approximately 0 ºC at equilibrium,
increasing the impact strength whilst significantly reducing the modulus and strength of the
material.
35
PA6 has excellent resistance to oils, greases, aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, as well as to
most halogenated hydrocarbons. It is not resistant to acids and alkalis. The UV stability of PA6
is better than that of most other engineering polymers. Carbon black modified grades show a
further improvement of the UV stability.
A summary of the key properties of PA6:
■
Semi-crystalline structure with a glass transition temperature of 50 ºC (dry as moulded,
0 ºC conditioned) and a melting point of 225 ºC
■
Outstanding impact strength
■
Good mechanical properties up to 100-120 ºC
■
Excellent chemical resistance against oils, greases and most solvents, not resistant to
■
strong acids and alkalis
Relatively high moisture absorption
4.4 Polyamid 6.6
Polyamid 6.6 has got similar properties than PA6, however, due to its molecular structure its
absorbs less moisture and has got a higher melting point of approximately 260 ºC. This results
in a material with slightly better thermal properties, lower impact strength, higher strength and
modulus.
Its excellent mechanical properties and outstanding resistance to abrasion and chemical attack
makes it one of the most widely used engineering thermoplastics. In case enhanced impact
properties are needed, KIK makes use of impact modified PA6.6 compounds.
PA6.6 picks up about 2.5% of moisture at 23 ºC / 50% RH and 8.5% at saturation in water. PA6.6 has
outstanding resistance to oils, greases and most detergents. It is not resistant to acids and alkalis.
36
A summary of the key properties of PA6.6:
■
Semi-crystalline structure with a glass transition temperature of 50 ºC (dry as moulded,
20 ºC conditioned) and a melting point of 260 ºC
■
Good mechanical properties up to 120-140 ºC
■
Excellent chemical resistance against oils, greases and most solvents, limited chemical
■
resistance against strong acids and alkalis
Moisture absorption 2.5% at 23 ºC / 50% RH and 8.5% at saturation in water
4.5 Polycarbonate
Polycarbonate (PC) is an amorphous engineering plastic with a glass transition temperature of
150 ºC. In its natural form, it offers an unique combination of stiffness, hardness and toughness up
to a temperature of 135 ºC to 140 ºC, in combination with an excellent dimensional stability.
The mechanical properties of any thermoplastic deteriorate when it is exposed to elevated
temperatures. Compared to most engineering thermoplastics, PC has superior resistance to
thermal ageing which is illustrated by its continuous use temperature which goes up to 125 ºC.
Short term exposure is in principal limited by its glass transition temperature and should therefore
not exceed 135-140 ºC.
PC only picks up about 0.15% of moisture at 23 ºC / 50% RH and 0.35% at saturation in water at
23 ºC. However, PC should not be used in humid environments if the temperature exceeds
70 ºC, because hydrolysis will cause a significant drop in mechanical properties, especially impact
strength.
The chemical resistance of PC is limited and certain chemicals cause environmental stress cracking
or will dissolve the polymer. PC is not resistant to aromatic hydrocarbons, phenols, ketones,
ethers, petrol, alkalis and most oxidising and acids. Furthermore it is moderately resistant to (hot)
water and salt solutions, whilst the resistance to alcohols is good.
PC has reasonable UV stability; for improved performance UV stabilised grades should be used.
37
A summary of the key properties of PC:
■
Amorphous structure with a continuous use temperature up to 125 ºC
■
High stiffness, hardness and toughness over a broad temperature range (-40ºC to 135ºC)
■
Outstanding transparency and gloss in its natural form
■
Very good dimensional stability
■
Limited chemical resistance; particularly sensitive to stress cracking and hydrolysis

4.6 Polyurethane
Thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU) are a group of elastomeric (flexible) block copolymers based
on urethane and ester or ether segments. Depending on the chemical structure of the copolymer
the hardness can roughly vary from 60 shore A to 74 shore D. Typical hardness as used for the
conveyor components is 95 shore A.
Its flexibility, also at low temperatures, outstanding abrasion resistance, excellent UV resistance
and tear strength make TPU a material of choice for conveyor components. TPU can be used up to
a temperature of 110 ºC for short period of time, however, the temperature should not exceed 80
ºC for prolonged periods.
TPU picks up 0.2% moisture at saturation in water at 23 ºC and about 1.3% of moisture at 23
ºC / 50% RH. In general this moisture pick up does not effect the mechanical properties and
dimensional stability.
TPU is resistant to oils, aliphatic hydrocarbons, and petrol that does not contain alcohols.
Unleaded petrol can cause a degree of swelling of the TPU as a result of the aromatic components
of the fuel. TPU is not resistant to concentrated acids and alkalis, chlorinated and aromatic
hydrocarbons, alcohols and hot water. TPU has excellent UV resistance.

A summary of the key properties of TPU:
■
Elastomeric like material with a semi-crystalline structure. The glass transition temperature
and melting point depend on the specific copolymer
■
Exceptional flexibility, even at low temperatures
■
Outstanding impact strength at low temperatures
■
High shear strength
■
Excellent resistance to abrasive wear
■
High elastic recovery, even after high strain levels and long term loads
■
High damping
■
Chemically resistant to oils, greases and aliphatic hydrocarbons, not resistant to concentrated
acids, aromatic and chlorinated hydrocarbons, alcohol and hot water
