DHCN Meeting Minutes from 03/18/15 @ Leisure Fitness, 231 Executive Drive Suite 15 Newark DE John Callahan welcomed everyone to our first meeting in 2015 (as our January meeting was cancelled due to weather). John gave a synopsis of DHCN’s mission: Promote and educate members and the community on our members’ products and services. DHCN now has over 200 members! Janice Taylor reminded everyone that the Calendar of Events and Membership List are updated & available online. Reminded members to send anything/everything they have going on so that all members are aware & can share; it is a free marketing & promotional opportunity for everyone. Paul Bastianelli, CEO of Leisure Fitness, welcomed everyone and told DHCN members that if we ever need a meeting space, and Leisure Fitness’ meeting room is available, we are welcome to use it! Kathy Norris @ Anytime Fitness – Bear & Newark locations; 24 hour facility with personal trainers available. Free one week trial pass is available. Audrey Griffith @ Health Coaches DE ‐ Lifestyle coaches who can help clients learn about nutrition, movement, reading food labels, etc. Michael Comegys @ Comfort Keepers – Provides assistance to 18+yo with ADL, housekeeping, shopping, transportation, etc. Adam Samuel @ Avenue Medical in Dover ‐ Provides health, wellness and medical products, accessibility products for the home (inside/out), rehab equipment. They also offer home assessments and budget suggestions. They are Medicaid eligible to assist with LTC services including home modifications. Linda Popper @ Blood Bank of Delmarva ‐ BBD is asking for people to Pledge to Be a Hero and Sponsor a Hero Blood Drive! (Businesses and organizations can help recruit blood donors by encouraging their employees, friends, families, to pledge to be heroes. The summer drive is approaching; May through September. Donors are eligible/entered to win $100/wk; one lucky winner will be selected for $2500 grand prize! Linda highlighted the 04/11/15 UD Star Campus Health Fair in Newark; she encouraged everyone to attend, as it’s FREE for the public, but you must pre‐register online (they expect over 2,000 people). There’ll be health screenings and cooking demos. There will be approx. 70 DHCN members present; however, there are no more exhibitor/vendor tables avail. Wendy Gross @ Angel Companions – provides nonmedical services 24/7 in NCC & KC. New location across from CCHS in Newark; grand opening event next week. Dawn Nilsen @ DE Elder Law Center – provides free initial consultation to assist with estate planning, LTC waiver assistance, etc. Presentation on 04/20/15 @ 7pm @ Spring Harbor Community Ctr. Larry Wendel @ Complete Accident Relief – provides examination, documentation, imaging, chiropractic, PT, non‐narcotic pain management, sports therapy in NCC. Ford Waggoner @ Easter Seals – Camp Fairlee Manor provides services for people ages 6‐100; and can be a time of respite for caregivers. The camp is under reconstruction with new cabins, a dining hall & gymnasium thanks to a $6 million grant and $2 million in assets. Ford volunteered to host the July 15 DHCN meeting at this location! Barry Gomer @ First State Health and Wellness – provides acupuncture services. Linda Hynson @ Diamond State Surgical Associates – provides services in Middletown Paul Keely @ King Medical – highlighted DE has 40 Rotary organizations statewide & Delmarva region, and they all need speakers! Janice asked Paul to provide DHCN with a list of rotary contacts for members to reach out to. Paul also noted 250 rotary members are volunteering with Easter seals this coming Spring @ Camp Fairlee Manor. YMCA – Healthy living program, statewide. YMCA offers a 6 week diabetes prevention program. The curriculum is CDC approved. There is no cost to Medicare/Medicaid clients. The program can be hosted onsite. Rori Anders @ CNMRI in Milford & Dover – provides neurologists, physiatrists, MRIs, sleep disorder studies, pediatric neurologists, offering same day appointments. DOCF hold various fundraisers: Bracelets and scarves (which members can help to sell if they’d like), and 5k’s. In fact, there’s a 5k Fundraiser Run/Walk @ the Riverfront on 05/03/15; sponsorship, mile markers, exhibitor tables are available! Expected attendance is ~850 people. Funds raised go to research/grants to help find a test and cure for ovarian cancer. Dan Young @ Military One Source – Offering resources, referrals, consultations and counseling services on the issues that concern military families (in cooperation with the Dept of Defense). DVI provides IEPS in schools, assessments for independent living and technology, training, vocational rehabilitation, and they sell promotional products which benefit the employees who are visually impaired. Jennifer Wheeler @ Pro2 Respiratory/The Promptcare Companies – Provides home life support. Rekha Bhandarkar @ Health with Wisdom – provides natural therapies. She believes in education first. 30 minute consultation available. She is looking for collaborative partnerships with physicians & health care providers, and speaking engagements. Anne Stephenson @ Leisure Fitness – offers FREE Health Seminars, personal trainers, and they sell home & commercial fitness equipment, as well as billiards and gaming equipment (pool tables, putting greens, shuffleboard, etc.) too! DCSE’s wait time on our customer service line is approx. 30 min; customers are beginning to utilize Facebook to reach us now too. John Callahan @ Halpern Eye Care which is a 69 year old practice offering eye exams, retinal scans, eye glasses, sunglasses. They have 10 locations in DE and another 6 offices in MD. Halpern offers a special discount plan for those without vision coverage. Matthew Baxter @ SSA – presented information on My Social Security online services. Matt encouraged everyone to create an account and reminded those who have an account that they must log in to change their passwords 2 times a year. For those who are still working, he recommended logging on in late spring, early summer to view your yearly earnings statement. And for those who no longer working, this would provide them with proof of income statement after retirement. Establishing a SSA personal account also enables users to change their address/telephone/email, view/change their Direct Deposit information, view earnings and statements, file for retirement, Medicare part D, disability and spousal benefits, utilize the Benefit Calculator and Benefit Estimate Screening Tool (BEST), and request a replacement Medicare card. Users can also create “what if” scenarios, to plan for and prepare for their retirement. At this time, users cannot request a replacement SS card; to do that, they must come in to the office. Note: Offices are understaffed and the 1‐800 line wait time is approx. ~30 min. TOUR: Some DHCN members joined Anne Stephenson on a tour of the facility after the meeting.
