GUIDED TOURS
SIR DDINBYCH / DENBIGHSHIRE
Nantclwyd y Dre
Ruthin Gaol
Take a trip through the seven ages of Nantclwyd
y Dre, Wales’s oldest dated timbered town
house. The house was started in 1435 and has
been added to, updated and upgraded throughout
the centuries. Nantclwyd y Dre has been
beautifully restored to demonstrate the changing
fashions and the lives of its residents. Visitors can
observe a colony of Lesser Horseshoe bats in
the attic rooms via ‘bat cam’, participate in a quiz
and use interactive media screens to learn more
about the house and its inhabitants.
Ruthin gaol is the only purpose-built Pentonville
style prison open to the public as a heritage
attraction. People can spend time exploring its
nooks and crannies and learn about life in the
Victorian prison system. See how the prisoners
lived their daily lives: what they ate, how they
worked, and the punishments they suffered.
Explore the cells including the punishment, ‘dark’
and condemned cell. Find out about the Welsh
Houdini and William Hughes who was the last
man to be hanged there.

Denbigh Castle
The striking ruins of Denbigh Castle, crowning a steep hill above the town, enjoy commanding views
of the pastoral Vale of Clwyd and the round-backed hills of the Clwydian range. Denbigh, built as part
of Edward I’s 13th century campaigns against the Welsh, was constructed by Henry de Lacy, one of
the king’s chief commanders. It was by no means the first stronghold to occupy this self-evidently
strategic site: as if to emphasize English dominance, the castle was built over the stronghold of Dafydd
ap Gruffudd, the Welsh leader crushed by Edward in 1282. The building of the ‘new’ Denbigh from 1282
onwards (which removed all traces of the Welsh fortifications) created not only a castle but a new English
borough protected by town walls. The building in two phases, was interrupted by a rising in 1294 during
which the castle was held for a time by the Welsh. The latter work is easily recognisable by the different
coloured stone, thicker curtain walls and angular towers resembling those at Caernarfon. The castle’s
finest feature is its striking triple-towered Great Gatehouse bearing the unmistakable stamp of Master
James of St George, the architectural genius responsible for all of Edward’s major North Wales castles.
Also of great interest are the town walls, almost two-thirds of a mile long. The eastern section, defended
by the Countess Tower and Goblin Tower, is particularly fine.
Price: Admission Charge Adults £3.50, Reduced rate £2.65 / Family Ticket £10.50
(admits 2 adults and up to 3 children under 16 years) / Three or seven day explorer
passes are available to give you free admission to the historic sites in the care of Cadw

A celebration of the Carpenters
music and the spirit of Karen
Carpenter. One of the most
fascinating but ultimately tragic
stories in popular music history
was the life of Karen Carpenter.
In fact tragic is not a big enough
word to describe the terrible
sadness and waste of her
short life. She died at the age
of just 32 years. Karen was the
voice of the multi-hit making
group The Carpenters, who
along with her brother Richard,
scored an unprecedented 17
consecutive billboard US top
ten hits. The timeless quality of
the Carpenters music makes it
as relevant today as when they
scored their first UK hit with

FAUST by Gounod - Swansea
City Opera - 10th Anniversary
tour! We are delighted to
welcome back the critically
acclaimed Swansea City Opera,
with their 10th Anniversary
Tour of Faust by Gounod. Sung
in English, this dark Gothic
tale follows the fortunes of
Faust, who weary of life, is
contemplating suicide when
he encounters Méphistophélès
(the Devil). Faust agrees to
exchange his soul for eternal
youth and the fulfilment of his
hedonistic wishes. The resulting
journey balances romance
and temptation; and is widely
regarded as a magical and
tuneful masterpiece, based
on Goethe’s dramatic poem
Faust, one of the great works
of European Literature.This
production is set in the Victorian
Gothic era and accompanied
by chamber orchestra. Faust
contains many well-known
musical highlights including
The Jewel Song and the Soldiers
Chorus which will be performed
by some of the finest singers
and orchestral players in
the country.

come see! The world’s strongest band perform
incredible feats live! Marvel as Madness lift an
enormous set of polished pop songs high in the
air, single handed! The UK’s biggest open air tour
ever!” Madness will be performing inimitable
quirky pop classics such as “House of Fun”,
