April 16 – Dodson Council
Meeting, 8:30 – 9:30 a.m.
Learning Fair, May 14th, is an open house, family night at Dodson. Fun activities are being planned
and classrooms will be open so families can come see what their students have been working on.
First Place Winner to be Recognized at the State Capitol
Dodson fourth grader Olivia Schuck, a student in Kris McLaughlin's
classroom, won first place in the Michigan Committee for Severe
Weather Awareness 2015 poster contest! She was the top entry from
more than 300 posters submitted by 4th and 5th grade students from
across the state.
Olivia, her parents and Ms. McLaughlin are all invited to a special
awards ceremony held on April 14 in the State Capitol building’s
rotunda. After the ceremony, she will also receive a special tour of the
state's Emergency Operations Center, followed by lunch at the Michigan State Police Emergency
Management and Homeland Security Division.
Congratulations and nice work, Olivia!
Square
Art and Special Tile Installation
Your child should have brought home a packet from Square 1 Art this week. The original artwork
on the front cover was created by your child in art class! The items listed in the packet are available
for sale with your child’s artwork on it. Orders are being accepted until March 30th. Just go to
www.square1art.com/shop and use the information listed on the order form to access your student’s
art.
The last item on the order form is “School Tile”. Families have an opportunity to order a tile, with
their child’s artwork, for the school. These tiles will then be a part of a special installation in the
hallways of Dodson. You may have seen something similar at other schools in the district. It’s a
great way to show Dodson pride.
Thank You!
Fun was had by all at our Zap Zone Family Night on March 15th. A special thank you to both
Yasmeen Jasey for organizing the night and to the Ismail Family and Zap Zone for hosting Dodson
families.
Popcorn for Sale
Popcorn will be for sale again on Friday, April 17. Each bag costs 50 cents a bag (limit
of 4 bags per student). Funds from this month’s sales will go to the Fifth Grade Classrooms!!!
5th Grade parents, if you are available to help, please contact dodsonsnackdays@gmail.com.
Planning for 2015-2016. We Need Your Help!
With this school year winding down, Dodson Council is looking ahead to plans for next year. We
have a small but dedicated group of parents who organize many of the events hosted by Council.
However, several are “graduating” from Dodson and therefore several events need coordinators for
the next school year and beyond. Some are even great for working parents! Without additional
volunteers, some activities may not be able to continue, so please consider helping. Outgoing
coordinators have done a great job of compiling the responsibilities for each position and are willing
to work with new coordinators to make the transition smooth.
A few of the open positions include:
Spirit Wear: taking orders for Dodson Spirit Wear, submitting them to our vendor and then
delivering completed items to the school.
Holiday Shop: students have a great time shopping for holiday gifts for family and friends. This is
scheduled during the school days for the week of December 7, 2015.
Little Caesar’s: work with Little Caesar’s to set dates for the fundraiser, take orders and complete
delivery to the school.
Field Day Co-Coordinator: Field Day is a big and fun undertaking and works best with two
coordinators. We are in need of a second.
Fantastic First Graders - Wings of Wonder
Congratulations to Mrs. Sparks' first grade class! They won a contest sponsored by the
Friends of the Library to name the Canton Public Library’s new butterfly garden. Shae
Young suggested the name "Wings of Wonder" and it was submitted as the class entry.
The class has won a pizza party! Look for the butterfly garden coming later this spring.
Lost and Found Cleanup
Now that the winter weather is (hopefully) behind us, all of the cold weather items in the Dodson
lost and found need to go back home. Any items remaining the morning of April 3, will be donated
to the PCCS Clothing Bank.
