April 2015 Duxbury Doings

Duxbury Doings
April 2015
Greetings from the Director—
A Nationally Accredited
Senior Center
The other night I went to a fundraising event and the guest
speaker talked about the importance of volunteerism. He
said, “All things are possible with the help of
volunteers.” I couldn’t agree more!
This month, we will celebrate, honor and thank the 247
volunteers who are the key to our success. Our volunteers:
 Deliver meals, bake treats, serve lunch, pick up and
deliver baked goods to the senior center and shop for
groceries
 Answer telephones, perform clerical work, collate
mailings, greet our guests
 Teach classes/serve as guest speakers or lead one of
our many groups and game activities
 Provide medical transportation—locally and to Boston
 Organize fundraising and cultural events
 Make our facility beautiful inside and out
 Serve as a member of the COA or Friends Board or
member of the Accreditation Committee
 Provide a caring hand in the social day program
 Plan, implement or teach courses offered through the
life long learning program
 Prepare income tax documentation
 Assist with shopping
 Provide custodial/maintenance support
 Serve as SHINE counselors
 Provide professional help and guidance
 Work with the members of our social day program
 Share time as a community helper

Veterans’ News
April, 2015
Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) grants from the Department of Veterans Affairs can help
Veterans with certain permanent and total service-connected disabilities live more
independently and barrier-free in their own homes. Grants up to $67,555 are awarded to
eligible disabled Veterans to help build or modify homes to best suit their needs.
The grant can be used on new construction, remodel an existing home, or apply toward a
mortgage of an already modified home owned by the Veteran that did not use the VA grant
assistance.
Modifications that can be done with the SAH grant money include, bathrooms, kitchens,
bedrooms, covered porches, ramps and walkways, doors, windows, walkways, and security
items.
The VA determines eligibility for SAH grants based on permanent and service-connected
disabilities such as; loss of both arms or both legs, blindness in both eyes, severe burn injuries,
severe respiratory injuries and ALS. Military personnel are 60% more likely than the general
public to get ALS.
To learn more contact the VA at 800-218-0084 or visit www.va.gov and enter SAH grants in the
search window.
If you have questions about your military and/or Veterans benefits, contact Mike Thorp, the
Veterans’ Service Officer for Duxbury, located at the Senior Center, 781-934-5774 X108.

Did You Hear? Big Movie Moment for the Deaf and
Hard of Hearing!
Regal Cinemas in Kingston has closedcaptioning glasses. The captions are projected
onto the glasses and appear to float about 10 feet in front of the
user. They also come with audio tracks that describe the action
on the screen for blind people, or they can boost the audio levels
of the movie for those who are hard of hearing.
There are a limited number of closed-captioning glasses so call
in advance to reserve a set and enjoy the movie!
Call Carol ext. 104 to register for these
