Grants up to $67,555 are awarded to eligible disabled Veterans to help build or modify homes to best suit their needs. The grant can be used on new construction, remodel an existing home, or apply toward a mortgage of an already modified home owned by the Veteran that did not use the VA grant assistance. Modifications that can be done with the SAH grant money include, bathrooms, kitchens, bedrooms, covered porches, ramps and walkways, doors, windows, walkways, and security items. The VA determines eligibility for SAH grants based on permanent and service-connected disabilities such as; loss of both arms or both legs, blindness in both eyes, severe burn injuries, severe respiratory injuries and ALS.
