Certificate IV is a 52 week course (40 weeks tuition and 12 weeks holiday). The key clients for this qualification are people who have
developed some competence in English language and literacy skills and who have had a fair degree of formal or informal exposure
to English. It is essentially an ESL (English as a Second Language) course for Vocational Education purposes. It is NOT an ELICOS
course. Students may already possess a Certificate in Spoken & Written English, or demonstrate a proficiency level equivalent to an
International Second Language Proficiency Rating (ISLPR) of 2+, or completed an Elementary General English course.
Students are granted Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) where they are able to demonstrate that they can fulfil the assessment
criteria for a particular learning outcome or module. For learners with a mixed profile, it is possible for them to be enrolled across
certificate levels.
Progress: Assessment occurs on a weekly/ fortnightly basis, hence regular attendance is important. Assessment consists of a short
knowledge test; Observation of skills, and oral questioning; completion of activities and completion of Workbooks
Course Length: 12 months (52 weeks, made up of 40 weeks tuition, and 12 weeks holiday). Students may commence study with
induction on any Monday as approved by the Director, & general classes operate all weeks except holiday periods (see The
Academy’s Academic Calendar).
