Wausau East DECA Takes the Plunge!
On Friday, February 27, over 20 East DECA members participated in the
annual Polar Plunge for Special
Olympics. Ms. Ross went into
the event challenging her
students to raise more money as
a team than she as an
individual… and they did just
that! Together, the East DECA
team raised over $3,000! A
huge congrats to Andy King for
raising $400 on his own! East
DECA was announced as the
top school in the Wausau area
for fundraising as well as the fifth
place team overall for funds
raised at this event. As a new chapter, they are very excited about being
able to help out a great organization. Thank you to all staff and students
who supported this event!

values of respect, integrity, compassion and excellence. Their names were selected in our weekly drawings,
they were recognized on the daily announcements and they were able to select an acknowledgement from
our Lumberjack Pride box containing prizes and gift certificates from East High School and local retailers.

Cap, Gown & Announcement Delivery Date
Jostens will be here on Wednesday, April 29 from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM in the
Community Room (F125) for the distribution of caps, gowns and senior
announcements that were ordered in November. Please make checks
payable to JOSTENS.
The wearing of caps and gowns is a tradition that represents a common level
of achievement and personal worth regardless of the individual differences
between people. They are symbols of academic achievement that have
managed to survive over the years and continue here at Wausau East High
School. Only students who have a cap and gown may take part in the
graduation ceremony. Again, all students need to be furnished with a complete unit (cap, gown and tassel).
Extras will be available for purchase. Please call the Student Services Office at 715-261-0651 and speak to
Ms. Hollander if you have not ordered a cap/gown. The fee for this keepsake gown kit is $30. If you are in
need of individual items, prices are as follows: Tassel - $10; Cap - $10; Gown - $10. NOTE: Red gowns, 1998
to present from previous graduates may also be used.

District has been involved with the graduation parties to celebrate the successes of
our graduates. Each party provides a safe, alcohol- and drug-free night filled with fun,
games, food and prizes. The parties are supported entirely by the generous support
of our community. Volunteers are needed - we cannot do it without your help! If
you would like to be a part of this great event by volunteering your time, please contact Kathy BuckliCroker at kbuckli5@aol.com

WAHISCAN News
Juniors should begin thinking about senior pictures for the 2015-2016 yearbook. In early May, a letter will be
mailed home to juniors and their parents/guardians with suggested photographers in the area and the
guidelines for senior pictures used in the yearbook. The guidelines for senior pictures must be followed,
and the suggested photographers are aware of the guidelines and agree to abide by them. If you have
questions, please call Jamie Woller, WAHISCAN Adviser, at 715-261-0650, ext 23153.
Driving and Parking Lot Behavior
Spring is right around the corner and with spring comes melting, mud and sometimes an increase in speed in
the parking lot or revving of engines. Everyone that uses the parking lot is expected to follow all posted
speed limit signs, no right turn signs, and no loitering signs. The revving of engines is never allowed. Please
stay on the road. For some of our drivers, the mud is an invitation to drive on the lawn; this will not be
tolerated at any time. We are proud of our building and grounds and take great care to keep them in tip-top
condition. The expectation for all drivers at all times is to stay on the road and refrain from ‘mudding’ up the
lawn. Thank you for your support and cooperation in this important safety matter. Our parking lot needs to
remain a safe area for everyone.
Respect, Integrity, Compassion and Excellence
Our core values of respect, integrity, compassion and excellence carry us through our school day. Learning
is at the heart of what we are here at school to do. Being on time, following behavioral expectations,
speaking respectfully, complying with staff requests and expectations is how we want our students to
perform. Currently, our student population is at 91% compliance; this means the majority of our students do
the right thing. This leads to pride in ourselves, pride in our school and Lumberjack Pride. When we do the
right things, we learn not just in the curricular subject areas, but we learn life lessons that will take us
throughout all of our experiences. Respect, integrity, compassion and excellence = Lumberjack Pride. Once
a Lumberjack, always a Lumberjack.

On-Time Numbers
In February we improved on the unexcused tardies by 70, which is great, but we have not reached our goal of
fewer than 500 unexcused tardies. Excellent attendance is a life-long skill, an employability skill and an
important skill for school and work success. Many times students will say, “Once I have a job, of course, I’ll
be on time.” The reality is that being on time is a habit, a habit that is ingrained in us, and if we create a habit
of being on time, we will be on time for our commitments. On the other hand, when we have a habit of being
late, this carries over into all aspects of our lives. Being late shows a lack of respect or care. The good news
is that we can form new habits with hard work and dedication! Let’s reduce those tardies and reach our
school goal of 500 or fewer tardy behaviors. We can and we will! Our on-time graphs are shown below:

Lumberjack Pride School-Wide Expectations
As the winter turns to spring, please take a moment to review the dress code for Wausau East. This will be
especially important when shopping for spring clothing. We all want to wear those new outfits, but if they
don’t fit the dress code, they cannot be worn at school. The temperatures vary in different parts of the
building, so please dress appropriately. Wausau East prides itself on providing a learning environment
conducive to academic achievement and excellence. In order to continue to maintain high standards of
academic achievement and student behavior, we are outlining the student expectations below:
Respect, Compassion, Integrity, and Excellence

Social Networking: No cell phones in class; they are to be turned off and put away. No videotaping or
taking pictures of students or staff. Harassment or bullying has no place here and the consequence of
this behavior may be a school suspension and/or police action. No texting during class time.

Dress Code: No hats; hats are to be placed in the lockers during the school day for both boys and girls.
Coats are not allowed in the classrooms; coats (winter, spring and fall jackets) are to be stored in student
lockers. Sweatshirts are allowed as well as hooded sweatshirts (without wearing the hood). Pants
must be up on the hip/waist area; boxers and/or briefs cannot be visible. Skirts must totally cover the
bottom and be at least fingertip length when arms are by the side. Straps must be one inch or wider with
no bra straps showing. No bare, off the shoulder or backless tops. Parents will be called to bring a
change of clothing should the outfit or article of clothing not meet our dress code.

Parking Lot: Our parking lot is an area of concern. Driving to school and using the parking lot is a
privilege. Please follow all safety and speed limit laws; the parking lot is for all students and we need to
be respectful of each other’s property and vehicles. Revving of engines, intimidating other students,
burning out, or driving a vehicle that is not in good working condition will get parking privileges revoked.
You must have a valid driver’s license as well as a parking permit on any vehicle that is parked in our lot.

Tolerance: We all have our differences, yet we all need to get along together. With 1000 students under
one roof, there are bound to be differences, but these differences do not have to divide us. Racial slurs,
sexual harassment or name calling will not be tolerated here at East in the classroom, resource centers,
lunchroom, commons, athletic events, parking lot – anywhere.

Safety Drills: We practice monthly fire drills and will be practicing a lockdown drill as well as tornado
drills twice per year. Anytime we have a drill, we make sure to say, “This is just a drill”, to eliminate any
anxiety some students may feel. Code Red means there is a medical emergency and trained staff
respond.

On-time Behavior: We need our students here and ON TIME!! Parents, we need your help and support
on this. Students must be in their seats and ready to learn when the bell rings, not walking into the school
or classroom when the bell rings. Students have five minutes to pass during classes; a warning bell rings
four minutes into the five minutes to alert students they need to get moving to class. Student meetings
are held to remedy the situation if students are late regularly. Detentions are given when the late
behavior gets excessive. Any more than three tardies per quarter is considered excessive.

Lunch Room: Students should clean up after themselves in the lunchroom and
stay in the lunchroom until they are dismissed. Cleaning up your own mess is
your job, not the lunch ladies or custodians. It is expected that students will pick
up after themselves and help keep the lunchroom/commons clean.
These expectations for student behavior provide a safe learning environment for all
students. When students, parents and staff know what to expect, it brings a sense of
order and structure to school. Thank you for partnering with us to provide high
academic standards in a safe learning environment.

Health and Physical Education News
Lifetime Activities Physical Education class explored the countryside of Wausau East snowshoeing and cross
country skiing. They have been learning that exercising outside not only is good for you physically
(snowshoeing and cross country skiing at a moderate pace can burn 600 calories an hour) but also the
Vitamin D from the sun can help improve your mood, immunity and bone strength, and maybe most
importantly, gives a welcome break to prevent winter blues.
Self-defense and yoga are also units within the course. Students
attended the Woodson YMCA for a yoga class last semester and will
be participating in hot yoga this month at the YMCA. Officer Hartwig,
our school resource officer at East, has been leading our Self-defense
unit.
Students have learned
the important mental and
physical skills of selfdefense. Students got to
meet a special guest
speaker, Lah Thao, a
teacher at EEA and
owner of Rising Son
Mixed Martial Arts Gym.

Freshman Health Teen Panel Discussion
Concluding the Teen Dating Violence Unit, we welcomed a panel of professionals to discuss with students
their role in keeping our community safe. Students also learned about the importance of making healthy
decisions. The panel discussed what could happen if teens were to be involved in the law and the legal
processes that would accompany those choices when dealing with sexual assault.
We’d like to thank the following panel members for spending the day with our classes:
Detective Kolb - Wausau Police Department
Theresa Wetzsteon - Deputy District Attorney
Lee Shipway - Counselor, Peaceful Solutions
John Klug - Juvenile Probation and Parole
Bo Morley and Derek Durante - Adult Probation and Parole
Tracy Fremming - Nurse who specifically deals with victims of abuse from St. Clare’s Hospital
Shannon Jarecki, Jessica Lind and Jamie Guensburg - Women’s Community
