I am thrilled to have both Allan Rickmeier and Bill Andrews on board this year. Allan Rickmeier is a bassist with the San Diego symphony so it is very beneficial to the San Diego Symphony and to Local 325 to have Symphony representation. Bill Andrews, a freelance bass player, is going to be able to provide us with much needed computer and website expertise. Building Improvements: In the last couple of months we have replaced all the carpeting in the building and had all the boardroom chairs recovered. Currently, shutters are being installed in the board room, front office and rehearsal room. Some other “unseen” improvements will be made to wiring, etc., to maintain a structurally sound building. Streamlining: We are working on making membership dues and work dues payable online. Once the system is in place, we will inform the membership by e-mail. We will also make it possible to receive your dues bill as an e-mail, rather than a hard copy to help further save in printing and postage costs. Late last year the membership was given the choice of receiving their copy of the Sound Post online instead of by mail. We are thrilled that approximately half our membership elected to receive just the online copy. Not only have we reduced our printing costs, but we are doing our best to be “green”. Educational Outreach Fund: Please make use of Local 325’s Educational Outreach Fund. In these tough economic times, we have the opportunity to help schools fund educational concerts for their students. At the same time, you get to create work for yourself! The fund is run similarly to the MPF and will pay up to 50% of the cost of the performance for up to a quintet. This is a wonderful opportunity to reach out to the schools in your area and play live concerts for children that may otherwise never be exposed to high quality live music. Please contact the office should you wish to make use of this fund. Thank you to those members that have already utilized this fund to ensure the future of live music. IMPORTANT CHANGE to the next General Meeting: In an attempt to increase participation at General Meetings, we are experimenting with changing the General Meeting to Noon on Mondays to coincide with the end of our Board of Directors meetings. We hope that holding these meetings at Noon will work better for everyone’s schedules. Also, it will provide those who are interested, with an opportunity to attend any portion of the Board of Directors meetings they wish to. This not only give me heartburn, but also weird dreams – most recently, I dreamt about some of the marvelous musical characters in San Diego’s past… Who remembers Don and Pete Jacks (Giacalone), who were very active musically about 50 years ago? Or Bill Green holding forth at the Hotel del Coronado for many years as music director? Vic De Nunzio and Eddie Ramos (saxophone and trumpet, respectively) playing often at the Kona Kai on Shelter Island? Dick Ryan (a past Local 325 President) gracing the stage at a smoke-filled room called the Hillcrest Hideaway… Bart Hazlett’s gang playing for nearly everything at the Sports Arena – circuses, rodeos, ice shows, etc. In 1960 there was a contest for Governor between Pat Brown and Richard Nixon. Both campaign chairpersons called Bart to provide music for rallies, etc. Bart solved the issue by taking both gigs and issuing the band reversible vests – blue on one side and red on the other. We were delighted to get the work! (Pat Brown won…) I don’t think either side caught on to the fact that there was only one band. Back in the fifties, Bart’s big band back all the grandstand shows at the Del Mar Fair. The era of selfcontained groups with their own bands had not yet happened. Xavier Cugat, holding his Chihuahua and accompanied by his hypermammiferous Bimbo du Jour was a favorite – gracious and easy to work with. So many memories! Next time I need to delve into my recent world of dreams; I’ll try oysters with peanut butter… Here is a serious alert for all Life Members – let’s face reality, folks, we are all approaching that magic moment when e will “shuffle off this mortal coil” and join the big band in the sky. Arias, Secretary ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SECRETARY-TREASURER/BUSINESS REPRESENTATIVE’S REPORT The beginning of 2010 finds the Local occupied with the renegotiation of collective bargaining agreements with the Old Globe and the La Jolla Playhouse theaters. We are still involved with negotiating a successor agreement with Orchestra Nova San Diego (formerly the San Diego Chamber Orchestra). What we are presently experiencing with both the Nova and the Old Globe negotiations (and presumably with the upcoming La Jolla Playhouse negotiation) are steadfast proposals from the respective managements that wages and all ancillary cost items attached to wages be frozen for the duration of the new agreements (the Union’s proposals call for our Local’s standard three (3) year agreements). Wage freeze proposals by Employers are being presented in labor negotiation tables across the country in all industries. The cause is attributed to the general state of the current American economy. While the Union and our player negotiating committees are aware of the economy’s present state of affairs (one management person curtly asked us at the negotiating table if we “read the paper?”), Employer proposals that ask to freeze our musicians’ wages for the entire duration of multi-year contracts are generally unacceptable. The Union and the Players’ Committees are hard put to endorse wage freeze proposals for ratification by our various musicians’ pools. Our wage proposals call for modest gains. We are mindful of the present economy’s impact on the Employers’ income streams which are driven primarily by third party donations and ticket revenue. One recognized strategy we employ when engaged in negotiations where progressive staggered percentage wage increases present formidable challenges to the Employer is to present overloaded proposals on other subjects of bargaining such as pension rates, doubling rates, Principal premium pay, guaranteed number of services, guaranteed musician complements, musician substitute policies, ample advance notice of changes to scheduling dates and times of services, addition of services, cancellation of services, etc. Musicians derive direct and indirect economic benefits from advances in these areas. We may not be able to realize sizable wage increases in these negotiations; however, we endeavor to compensate for this shortfall by negotiating balanced agreements which attain advances in the foregoing subjects of bargaining. Assisting President Glasson and me on the Old Globe negotiation are Player Committee Chair Jeff Dalrymple, Steve Dillard and Mark Shapiro – many thanks for their many hours of commitment and dedication. The Nova negotiation has been a long and difficult one. Assisting here are Player Committee Chair Pat Pfiffner, Andrea Altona and Linda Piatt – many thanks for their patience, persistence and perseverance. The La Jolla Playhouse Players’ Committee will be duly represented by Steve Dillard, Mark Shapiro and John Rekevics. Life Member BERT TURETZKY (bass) received recognition (among many other awards) in the New York jazz periodical, All About Jazz, for his CD recorded at member Rick James’ RAJ Studio. The CD is entitled San Diego Session. Bert received honorable mention. Life Members GARY LEFEBVRE (tenor/alto saxes) and JACK COSTANZO (conga) were featured musicians at a Stan Kenton alumni extravaganza held at the Four Points Sheraton at LAX in Los Angeles this past October. Gary and Jack were joined by many other notable musicians in the world of jazz. BENNY HOLLMAN once again lead his combo for this past season’s San Diego Charger home games and at the playoff game against the New York Jets.
