516A Stanley Ave. Selkirk, MB R1A 0S1 Telephone 785-8284 FAX 482-8370 MISSION STATEMENT E-mail: bonaventure-sch@lssd.ca École Bonaventure is a safe and respectful learning community in which every member has the opportunity to develop his or her academic, social, physical and creative abilities within a French Immersion setting. www.lssd.ca/bonaventure/home.htm Principal’s Message April 2015 I had hoped that the new gymnasium would have been open for a tour during the Student-Led conferences, but alas it wasn’t meant to be. We’re still hoping for a spring ribbon-cutting ceremony though! The exterior brick has been completed and the interior has been painted. Soon they will be bringing in the hardwood for the flooring. In the meantime, we will be busy introducing new families to the benefits of French Immersion April 8th from 7:00 to 7:45 p.m. in our library. This session is geared to parents who would like to enroll their child in Kindergarten or Grade 1 for the 2015-2016 school-year. Since the Bonaventure doors will not yet be accessible, visitors are asked to come in through the doors on Sophia. April 9th we will have our school-wide Spell-a-thon. Pledge sheets will be returned home by Friday, April 10th. Funds will go towards a new projector and screen for the gymnasium. April 17th there will be no school for students, however our teachers will be learning how to assess and help students improve their French Oral Communication skills. April is Music Month in Manitoba, and certainly here at Bonaventure. Students will be rehearsing two special school songs which will be featured during the grand opening of the gymnasium. They will also begin to prepare for our spring concert to be held May 14th. Since making the decision to retire at the end of this school year, I have been organizing school photos and making sure our history is accessible for years to come. I ran across very interesting pictures and noticed that two current staff members have been at Bonaventure longer than I! I would like to acknowledge the following staff and their milestones: 5+ Linda Andres Josee Belanger Josee Buisse Suzanne Corner Guy Dube Shannon Dube Ginette Goulet Janet Herbachuk Robin Kendall Sherry Michaluk Christiane Pare Vanessa Stamm 10+ Heather Kelly Carmen Pedersen 15+ Meg Cullen Rachelle Tougas 20+ Lindy Beveridge … actually 23 years! Félicitations Mme Beveridge!! On behalf of the Bonaventure Team, I wish you a well-deserved Spring Break! We`ll see you back at school Monday, April 6 (Day 5). The April school calendar is also attached. Mme Rachelle Tougas, Principal Bonaventure Bulletin Page 2 FROM THE LIBRARY … I would like to thank all the parents, students and staff who attended our Spring Scholastics Book Fair. We raised $4,000.00 in sales! This means we received 60% in profit for our library! This allows us to purchase more books for the library from Scholastic. Congratulations to Avery B. who won the Family event door prize! She and M. Dubé each received $25 towards the purchase of books. I also had a “guess how many fish crackers in the jar” contest. The closest was Ella C. in Grade 5 with a guess of 387 (there were 382 in the jar) who won $10 at the book fair. I am always proud of how well our book fair does and that is because of our wonderful students and their families who support it every year. Merci!! Josée Bélanger-Galay, Library Clerk Parent Advisory Council The 5th annual SPRING FLING will be held on Friday, April 24th from 6:30-9:00 pm. There is a limited number of tickets (and we have sold-out in the past), so please purchase your tickets by April 7th. Besides our regular venue with a snack bar and door prizes, we will be raffling off an IPAD MINI with an I-Tunes card and other goodies available. The funds will go towards the purchase of a large projection system to be used for special events and assemblies for the students at EB. Hope to see you there! Have a great spring break!! Our next PAC meeting will be held in the school library on April 14 at 6:45 pm. All parents are welcome and child care is provided. Please come in through the doors on Sophia. Thank-you! Leslie Whitney, PAC Chair Low Cost Bicycle Helmet Initiative We have been informed by Manitoba Education that the helmets purchased through the Low Cost Bicycle Helmet Initiative will be delivered to us during the week of May 12-20, 2015, instead of the previously communicated date of March. This is due to a delay in the helmets being shipped from overseas, which unfortunately has caused a delay in shipping them out to schools across Manitoba. Gaynor Family Regional Library Resources The Gaynor Family Regional library has added 100’s of ebooks that only require an internet connected device and a public library card to use. If you are a resident of Selkirk, St. Andrews or St. Clements it is free to get a library card and access these materials. This collection is in addition to the eLibraries of over 10,000 ebooks for adults and children. Please note this is not the same materials as World Book encyclopedia but specialized publications like: animals of the world, building blocks of math, early peoples, etc. The system is very easy to use and provides access to excellent and respected reference information for K-12 students. It can be accessed at the library website GFRL.ORG under our services and homework help. Standard Browser software and applicable plug-ins (Flash) do need to be up to date to view the publications. So if you are working on a school project and need access to resources this is a quality option to access reviewed materials.
