Responses from our Nobles and families to our motto Celebrating Hadji excite me—we are Hadji and celebrating our history and our future is our nature and our spirit! Our parade units and clowns are excited about our focus on increasing the visibility of Hadji Shriners and giving children of all ages a positive memory of our beloved Shrine through our participation in parades—Westgate School, Okaloosa Island, Milton, Orange Beach, Navarre Beach, Chumuckla, Jay and more. As I write this, it has been 24 hours since our Clowns; Komics; Antique Cars; Hayseeds; Misfits; Oriental Band; and Riders along with our Ladies; Past Potentate Charlie Batson and I experienced the absolute joy of parading at Westgate School. Participation in the County and Western Dance, sponsored by the Misfits and Riders Units, was great. Everyone had a footstomping good time to some great music. The Units did a super job and have planned three more dances this year. It was worth the evening just to watch Noble Bert Penegar, 2nd Ceremonial Master, teaching Lady Tammie the art of North Carolina beach shagging—whatever that is. On the evening of March 3rd there will be a murder at Hadji. The Hadji Dinner Theater will feed you a fine meal and engage you in solving this mystery. I promise you will have fun. Call the office to get your ticket. When you read this, a bunch of us will have represented Hadji at Hospital Days at our Tampa Hospital—a special time as Illustrious Sir Arngie Pope, P.P., is the Chairman of the Board of Governors at Tampa. At the same time, another group represented you at the Dixie Shrine Association mid-winter meeting in Birmingham where Illustrious Sir Mike McCombs, P.P. and member of the Untouchables is 2nd Vice President. Start getting ready for a great celebration when he is President. Noble Tony Stepleton, Chief Rabban, is marching quick-step and making our Special Events 50-gun Give-Away a special opportunity for everyone regardless of where they live. Imagine, with single ticket you can win every gun on the list. Sell five tickets and get a free ticket for a special 10-gun drawing. Call Noble Tony or the Hadji Office and find out how! We are moving quickly to complete the plans for our Potentate’s Trip to Savannah, Georgia, in May. There will be a special meeting in the Gold Room at 2:00 PM on March 4th, come and get the trip information and join the excitement. We are committed to make this a fun, affordable trip over a long weekend. Alee Shriners, Savannah, are looking forward to our visit and we are planning to do something together. If you haven’t made a bus trip lately, you owe it to yourself. A group of us just got back from the bus trip to the East West Shrine Game in St. Petersburg and it was a blast! Assistant Rabban Darrell Mashburn and Lady Kathy were fantastic—a good game and a barrel of laughs.. The Potentate’s Ball on June 23rd will be the 45th Birthday Party for Hadji and we will recognize the members and families who worked so hard that we can celebrate Hadji. This magnificent facility was built by the hands of our Nobles and their families who were fed by their Ladies while they worked. If you have memories, stories or pictures, call me (850) 305-2018. Your help and participation will make this a grand celebration. I can promise you a surprise at the party! With great sadness, I report the loss of Lifetime Member Stan Sewell, following an extended but gallant battle with a serious illness. Noble Stan leaves behind a loving wife, Lady Ann, and several children, and the many Hadji Shriners and Directors Staff members who called him friend and brother. He was the Secretary of the Staff for more than 19 years. His exemplary service set the standard for which all future Secretaries will seek to obtain. He was as active in the Shrine as any person I have know and his knowledge and experience will be long missed. Plans are underway for the Hadji Golf Tournament, which is sponsored by the Directors Staff each year. This is a major money maker for Hadji and demands our full support and participation. Please get with Golf Chairman Jay Cowick to ask about what you can do to help make this tournament a success. It looks like we will have a Ceremonial sometime in April. Director Bobby Richie will be sharing his plans with us as details become available. As this writing, I don’t know if it will be a one day or two day event. March birthdays: Glen Etheridge (3/14), Adrienne Zarahn (3/15), and Odie Eddins (3/22). Happy birthday all! NWFL Blood Center Greetings to the Potentate, Divan and Nobles. Nobles, if you missed the Feb. 5th Super Bowl Party at Hadji, sponsored by YOSHI, you missed a fun time. The food was great as well as the fellowship. There was a variety of food- something for everybody, and it was delicious. Two football pools were in place to make the game even more exciting. There were over a hundred people there and everyone had a great time. Thanks YOSHI. Hadji’s new sign will advertise not only events for Hadji but also for appendant bodies (Lodge events, Scottish Rite events, etc.) It will flash messages 12 seconds out of every 60 seconds. Hadji’s security is being enhanced. New doors for the East side will be installed, and padlocks and combination locks will be installed on certain doors. Lighting will be updated for the front of the Center as well as the parking lots. All this should provide better security for the building. Nobles, mark your calendars for the Director’s Staff golf tournament on May 12th at Marcus Pointe. The cost is $ 300/team and if you have anything to contribute to the ditty bags see Jay Cowick. A special thanks to 2011 Potentate Ill. Sir Robert Gean and Lady Kathy for their inspiring leadership during 2011. Congratulations the 2012 Potentate Ill. Sir Dan Bodiford and may this year be more than you have planned. OSTSC pledges our support. By Clown Prez Bones THE CLOWNS ARE BACK!!!!! Tom Swindle, Mike Weaver and Emmitt Toon have reactivated the Clown Unit, with the addition of new clowns Robert Gean PP, Darrell Mashburn, B.J. Odom, Tony Stepelton, Eddie Stewart, and veteran clowns Bob Burt and John Straub. In December, OSTSC had it’s election followed by a great Christmas dinner at the Elks Club. The following officers were elected for 2012: President: Marion Gobin Vice President: John Brown Secretary: Al Brown Treasurer: George Bonner The new clowns have been busy learning about costumes, make up and selecting a clown character that would best fit the individual. Two new clowns, Robert and Darrell, made their debut with the assistance of Bob and John at the Westgate School Mardi Gras Parade (They even appeared in the Pensacola News Journal and on WEAR TV!!) The kids loved us and we all had a great time. President Gobin wishes to thank the 2011 officers for a job well done!!! December was a busy month. Thanks to the efforts of Noble Walt Hartness, a large flat screen television complete with cable was installed. Nobles are encouraged to by singularly or in groups and use the Club. Many members have expressed a desire to use the club for more than monthly meetings. This past year numerous improvements have been made to the backyard. Also in December, 15 Christmas baskets, complete with frozen turkey, canned vegetables, stuffing and a $50.00 WAL-MART gift certificates were given to needy middle school families. The $50.00 gift certificates were the gift of two anonymous Nobles. If you did not know, the Crestview High School “Big Red Machine” band participated in the Jan. 2nd Tournament of Roses parade in Pasadena California. The OSTSC proudly supported this trip with a $1,800.00 donation. Like the Crestview High ‘Bull Dogs’, though small, the OSTSC is able to run with the ‘big dogs’!!! PAGE 8 “Celebrating Hadji” Dispatch from the High Priest & Prophet Hadji Misfits By Jess Rhoden By Morgan Hamm If you missed the bus trip to the EastWest Shrine Game, you missed a really fine time. There was grand fun and fellowship on the trip down and back. Tailgating was fun. And the stadium was as first class as there is to be seen. The game was a good one. By now you may have seen the pictures of the karaoke that took place at the hotel. Some may never forget it. If you didn’t participate this year, you should plan on going next year so you won’t miss the fun. Thanks to Darrell and Kathy Mashburn for all the hard work in putting this together. Greetings Nobles, The Misfits and Riders Units hosted our first 2012 Country Western Dance on February 4. The C & L Express Band kept the dance floor busy. We want to thank Illustrious Sir Dan Bodiford and Lady Lora for their support along with members, wives, and friends of the Divan, Antique Cars, Provost Guard, and of course Misfits and Riders Units. Please watch for our next dance on May 12th and bring you family and friends for a great evening of music, dancing and socializing. This years Special Event 2012 is a 50 gun give-a-way. We need everyone’s help to sell these tickets. They should be popular and easy to sell because each ticket is only $20 and gives the holder 50 chances to win a prize! We need the help of the Nobles to sell the outside of the Shrine to your friends, relatives, and coworkers. We had a table at the gun show and were successful in selling to people who came by. This has been a very popular event at other locations around the country and should be a winner for Hadji. We need your help to make it successful. YOSHI is presenting another of their dinner and a show this month. This time it is a redneck wedding called Podunk Pandemonium. There is a barbeque dinner and guests are encouraged to dress the part (camo, etc.). It should be a lot of fun. As mentioned in our February SEZ article, each year February is our biggest month of every year for parades. February 4th began the Mardi Gras Parade season with our traditional parade at Westgate School. This year Hadji Shriners had one of the best turnouts ever in the approximate 10 years that Shriners have participated in this parade. Leading Hadji was our Potentate Dan Bodiford chauffeured by Past Potentate Charlie Batson, in his great looking VW convertible, followed by members of the Antique Cars, Clowns, Comics, and Misfits Units. Needless to say, the Clowns and Comics stole the show before what seemed like a thousand excited and screaming young children. While this article is written early in February, we have six remaining Mardi Gras parades on schedule. Hopefully, all of the Hadji parade units have received a copy of the 2012 Hadji Mardi Gras parade schedule, and are available to represent our great organization. It looks like a fun year is shaping up at Hadji. Our Potentate’s theme of “Celebrating Hadji” certainly sets the tone for a year of fun. We hope by the time this article is published, that Diane Burt, Jim Edenfield and David Keddy are doing much better. Waters & Hibbert FUNERAL HOME Independently Owned W.A. Keep the Faith, Morgan Hamm MARCH 2012 ANTIQUE CAR UNIT By: Red Stewart We open up this month by saying; we don’t have a great deal to talk about. We covered the installation of our officers last month. We started out the month of February by having a working party to get our Mardi Gras float in presentable condition. We got together on February 4th and started the job. There was not a great deal to be done. Cal Gray had already had the float taken to his shop and he had the wheel bearings and lights checked out. I need to interrupt here and say the unit owes a thank you to Cal. We store the float at his house and he looks for it for us. He and Bob Hill donated the float to the unit years back. All he asked was that we take care of it. Sometimes we forget that our friends and brothers have done for us. So I say again, a great thanks to you Cal Gray. Now back to the working party. We rejuvenated the port-a-potty, anchored it back to the float and it is now usable. This comes in very handy during the parade. We had a good turn out of people to do the work, led by our new leader – John Hartley. John is a worker, once he shows up. We have formed a committee to get work started on our car show this year. It is never too early to start. We had a meeting on February 2 nd and covered the opening work to be done. The date for the car show this year is going to July 21, 2012. Put this on your calendar and come out and enjoy it. It seems to be getting better every year. I don’t know of any one who is sick at the present time. We’re all getting older and can’t jump as high as we used to but we still try to jump a little. A group of us attended the country and western dance put on by the misfits and riders, February 4th. This the first time I have been to one of their dances. It was an enjoyable evening. Everyone seemed to be having a great time. The band was very good. We are going to close by now but saying, “let’s get out and support Hadji country. So long from the Old Car folks. MARCH 2012 ASSISTANT RABBAN Greetings, The Shriners Hospitals for children East West Shrine game was this past January 21st. Congratulations to Harold Richardson and his team for a great job putting on this game. This was the first year at Tropicana field in St Petersburg, FL. I hope this is the beginning of a long run there, Tropicana Field is a enclosed dome and a fantastic place to watch a sporting event, it’s where the Florida Marlins baseball team play and not a bad seat in the house. Once again Hadji had a bus load of nobles and their ladies spend a week-end of fun and fellowship, attending the game, a few discovering their talent for Karaoke (are maybe not). One of the highlights of the trip was a tour of our Tampa hospital; half of our “Celebrating Hadji” group had never had an opportunity to visit a Shrine hospital before. All were very impressed and moved by the facilities and the special care given our kids, its one thing to hear speeches and talk about the hospitals in meetings, but it really hits home when you get to see it up close and personal. PAGE 9 of the same sadness, we cannot ever replace these Nobles, their leadership, their friendship and the memories of good times shared, but we must continue on as they did, and would wish us to. Your other brother, Darrell Aka ”Biscuit” I am very happy to report we saw quiet a few Hadji Nobles not of our group, enjoying themselves and supporting the game, there were guys from Hadji cooking and serving food at the tailgate party; they do this every year and I just want to thank them for doing so. Hadji is having a spring ceremonial April, 27 & 28 th . As always “we need candidates”. PAGE 10 “Celebrating Hadji” MARCH 2012 History of Hadji Temple – 1985 Hadji Temple is proud of its accomplishments and proud of all of it’s over 2500 members. Prior to receiving a charter for establishing Hadji Temple, most of the Shriners in Northwest Florida were members of Morocco Temple in Jacksonville. Historically, Morocco is the mother Temple of all Shrine Temples in Florida, Georgia and Alabama. Morocco Temple was granted a charter dated March 30, 1888 and was the 42nd Shrine Temple chartered. Hadji Temple received its dispensation, with the cooperation and approval of Morocco Temple, on July 13, 1967, at 11:10½ a.m. in Washington, D.C., at the 93rd Imperial Council Session of the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine of North America. One thousand forty-eight were involved in the dispensation and great joy was in the heart of all those who had worked so hard in the birth of Hadji Temple. Though there was love and respect held for the mother Temple of Morocco, the challenge of building a Temple to serve the 12 Northwest Florida counties was great. What led up to Northwest Florida having its own Temple would take too much space to tell about, but briefly, the idea commenced in 1945 at a meeting of Pensacola Shriners at the San Carlos Hotel. The ultimate aim of having a Shrine Temple in Northwest Florida commenced at the meeting. Although less than 30 were present, plans were discussed of having a Shrine Club chartered under Morocco Temple, which came about; and on June 5, 1945, a charter was granted to Pensacola Shrine Club by Morocco Temple of Jacksonville. Noble J.A. Alvarez was appointed to serve as Chairman or President of the new club for the remainder of the year 1945. The first elected President was W.A. “Andy” Hibbert, who served in 1946. The first Ceremonial in initiate candidates was held in Pensacola in 1946, and this was the first time there had ever been a Shrine Ceremonial in Northwest Florida. Through the years, Pensacola Shrine Club flourished and, later, Morocco Temple chartered Panama City Shrine Club and the Fort Walton Beach shrine Club. The three Shrine Clubs in Northwest Florida grew and operated successfully. Pensacola Shrine Club became Morocco Temple’s largest Shrine Club and, in later years, was one of the largest Shrine Clubs in all of the North America. Many Temples throughout the United States were represented in the membership of the old Shrine Club of Morocco Temple in Northwest Florida. Over the years, under Morocco Temple, the three Shrine Clubs in Northwest Florida accomplished much for Shrinedom, no small accomplishment of which was approximately $50,000 being donated to the Greenville Unit of the Shrine Hospitals for Crippled Children. There was a good bit of talk throughout the Northwest Florida about ultimately having a Shrine Temple; and on one occasion prior to the birth of Hadji, a petition for dispensation to have a Temple in Northwest Florida located in Pensacola was circulated and several hundred signatures were obtained, but the effort was not successful and was dropped. On another occasion, the Shriners in Panama City made tentative plans to obtain a Shrine Temple for Northwest Florida located in Panama City, but this effort was dropped and unsuccessful. In the Fall of 1966, under the leadership of the first Potentate of Hadji Temple, J.B. Hopkins, Pensacola’s Shrine Club membership went to work to obtain the signing of petitions for dispensation to have a Temple in Northwest Florida to be located in Pensacola. Panama City and Fort Walton Beach Shrine Clubs membership cooperated and worked. A thousand Shriners, in good standing, were required. The task, though difficult, was successfully concluded with 1048 Shriners certified, who came from 68 different Temple in addition to Morocco Temple, with 897 Nobles coming from Morocco and 151 Nobles from the other 67 Temples. At the granting of Hadji Temple’s dispensation on July 13, 1967, J.B. Hopkins was then on Morocco Temple’s elected Divan, where he had served for a number of years through the appointed Divan Chairs into the elected Divan. He as the Assistant Rabban and became Hadji Temple’s first Potentate, serving through the dispensation year and until the Temple elections in 1969. Hadji Temple’s official charter, following its dispensation year, was granted at the 94th Imperial Council Session in Chicago, Illinois, on July 11, 1968. The following were members of Hadji’s first Divan: Potentate J.B. Hopkins; Chief Rabban Ray Henry Schmidt; Assistant Rabban Preston E. McArthur; Recorder C. Ed Wood; 1st Ceremonial Master Herbert N. Mizell, Jr.; 2nd Ceremonial Master Carlos G. Murr; and Captain of the Guard John R. Bray. Hadji Temple worked hard and prospered and by January 1, 1985 could proudly claim a membership of over 4,300 Nobles. During the preceding two years, with the cooperation of Hadji Temple, a group of Nobles from Panama City Shrine Club had been collecting signatures on a petition to form a new Temple. This effort, which was spearheaded by Hadji past Potentate W.C. Hales and Divan member Roy M. Bobo, culminated in July 1985 when, during the Imperial Session in Atlanta, dispensation was granted to form a Temple in Panama City, to be known as Shaddai. When the dispensation was granted, Hadji automatically lost 1,000 members and eight counties. At the present time Hadji has more than 1,500 members and has exclusive jurisdiction over Escambia, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa and Walton counties with three Shrine Clubs, Fort Walton Beach Shrine Club, Old Spanish Trail Shrine Club and Walton County Shrine Club. Hadji’s beautiful Mosque is located on 35 landscaped acres at 800 West 9 Mile Road. We have the facility, we have the Nobility and we have the will to grow and perpetuate the world’s greatest philanthropy, Shriner’s Hospital for Crippled Children. U.S. Postage PAID PERMIT NO. 119 Pensacola, FL SHRINERS INTERNATIONAL 800 W. NINE MILE ROAD PENSACOLA, FLORIDA 32534 Published Monthly News Shriner’s Hospitals for Children Begins Annual Burn Prevention Campaign Monday, January 23, 2012 2012 safety campaign focuses on teaching children and families to Be Burn Aware, especially at home (TAMPA, Fla.) Feb. 5-11, 2012 is Burn Awareness Week, and during this week, shriner’s Hospitals for Children® will begin its annual burn prevention campaign. This year’s focus is on teaching children to “Be Burn Aware,” especially at home. Information and materials pertaining to the effort can be found on the health care system’s website dedicated to burn awareness and prevention, www.burnawareness.org. Homes are the sites of thousands of burn injuries to children every year, including scalds and fire-related injuries. Many of these incidents could have been easily prevented by following and implementing some basic safety tips. “At shriner’s Hospitals for Children, preventing burn injuries and providing burn awareness education is an ongoing, yearlong effort,” said Peter Armstrong, M.D., chief medical officer, shriner’s Hospitals for Children. “In 2012, our campaign, ‘Be Burn Aware,’ focuses on teaching children ways to avoid burn injuries at home.” The campaign introduces two new child-friendly characters who showcase and share our messages: Boots and Brewster – a caped, cuddly bear and a googly-eyed teapot. In the materials, the pair leads children through the various rooms of a house, pointing out dangers, and how to easily correct or avoid them. Previous years’ efforts have emphasized prevention of gasoline and gasoline-related burn and scald injuries. Shriner’s Hospitals for Children encourages everyone concerned with keeping children safe to visit www.burnawareness.org for important burn prevention tips and information on how to order the free materials, which are available in both English and Spanish. Be Burn Aware with Boots and Brewster About Shriner’s Hospitals for Children Shriner’s Hospitals for Children® is changing lives every day through innovative pediatric specialty care, world-class research and outstanding medical education.
