SHENANDOAH VALLEY PREPARATORY MUSIC Class Descriptions Musikgarten is an exciting program for infants to children age seven. Classes are taught by Miranda Kirby, Musikgarten specialist. Children love music for the pure joy of it! When nurtured in a child’s early years, the rewards of a musical foundation expand to provide immeasurable results. Music is a vital link for all future learning, and it stimulates both sides of the brain. EMU’s Musikgarten program provides opportunities for children to build confidence in musical expression and lays a foundation for future music learning. Through a combination of songs, movement games, instruments, story telling and listening, children are exposed to a wonderful musical experience. The physical benefits of early childhood music are outstanding. Fine and gross motor skills can be improved through improvisational dancing and handling of instruments. Vocal and speech development can improve through singing. Listening skills and concentration improve with aural training. The old-fashioned goals of sharing and cooperation are reinforced with the sharing of instruments and encouragement of other students. The most important benefit, however, is the proven positive effects that music has on brain development. This has been thoroughly researched and documented and is most crucial during the first six years. Miranda Kirby, instructor Miranda Kirby completed a bachelor of music from JMU and a master of music from Northwestern University. She has taught music in Fairfax County Public Schools, Stuart Hall, and Eastern Mennonite High School. She maintains a cello studio in the EMU preparatory program, performs regularly on cello throughout the area, and is an moderator of music exams for the International Baccalaureate Organization in Cardiff, Wales. She has three children ages 4 months to 6 years, and believes strongly in the benefit of early music experiences.
