By Margaret Ann Hammond McLaughlin On August 19, 1954 at approx 7:30 pm. Margaret Ann Hammond and Morgan McLaughlin stood before the Justice of the Peace in Dallas, GA wanting to be married. The JP took a look at the youthful woman before him and asked, “How old are you Ann?” “Sixteen”, I said firmly, but I was really only fourteen and a half. Morgan was nineteen. We had only known each other for 3 months, and he wasn’t the most handsome or richest, but I knew he was the one! Now, 60 years later, with 2 children, Falicia Ann and Morgan Timothy, we’ve had a wonderful life together. It has had its share of ups and downs as all marriages do, but the highs have been as tall as any mountain and I’ve never regretted my decision to marry the man of my dreams. We’ve worked hard, scrimped and saved, which has made all we have the more valuable and more enjoyable. We’ve even found the time to travel to Italy, Alaska, and other exotic places. We once drove from Georgia to California and our marriage survived that trip! Would I do it again? You bet I would! Reginald and Perrie Holmes are proud to inform our friends, families and extended families of the engagement of their daughter Ryann “Kourtney” Holmes to Terrell Beasley. Kourtney’s fiancé popped the question in St. Thomas, V.I . last May. The wedding will be this October in Roswell, Georgia. Marietta High School Air Force Junior ROTC Receives Top Awards in Competition Marietta High School (MHS) Air Force Junior ROTC (AFJROTC) Unit GA-20021 Cadet Harry McMahon recently earned the Distinguished Commandant Award, the highest award presented to any Cadet at the Converse College Summer Leadership School. For the first time in the history of the Leadership School, Cadet McMahon served as the Wing Commander and was responsible for all cadet activities that took place that week. Of the 31 MHS AFJROTC cadets attending the 2014 Summer Leadership School, 13 received top awards. “MHS cadets competed against 317 cadets from 23 other schools representing North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia,” said Lt. Col. James T. Wilson, MHS Senior Aerospace Science Instructor. “Without a doubt, the cadets representing MHS at this year’s Summer Leadership School made us proud, and continued to set the bar high for the other schools to follow.” Flying High – Literally AND Figuratively It has been a red-letter (or, shall we say, red-ribbon) summer for Civil Air Patrol (CAP) cadets at Marietta Air Museum Cadet Squadron. Four cadets received well-deserved recognition for their promotions in the month of June: C/SSgt Arthur Brands, C/SSgt Elishah Daniels, C/SSgt Whitney Reuschel, and C/SSgt Ethan Williams. C/SrA Cleopatra Amare and C/SrA Dillon Roberts received awards for their promotions in July. Congratulations are in order for these cadets, ages 12-18, who spent much time during their summer vacations to prepare for multiple evaluations and an interview to earn their promotions. One of CAP’s three primary missions is to ignite a passion of aviation through aerospace education. To that end, an Aerospace Education Weekend, hosted by the Marietta Air Museum Cadet Squadron, is being offered to Georgia CAP Group 1 cadets on August 29-31 in Rome, Georgia. Multiple training sessions, presentations on aerospace, and games will be offered. Cadets will also have an opportunity to take flights in Civil Air Patrol aircraft, weather permitting. Civil Air Patrol is the official auxiliary of the United States Air Force and focuses on its three main missions: Emergency Services, Cadet Program and Aerospace Education. The Marietta Air Museum Cadet Squadron meets at the Marietta Museum of History’s Aviation Wing located at 550 Perrin Road in Marietta each Thursday from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. For more information, visit http:// www.ga454.org or call Lt Col Tom Berg at 678-457-3390 or Lt Col Charles Talley at 770-853-6617. page 5 Bright Side 14AUG WC CHICK-FIL-A DAY AT MUST In July, Chick-fil-A and MUST ministries teamed up for what proved to be a very special day. 5900 lunches were distributed throughout six north-metro counties. With the number of lunches provided and the number of CFA stores involved, this was an enormous undertaking - all went well. Chick-fil-A Owner/Operators from Cobb, Gwinnett, Douglas, Paulding, Cherokee, and Bartow counties participated in the MUST summer lunch program that day. The program is designed to feed thousands of local children each day throughout the summer who normally eat free and reduced cost lunches at school. During the summer, these children are at home with little or no food. It was a collaborative effort between local Chick-fil-A operators and MUST ministry. The kids had no idea That Chick-fil-A was going to be served that day. For Chick-fil-A Day, instead of sack lunches, the children received a packed Chick-fil-A lunch consisting of a hot Chickfil-A sandwich, a bag of chips, a cookie, and a juice box. The CFA teams in North Cobb reached a total of 1,330 children and surprised the children not only with a Chick-fil-A meal, but also with a interactive time to play and pose for pictures with the Chick-fil-A cows. What turned out to be a day honoring the kids, actually turned to be a bigger blessing to everyone who participated from Chick-fil-A.. The home is used temporarily for women and children trying to get back on their feet after being victimized by domestic violence. The women come to the YWCA of Northwest Georgia to start a new life free of domestic violence. They forge ahead with the wonderful help of the YWCA with counseling, a safe place to live and workshops to get them into the work force and build their self-esteem. This project under the leadership of both clubs was part of a joint $30,000 grant awarded to the YWCA to help with their transitional housing and apartments. The screened porch was gutted and re-framed on this warm morning and with future construction days this porch will get a proper ceiling, new sides and screens with lighting and a fan. Club members also power washed the front deck, pruned the shrubs, weeded and spread fresh pine straw to give the front of the house a clean and finished look. In the process, a side concrete porch was discovered. It was an area that had been neglected and hidden for years. The perimeter of the property was cleared of weeds and small scrub trees. Enjoy Bluegrass music with the Cherokee Cut Ups, delectable treats from the Food Trucks, Dachshund Races, the Kid Zone with lots of fun activities for all ages, and the Pet Parade and costume contest. Parking and admission are free. Over 60 vendors will showcase their wares. We have something for everyone, from Harley Davidson and Luxury Cars to artisans and entertainment! Be sure to take Fido to the Bone Bar, where nearly 4000 pounds of dog treats are available for you to scoop – and they’re free! Looking for a new family member? Visit the eight Rescue groups who will have furry friends of all sizes just waiting to meet you. Bring a chair to set up along the parade route, and settle in to watch Jr. Miss Cobb County, Carley Jaymes Vogel, lead off the parade with a full court of Princes and Princesses, and dogs, in full regalia and competition. The parade route winds through the park, past the Grandparents’ grandstand at Winwood, and ends at the Pavilion, where prizes will be awarded. Categories include Look Alike, School Spirit, What the Woof?, In the Movies, Naked Dog (no costume)and finally, The People’s Choice Award. This award goes to the canine with the most “Likes” on Facebook, so if your fur baby doesn’t do well in a crowd, they can still participate online! Post a pic of your dog on the Marietta Mutt Strutt Facebook page, in costume - or not, and get busy sharing. The one with the most ‘Likes’ wins! The event is being held to support and raise awareness of Sweetwater Mission, a nonprofit that has been helping families with food, clothing, job training and more since 1968. On average 2 tons of food is given out every day! Plus free clothing. There is a new program for those that were formerly chronically homeless. This new artisan program will be a feature at the event. Beautiful handcrafted items will be for sale made by the program participants. Vendor information and dog parade registrations can be found on the website at www. SweetwaterMission.org. or you can call Linda Oviatt at 770-241-4302 for more information. The redesign of the House of Lu started over a year ago, as Cassandra Buckalew, Cindy Lu Tam and Johnny Tam, poured over designs, ideas, took field trips, and dreamed. And then the new design was done. In one short month the creative team of the refurbishing of House of Lu totally gutted the interior and did a rebuild - that is beyond any one’s imagination and more. The elegant look is reminiscent of fine dining anywhere. The original House of Lu was opened 18 years ago by Peter and Cindy Lu, with a ribbon cutting that included Mayor Ansley Meaders and Councilman Philip Goldstein. (See photo below). The Lu’s family’s passion for food and cooking is what started it all. Since 1995, they have served Lu’s original recipes at the original House of Lu. The Lu family are the original owners of the “ House of Lu”. No other “LU” locations are affiliated with the Lu Family. Along with the refurbishing of the restaurant “Mama Lu” (Cindy Lu) has added original Vietnam recipes to the menu. Cindy Lu Tam advises that the family is Chinese, but grew up in Vietnam. With almost 3 decades of experience in the restaurant business, they proudly preserve their passion for food with their family’s recipes. They care and use the finest, freshest ingredients when serving your lunch, dinner, parties, and catering needs. Members of the Marietta Business Association, staff from the City of Marietta and family and friends were on hand when the House of Lu held their ribbon cutting on Thursday, August 7 to celebrate their grand re-opening. People were truly amazed at the transformation. The House of Lu is located in the historical district of Marietta Square, behind the Strand Theatre at 89 Cherokee St., Marietta, GA. For reservations call 770-794-8831. Dine in or delivery. Catering is available for your next family gathering or party. Let them know how their family can serve you best. Eat more healthy Chinese food. A great big thank you from the Lu family. From concept to actual! Thank you Cassandra Buckalew Interiors!! For starters, we’re about to bring 350 existing jobs – and soon another 400 or so new ones – to Cobb County, thanks to the hard work of the economic-development team at Cobb’s Competitive EDGE and all those who support it. Telecommunications firm Vonage Business Solutions is currently located in Midtown but will be moving its offices to 80,000 square feet in Wildwood Plaza in Cumberland. The move is planned for later this summer. Next, let’s take a look at taxes, because there’s good news there, too. Our tax digest, which reflects our overall tax base, is up by 5.18% over last year. Sincere thanks go to Steve White, our director/chief appraiser; the employees of both the tax assessor and commissioner’s offices; and to Cobb Information Services, for the hard work that goes into compiling all the necessary data to complete the tax digest. And finally, it’s something we already know here in Cobb County, but business news network CNBC finally got the numbers it wanted to name Georgia the top state in the U.S. for business. In its annual poll, Georgia rose quite a bit from last year’s eighth place to nab 1,659 out of a possible 2,500 points in multiple categories. Our top category rankings: •1st place, for the third time in a row, for an educated, non-union workforce •1st place for infrastructure, with points for our air and sea ports •3rd place for economy, with points for job growth and a rebounding housing market Georgia has always placed in the top 10 in this CNBC survey, but No. 1 is a nice place to be. If you are enrolled in a Medicare health plan, you know that you don’t need to sign up with Medicare each year. However, each year you will have a chance to review your coverage and make changes. Medicare Health Plans and Prescription Drug Plans can change their costs and coverage each year. Many insurance carriers offer Medicare products. Their monthly premiums, out of pocket expense, prescription drug formularies, cost-sharing co pays, and physician/ hospital networks can change every year. And with these changes comes a lot of confusion each year! That’s where Jerry Bohus comes in. As an Independent Agent with Provident Group, Jerry Bohus can help guide you through the “Medicare information overload”! Here is how, as an “independent agent”, Jerry can help you: He doesn’t represent one insurance carrier. This enables him to get to know you over a cup of coffee and uncover exactly what your personal needs are, both medically and financially. He understands these plans. He can then cut through the clutter and place you in a plan that really fits your needs! If you were to ask “What is the best plan?” his answer would be “There is no best plan, only the best plan for you!” New to Medicare? There are two different options to “supplement” your original Medicare Parts A and B. There are very big differences between a Medigap and a Medicare Advantage insurance plan. Each of the 10 types of Medigap policies is standardized by law – meaning the benefits of each are the same, regardless of which insurer sells it. But insurers charge very different premiums for the same plan. Medicare Advantage policies are private health plans. In Georgia, there are 23 HMO’s, 20 PPO’s and 46 PFFS Medicare Advantage plans. As an independent agent, Jerry Bohus can assist you in finding the Medicare option that is best for you. You can reach him at 770.499.2040 or his office at 2655 Dallas Highway, Suite 130 (next to Target). Marietta, 30064. Whether you are going to Pre-K for your first year or Elementary for your last year, or for your only year at 6th Grade Academy or entering Middle or High School, or your Freshmen year at the university or you last year in Graduate School, it’s that time of year when we all begin again. Some of you are real excited; others of you are little unhappy that summer is over so soon. Or you may be feeling a little bit nervous or even scared about going to school because of the many new things you will be facing. You will be having new principals, teachers, some new friends, but remember some of your old friends will be their to greet you too. On the first day of class, your teacher will probably aske you some questions to see how much you already know. When the teacher asks that question to which you do know the answer, you will be waving your hand excitedly in the air saying, “I know!, I know!” It’s a great feeling to know the answer isn’t it? And it sure helps take away those “back to school jitter.” In Matthew 16:15-16 (NIV), the disciples are going “back to school” just like you. Can you guess who their teach is? Right! Jesus is the teacher! Jesus often took his disciples aside to teach them important lessons about the Kingdom of God. This was one of those days. Jesus began his lesson that day by asking his disciples a question. “Who do you say that I am?”, Jesus asked. I imagine that one of the disciples raised his hand excitedly just like you and said, “I Know!, I Know!, some people say that you are John The Baptist.” Then another of the disciples raised his hand and said, “I Know!, I Know! you are Elijah. A third disciple raised his hand and said, “Some people say that you are Jeremiah or one of the other prophets.” “Very good,” Jesus said, “that is what other people are saying, but who do you say that I am?” You know what, I think Peter was so excited that he forgot to raise his hand. I think he just called out to Jesus, “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.” Jesus said, “You are right, Peter. You didn’t learn that from listening to other people. It was taught to you by my Father in heaven.” So as the School Bells Ring Again for you this August, I pray that the lesson that the disciples learned that day may just as important for you as it was then. Remember, many people in our world, in your community, in your school still do no know who Jesus is. You and I need to be ever ready with the answer, “He is the Christ, the Son of the Living God!“ May our children, youth, young adults, parents, teachers, administrators have the very best year ever as you continue to walk in the footsteps of Jesus! Our Student Ministry interns planned a great week at our lake retreat at Lake Allatoona. The unexpected happened. The camp venue needed to changed to accommodate more students. We went from plan A to plan B, having camp at the Family Life Center of the church, allowing easier access for worship and activities on a day-to-day basis. It was a good plan B! Plan B included going to the lake property on Tuesday, with tons of water activities. Then plan C then took shape because of a fire at the lake property. So the interns came up with plan C, which was to utilize a church member’s lake house, provide water activities and have a cookout. This plan C ended with a wonderful worship on the top of their lake dock. On Thursday, plan B was to white water raft at 10:45 a.m. The church buses broke down in Ellijay, plan C took place. The church staff brought us another bus from Marietta. We were able to white water raft at 3:00 p.m. A surprise to this plan C was that the bus stopped in the parking lot of Ellijay Seventh Day Adventist Church. Their facilities staff opened up their seven-acre pond with swings, docks and picnic tables. Much better than sitting a church parking lot for two hours. It was a wonderful day. Life does not work out the way we plan. Stuff happens. In the midst of stuff we have a choice to find God in the unexpected or have a melt down and quit. We need a plan B! God is in plan B through infinity. First Baptist Church Marietta is located at 148 Church St., Marietta, GA 30060. Visit www.mariettafbc.org or call (770) 424-8326 for more information.
