Walk Safely to School Day
This Friday 22nd May it is 'Walk Safely to School
Day'. Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD) is an
annual, national event when all Primary School
children will be encouraged to walk and commute
safely to school. It is a Community Event seeking
to promote Road Safety, Health, Public Transport
and the Environment. Children will be encouraged
to participate in this activity through
announcements and lessons.
Primary Writer’s festival
Students from Epping North PS went to the
Riverside Theatre to take part in the Primary
Writer’s Festival. This was a fantastic opportunity
for our students to engage with their favourite
authors, discover exciting new voices and be
inspired in a fun, educational and interactive day.
In these sessions, writers and illustrators read and
performed their work, they talked about their craft
and took questions from the audience. Students
thoroughly enjoyed this opportunity with many
taking home novels and books signed by the
author. Thanks you to Miss Haywood for
organising this excursion for our avid readers and
writers.
Paper Planes
Today students in Stage 2 have participated in an
incursion with Dylan Parker from paper pilots. The
movie Paper Planes was based on the real life
experiences of both Dylan and James Norton.

Paper plane construction encourages student’s creativity and critical design skills. It complements the year 3
and year 4 curriculum. Thank you to Mrs Barnett for organising this wonderful experience for Stage 2
students.
Storm Boy
4A and 4C were extremely lucky last Friday to attend a Wharf Street theatre production of Storm Boy. It was
a thoroughly enjoyable excursion which enabled students to connect more deeply with the story of Storm
Boy. Thank you to Mrs Bareham and Miss Corbett for their organisation.
Zone Cross Country
Good luck to all our students representing Epping North PS in the Zone Cross Country carnival this
Wednesday 20 May. We wish all competitors well and thank Ms McLean, Miss Corbett and all parents for
supporting the team.
Thank You
Thank you to Mr Lauff and all the mums and dads for working on the upcoming P & C disco this Friday night.
I know all students enjoy these evenings and they are simply not possible without the dedication of parents
who volunteer their time.
Reports
As a school we have decided to return to including individual grades for English. Grades will be included for
speaking and listening, reading and viewing, writing and representing. Our teachers are conducting midyear
assessments now and will be able to give a more current picture of your child’s development shortly. All
parents wishing to speak to their child’s teacher should schedule an appointment directly with the teacher.
National Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD)
All schools are required to participate from 2015 in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School
Students with Disability (the national data collection) is an annual collection that counts the number of school
students with disability and the level of reasonable educational adjustment they are provided with. Please see
the information attached later in this newsletter for a more comprehensive understanding of the national data
collection process.
Front Office Refurbishment
We have negotiated and hope to complete a small refurbishment of the office area. This refurbishment is
aimed to improve and modernise our reception area. Work is projected to begin this term. I will communicate
any adjustments we need to make to the office area as a result of building work when I have received a start
date. Jo Wilcher Principal
SCHOOL NEWS
Walk Safely To School Day – Friday 22nd May 2015
It’s that time of the year when our school starts talking about walking! Walk Safely to School Day asks that we
all consider our transport habits and try to incorporate more walking as part of a healthy, active way to get
around. And although walking all the way to school may not be realistic for some of us, you can easily figure
out how to build walking into a part of your daily routine.
You can teach your child the healthy habit of walking more by:
-Walking with them the whole way to school
-If they catch the bus or train, walk past your usual stop and get on at the next stop
-If you have to drive, park the car a few blocks away from the school and walk with your child the rest of the
way
Regular exercise with your child not only helps them (and you) beat chronic problems like obesity, heart
disease, behavioural and mental health issues and diabetes. It also provides a great opportunity for you to
teach your children about the safe ways to behave around roads and traffic.
Active kids are healthy kids, so start planning your Walk Safely to School Day journey for Friday the 22nd
May!

EVENTS NEWS
ENPS School Disco - Saturday 23rd May
The 2015 school disco is fast approaching, and kids can look forward to a fantastic show this year from DJ
Andy. This year, we have a themed event where kids can come dressed up as their favourite superstar or
superhero and walk the red carpet This year, kids can get funky glitter hair spray on entry, all get a drink and
snack mid-disco, and following the disco will all get a drink and sausage/hot dog as well as use of the
awesome jumping castle that will be set up for the night. Great value for money and a load of fun for the
kids ......
Printed ticket order forms were sent home with every child in the school, but if you have not seen one come
home, or would like additional ones, hard copies are available in the school office. To order your tickets,
please return your completed order forms along with your cash payment to the ENPS events box in the
school office.
This year, you also have the ability to pay online by credit card, which almost half of you have taken up so far.
This can be done in the same place that online canteen orders are placed www.flexischools.com.au - either
log into your existing account or search for Epping North Public school and login as a guest - there is no need
to sign up for an account. Online orders can be accepted up to and including Friday 22nd May and you can
also pre-order a selection of glow products to avoid the queues on disco night.
Like everything, we are relying on the assistance of volunteer's to run the event. This year, we are aiming for
this to be the disco run by the dads. We already have 15 volunteers spanning both disco's, but if you want to
be involved and help out, there is always room for more. If you are free on Saturday 23rd between 5 and 8.30
pm, and would like to be involved - please contact us at enpsdisco@outlook.com to confirm your availability.
It is shaping up to be a great night !
Should you have any questions, feel free to contact us at enpsdisco@outlook.com.
Thank you for your continued support.

MISSING
Isabella from 6M has misplaced her school shoes. The last time she wore them was Wednesday 6th
May when she changed into her sport shoes for PSSA soccer tryouts in the K-2 girls bathroom.
They are black ROC lace up shoes, size 5 ("Larrikin" style).

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN DIFFERENT CULTURES?
World Education Program (WEP) is inviting you to experience another culture in your own home by becoming
a volunteer host family to an international student arriving in July 2015. Hosting exchange students gives
Australian families the opportunity to share their life and their culture with young international students for a
term, semester or year. July is fast approaching and our students can't wait to hear from a welcoming host
family they can call their own and learn about the place they will soon call home.
Hosting Is Fun! Request Student Profiles!
Getting to know your student before he or she arrives brings fun and joy to everyone involved. To help you
make this important decision, contact WEP today on 1300 884 733, info@wep.org.au or www.wep.org.au
to receive a full information pack for your family.

2015 information for parents and carers
WHAT IS THE NATIONAL DATA
COLLECTION?
The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on
School Students with Disability (the national data
collection) is an annual collection that counts the
number of school students with disability and the
level of reasonable educational adjustment they are
provided with.
The national data collection will count students who
have been identified as receiving an adjustment to
address a disability under the Disability
Discrimination Act 1992 (the DDA). The DDA can
be accessed from the ComLaw website at
www.comlaw.gov.au.
WHAT IS THE BENEFIT FOR MY CHILD?
The aim of the national data collection is to collect
better information about school students with
disability in Australia.
This information will help teachers, principals,
education authorities and families to better support
students with disability to take part in school on the
same basis as students without disability.
The national data collection is an opportunity for
schools to review their learning and support
systems and processes to continually improve
education outcomes for their students with
disability.
WHY IS THIS DATA BEING COLLECTED?
All schools across Australia collect information
about students with disability. But the type of
information currently collected varies between each
state and territory and across government, Catholic
and independent school sectors.
When implementing the national data collection,
every school in Australia will use the same method
to collect information. Therefore, a government
school in suburban Sydney will collect and report
data in the same way as a Catholic school in
country Victoria and an independent school in the
Northern Territory.
The information provided through the national data
collection will enable all Australian governments to
better target support and resources to benefit
students with disability. The data will help schools to
better support students with disability so that they
have the same opportunities for a high quality
education as students without disability.
WHAT ARE SCHOOLS REQUIRED TO DO
FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITY?
All students are entitled to a quality learning
experience at school.
Schools are required to make reasonable
adjustments, where needed, to assist students with
disability to access and participate in education free
from discrimination and on the same basis as other
students.
These responsibilities are outlined in the DDA and
the Disability Standards for Education 2005 (the
Standards). The Standards require educators,
students, parents and others (e.g. allied health
professionals) to work together so that students with
disability
can
participate
in
education.
The Standards can be accessed via the ComLaw
website at www.comlaw.gov.au.
WHAT IS A REASONABLE ADJUSTMENT?
A reasonable adjustment is a measure or action
taken to help a student with disability access and
participate in education on the same basis as
students without disability. Reasonable adjustments
can be made across the whole school setting (e.g.
ramps into school buildings), in the classroom (such
as adapting class lessons) and at an individual
student level (e.g. extra tuition for a student with
learning difficulties).
WHAT INFORMATION WILL BE
COLLECTED?
Every year your child’s school will collect the
following information for each student with a
disability:
•
•
•
the student’s level of education (i.e. primary or
secondary)
the student’s level of adjustment
the student’s broad type of disability.
The information collected by schools will be
provided to all governments to inform policy and

WHO WILL BE INCLUDED IN THE
NATIONAL DATA COLLECTION?
The definition of disability for the national data
collection is based on the broad definition under the
DDA.
details such as student names or other identifying
information will not be provided to local or federal
education authorities.
Further information about privacy is available from
www.education.gov.au/notices.
IS THE NATIONAL DATA COLLECTION
COMPULSORY?
For the purposes of the national data collection,
students with learning difficulties such as dyslexia
or auditory processing disorder as well as chronic
health conditions like epilepsy, diabetes or asthma,
that require active monitoring by the school, may be
included.
All
education
ministers
agreed
to
full
implementation of the national data collection from
2015. This means that all schools must now collect
and report information annually on the number of
students with disability in their care and the level of
adjustment provided to them.
WHO WILL COLLECT INFORMATION FOR
THE NATIONAL DATA COLLECTION?
Information about the arrangements that may apply
to your school in relation to this data collection is
available from your child’s school principal and the
relevant education authority or association of
impendent schools.
Teachers and school staff will identify the number of
students with disability in their school and the level
of reasonable adjustment they are provided based
on:
•
•
•
•
consultation with parents and carers in the
course
of
determining
and
providing
reasonable adjustments
the
school
team’s
observations
and
professional judgements
any medical or other professional diagnosis
other relevant information.
School principals are responsible for ensuring the
information identified about each student is
accurate.
HOW WILL MY CHILD’S PRIVACY BE
PROTECTED?
Protecting the privacy and confidentiality of all
students and their families is essential. Personal
Even if your child’s information is not included in the
national data collection, the school is still required to
provide support to your child with education needs.

of Data on School Students with Disability and how
it may involve your child.
