When we launched our website in 1997, I thought of it as an aside and a minor addition to our efforts
to promote the furniture. Today it is more as if this catalog and all else are supplements to the website.
Many people find us there first; pages of information are relatively easy to produce, update, and
disseminate. You can see much more information on design, construction, wood, finish, comfort, shipping, and many other subjects, as well as the archives of testimonials, on our website.
That said, a computer monitor is not so pleasing as ink on nice paper that you can hold in your hand.
I hope you find the furniture well displayed here. Visit the website or contact us for more information.
This is an unusual business for the times.
It is small and family owned. I work with my wife, son, and three other
artist-craftsmen in a shop we built. Together, we make furniture and send it to
people who are pleased and appreciative. Guests come and say we are living a
dream. When I look up, I see it.
This business serves an international clientele without distributors. The internet
has made our market the world. People searching for rocking chairs, comfortable
dining chairs, handmade trestle tables, and numerous other items and
descriptions find our site. Our design, materials, workmanship, guarantee,
service, and ratio of price-to-value stand out. “Repeat” and “word of mouth”
business sustain us. A catalog helps.
This furniture is made in the USA. For many, including us, this is important.
Our designs are original. This furniture is straightforward. If it is a chair, it is
comfortable. If it is a table, it is sturdy. And that is how they look. Function
secured, we shape line, form, and contour to animate light and shadow into
movement and grace.
We enhance art and handwork with the efficiencies of manufacturing. Wood is
a medium as well as a material. Using the color, figure, and character of the wood,
we create a unique composition within the form of each individual piece of
furniture. We carefully select, before we reverently cut. We use machinery and
organization to produce precision; we use handwork to create distinction.
We build furniture to the highest standards of craftsmanship. Because much of
the structure of our furniture is exposed, there is no place to hide less than
impeccable technique — our craftsmanship is evident. The joints fit and are
fitting. In the revealing reflection from the satin surface, the planes, edges, and
shapes show true to line, to curve, and to contour. The finish delights the hand as
well as the eye.
We heed the roots of our success. We serve our customers. We are loyal to our
suppliers. We provide flextime, unusual benefits, good working conditions,
profit-sharing, and open books to our employees. We recycle, reduce waste and
pollution, and compost the wood shavings and dust. All of our cherry, maple, and
mahogany lumber is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. We support
community and charitable efforts.
We ask people to purchase a product that will outlive them. Our patrons are
investors, not consumers. Our furniture is an asset to convey to heirs.

The Weeks Rocker is our signature piece. Since 1992, it has both anchored and
propelled this business. It serves people and families in every state, most
Canadian provinces, and in Europe, Asia, and Australia: nurturing the young,
relaxing the stressed, whetting the contemplative.

“The chair is wonderful. I must admit I was a little skeptical about some of the claims, but it fits me (5'11"),
my father (6'5"), and my mother (5'1") perfectly. The craftsmanship is top notch, the delivery process was great, and the
chair looks like it will be a wonderful addition to our lives. Thank you very much. Cheers,”

Natural Color
We do not stain our furniture.
Our hand-rubbed, oil finish
brings out the natural color
of the wood. Cherry (and
Mesquite and Mahogany)
become richer and darker over
time achieving a color and
depth impossible to produce
by staining.

“The chair arrived without damage and is magnificent! S. loved it from the start, and has barely gotten out of it since
coming back from the hospital on Tuesday with our baby boy. It is remarkable how soothing the rocking motion is both for
mother and baby, and she has dozed off numerous times with C. cradled comfortably in her arms.
B., Calgary, Alberta
Mortise and Tenon
The mortise is a hole or slot cut
into a piece of wood. The
tenon is a shape cut on the end
of an intersecting piece of wood
thatfits into the mortise. When
joined, the two pieces are interlocked, rigid, and secured.

TheWeeks Rocker in maple Acer saccharum
The maple in our furniture comes from Kane Hardwoods and is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.
The Weeks Rocker

“We love the rocker! The craftsmanship is remarkable; the design inspired. It is seemingly molded to one's body without a
pressure point to be found! You absolutely do not need a cushion.
G., Reston, Virginia
Finishing
We finish our furniture with multiple
coats of an oil and varnish mixture —
hand-rubbed. The finish penetrates the
surface, enlivening the grain, enriching
the color, and delighting the hand and
eye. (Tabletops receive an additional
protective top coating.)
5
TheWeeks Rocker in mesquite Prosopis spp.
Mesquite is a tree of the arid Southwest. It is usually found as a thorny shrub. Useable lumber is rare…and
beautiful. Our lumber is cut and selected by small mills in Texas.
The Weeks Rocker
in mesquite $3800
One thing I did not expect was for the chair to be so soft and touchable. I have never before experienced such incredible
smoothness in a sanding job; nor have I seen any craftsmanship glow the way this chair does!
S.P., Chicago, Illinois
Wood and Moisture
Wood serves to carry water from earth to sky. It has an affinity for moisture. Solid wood
in furniture changes dimension as the humidity of its location changes and water (usually
as vapor) flows in or out of the pores and fibers. Woodworkers ignore this dimensional
change at their peril. We test wood for its moisture content when we get it, and we control
the temperature and humidity of our storage, assembly, and finishing rooms so that the
wood in our furniture will be stable in its place of service.

L.H., Glenville, New York
Wood and Weather
Note the expansion joints in
this mahogany seat that is ready
to assemble and in the finished
rockers on the porch above.
Weather is hard on wood, the color gets grayer, the surface less
smooth. If wood is kept from direct rain and sun (covered porches),
the process is slowed greatly. The Weeks Rocker in Mahogany can
weather without coming apart. It is guaranteed for seven years when
used on the porch. For maintenance, we recommend washing the chair
every couple of years. It may be re-oiled if desired.

Dining Chairs, we believe, should:
• hold a human upright, alert, and in good posture.
• be comfortable for the duration of a long conversation.
• be light enough to move easily.
• be strong enough to withstand generations of daily use.
• be sensuous to touch.
• be beautiful, graceful, and sculptural.
To fulfill the above criteria we have developed our own set of techniques and design elements. Some are innovations
to long-standing traditions, some are adaptations, and some are adoptions. In total, they are a style.
So our chairs:
• are visually supple and fluid.
• provide lumbar support and encourage good posture.
• relieve the hipbones and hold your back against the lumbar support.
• have integral and artful compositions of wood figure within the form.
• have intersections and soft contours meeting in sculpted lines and edges.
• reveal their construction.
• play with light and shadow.
Dining chair test
If you would like to evaluate a dining chair, we will send one to you. You may sit in it and scrutinize it
for a few days. We will arrange for it to be picked up and returned, all at our expense.

How we design a chair
We design a chair by working from anatomy to sculpture. We build a “fitting booth.” We ask every
visitor to comment on the comfort and support provided for the purpose: for rocking, your body
should be supported, but relaxed; for dining, alert, in good posture. The lumbar curve and other
contours and dimensions are very different for these two activities. Guided by comments, “Too low,”
“More support here,” “I can feel that,” we adjust and fill in the curves. After responding to fifty or
so people, we have found an essential mean, comfortable to all...or nearly all.
Projecting the points found in the booth to the drawing board, I connect the dots and design the
structure, trying to give it some life. From the drawings, we build a prototype, again tested by many.
We make final adjustments and refine the form and surfaces.
This is a chart taken from data in the American Statistician (August,
2003. Vol. 56 No. 3.) illustrating the range of human heights.
The white squares represent women, the gray, men. The “x’s” and
half “x’s” represent, subjectively, the comments we hear that our
chairs (rockers and diners) are not an excellent fit. We lose a few
at the extremes, and a random couple in the middle, but
overwhelmingly we hear, “perfect”— hence, our guarantee and
offer of a test.
Using the color, figure, and texture of wood, the interplay of light and shadow, proportion, balance,
and mathematics, we reveal timeless principles of sculpture, architecture, and engineering — in a
simple chair.
11
Dining Tables
When lumber arrives at the shop, we look for boards of exceptional color, figure, and character, boards that
are particularly beautiful and coherent, boards that we would hate to cut up.
When someone orders a table, we choose boards from this “special reserve” and compose the top. When the
boards are joined, the seams almost disappear, but the heft and expression of individual, thick boards remain,
not to be confused with veneer.
Austin matching a top.
The grain on the table top is beautiful, and as you say,
it is difficult to see the seams where the boards are
glued together. I even went as far as to tape a piece of
twine from edge to edge, along the seams to expose
them. Still, there are areas where the grain of one
board flows so well into the grain of the next, that it
is quite impossible to follow any seam the entire length
of the table!
J.S., Long Beach, California
We build the five table designs shown on the
following pages, and to accompany a set of our
chairs, we build custom tables. Within practical
limits, the size of any table can be specified.
We can help determine size and shape.

Tre stle Ta bles
A trestle table is a simple concept, boards spanning uprights.
The Mitchell Table
Our Mitchell Trestle Table showcases select, thick boards. See the edge detail picture on page 14. Tables from
84" to 96" in length have three uprights at each end and one crossmember as shown in the photo(s) below.
Tables from 97" to 120" have four uprights and two crossmembers, as shown in the photo on the inside cover.

In some rooms, for some settings, a round tabletop on a pedestal base is best.

Leg-and-Apro n Ta bl e s
Tables of this type have aprons (sometimes called rails)
mortised into legs supporting overhanging tops. The tops
may be fixed or extension. Our catalogued versions of
these tables, the Paschall and the Phillips, have arched
aprons and one-inch thick tops with thumbnail edges.
The Paschall Table
Paschall Table with a fixed top, 42" x 84," in cherry with Williams arm chairs
The Paschall Table legs are turned round below
the mortises for the aprons. We work freehand at the
lathe. After turning, we carve away wood on the
remaining outside corner so that the profile curves out to
the largest diameter of the turning, giving a classic, yet
jaunty aspect to this line.
Fixed top Leg-and-Apron Tables
The grain of a fixed top table parallels the long dimension of the top. This orientation provides the most
dramatic display of figure. The prices for Paschall and Phillips Tables with fixed tops (up to 94" long) vary
from $1400 to $3900, depending on the size and the kind of wood. For prices, contact us or see the price
charts on the website: www.garyweeks.com
16
The Phillips Table
Our Phillips Table legs are tapered and contoured and scaled to their purpose. The surfaces of the legs are not
flat but gently curved to quicken the light and soften the touch. The larger the table, the larger we make the leg.
Phillips Table in cherry — shown without leaves at 43" x 66" with Wilson side chairs
Extension Top Leg-and-Apron Tables
The grain of extension top tables parallels the short dimension of the top, so the top can open to accept
the leaves. The drawings below illustrate our three “stock” sizes (A, B, and C). We can build other sizes
and configurations. The prices for Paschall and Phillips Extension Tables A, B, and C vary from $3200 to
$4900 depending on the size and the kind of wood. For prices, contact us or see the charts on the

Barstools
We have two barstool designs in two heights, 24" and 30". Please note where the
footrests appear to "grow" out of the legs and where the round tenons on the
tops of the legs penetrate the seats and are wedged.
The Berry Barstool
The Berry, having no back, is particularly suited for bars, islands, and counters, where an extension of the back
above the seat would obstruct the workspace and workflow, or where an extension of the back legs would
obstruct traffic.
These two stools show the difference
between a 30" seat height and a 24" seat
height and between new and aged cherry
(aged cherry on the right). The footrests
are adult-high on one side and kid-high on
the other.

The Heflin Barstool
A good bar stool with a back is more than a tall chair. We discovered that the height places greater demands on the
proportions and balance, that supporting your feet challenges the structure and changes relationships, that sitting
with your feet on a rail repositions the lumbar, that the back legs of a bar stool can easily get in the way, and more.
