It started as a volunteer project by two University of Southern Indiana students who were studying occupational therapy. They were looking to do a hands-on project and thought this might be an opportunity to both give back and practice what they have learned in fine motor skills. Every Tuesday at 4 p.m. Chelsea and Hana come to PEACE Zone and work with members to create a variety of beaded earrings and bracelets. They have also made a few necklaces. The funding to support the purchase of the beads and accessories came from grant funding. Chelsea stated, “I found out about the PEACE Zone through Beth Barchet (a board member) and we were looking to do a service project in the community. I have enjoyed working with the members. There are very creative members here.” time to view the pieces. They have been asking $5 for earrings and bracelets. They would make great Christmas gifts. Other items may be available to purchase too. Members have also been busy painting wooden birdhouses and decoupaging vases. The jewelry and art pieces are for sale with profits going to the PEACE Zone. If you have any old necklaces or beads that you would be willing to donate please contact us. Eventually it would be nice to set up an online site for selling homemade items, such as Etsy. For now if you are interested in purchasing any jewelry please contact 812.436.4320 to set up a In the zone P.U.T. ~ Pick Up Trash Service Activity On Thursday’s around our building and in the local community you may see some members of PEACE Zone picking up trash and cleaning the general area. Members participate in this service activity say it is a nice way to keep the community clean. PEACE Zone is a project supported by Southwestern Behavioral Healthcare, Inc. “The PEACE Zone is a nice place to be. It is a wonderful center to meet new friends and participate in a lot of activities. I hope you will come and see how great it is. There are always people here to talk with and things going on.” Sam McDaniel stated, “It makes you feel good to know that you are not polluting the air and keeping the public areas clean.” Mileage Club Members have been tracking how many miles they walk on the track at PEACE Zone since September and so far they have accumulated 44 miles! Pedometers were graciously donated by the Vanderburgh County Health Department for our members to use while walking. In Case of Severe Weather Please check 14 WFIE for closings. If EVSC (Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation) is closed, PEACE Zone will also be closed. Don’t forget our new hours!
