Furniture with soul. UNDERBARK Trees In our towns they stand above us, watching us grow up and live our lives, warmly and somehow approvingly, giving us shade and beauty and relief from summer’s heat. In the forests they form a private community, joining in chorus with the wind and birds with a quiet, peaceful strength as we pass beneath. 2 Creating wood furniture extends the already long life of what some would call the noblest life form on earth: trees. Wood has soul. I love shaping it into something that becomes part of a family. That contributes to the comfort and beauty of a living space. That passes from generation to generation, reminding us of our roots. Wood: Pliant. Permanent. Warm. Strong. Beautiful. Powerful. Full of soul. Underbark: furniture with soul. 3 Seating SIT. THINK. REST. A great chair defines great design. This is where form meets function, visual appeal coexists with utility. Underbark chairs are, like all of my furniture, made of North American hardwoods (primarily black cherry, but I can work with any wood you request) in a style I call “New Mission”—Arts and Crafts with a contemporary spin. At Underbark, I design every piece to blend comfort and function with visual proportion and appeal. I strive to create furniture you’ll want to be in and around for generations. 4 underbark 1. 3. 2. 4. 5. 6. 7. 1. High Back Chair detail 2. REFLECT. Tables provide us with surfaces for living. Whether for human activities or for display and placement of objects, tables provide a wonderful showcase for the natural, almost mystical beauty of wood. This is where my process comes to the fore. Careful selection of materials; honest, time-honored joinery techniques; expert finishing. Attention to the smallest of details brings real uniqueness and enduring value to my handmade furniture. When you see it, you’ll understand. Tables 6 underbark 1. 2. 4. 3. 7. 5. 6. 1. Traditional Quartersawn White Oak Coffee Table 28w 48l 16t 2. Traditional Mission Dining Table 42 x 84 x 29t 3. I try to create furniture that your grandchildren will cherish. 9 Case Goods STORE. DISPLAY. KEEP. Solid wood, solid construction. Handmade feel. Many of the pieces I create are for holding your possessions—whether clothing, books, dishware or audio-visual equipment—with style. Underbark wardrobes, bookcases and dressers make a beautiful statement in the space they inhabit, lending warmth and character to the room. On the practical side, I choose hardware that adds to utility and durability, matching the highest quality drawer slides, hinges and fasteners to specific use for smooth operation and long life. 10 underbark 1. 2. 4. 3. 6. 5. 1. Are yours scattered across the house or stored in boxes in the attic? Do you have a room, even a dining room or living room, that is underused? Have you always wanted a library, where all your books can have a comfortable home? Creating a library transforms a room. No matter where it is in the home, it creates a place of quiet, of warmth, of peace. My libraries are one-of-a-kind creations, custom built to fit the room and how you live, with care and attention to detail you can find nowhere else. 12 underbark libr ary built for a client’s vintage home in chicago. solid, l acquered bl ack cherry, stained to a deep walnut color. custom design integr ating shelv es, dr aw ers, cabinetry, drop-dow n desk a nd crow n molding. 13 Bedrooms RETREAT. SLEEP. DREAM. Your bedroom is the most personal of spaces, the last refuge from the outside world. Literally where dreams are born. Is there a better place for the one-of-a-kind nature of handmade furniture? I work closely with my customers to create just the right design for a bed, a dresser, a bedside table, a complete set—so the beauty from under the bark reflects their personal style; so the soul of the tree joins the soul of the living space. 14 underbark 2. 1. 3. 4. 6. 5. 7. 1. Because of my father’s work, our family lived in Europe during my childhood—I was schooled in the industrial arts in Germany and attended the London College of Furniture, graduating with a Furniture Craft Certificate in 1978. I founded Underbark in 1981. Today, I live and build furniture on nine acres of forest in northern Michigan. It’s my life’s work to make lasting and special furniture for the home, office or cottage. Contact me if you’re interested in working together or if you want to know more. —Paul W. Czamanske III 17 ORDERS DELIVERY I provide written confirmation of all orders, including design details, wood type, fabric, delivery and schedule. I require a fifty percent deposit at the time of the order. Because of the handmade nature of my furniture, time to complete an order can vary, ranging from two to six months depending on order size and backlog of work. I blanket wrap and personally deliver much of my furniture, installing and adjusting it as needed for clients. I can also ship to any location via truck freight, with costs billed in addition. CUSTOM WORK Although most clients order existing Underbark furniture designs, I can modify them to taste or need, or work from photos or rough sketches to create custom designs. I provide a quote before preparing a drawing for approval and proceeding with custom work. UNDERBARK WORKSHOP AND GALLERY I encourage clients to make an appointment and visit my workshop and gallery—weekdays, evenings or weekends. I have a sampling of many of the pieces in this catalog on display in the gallery, as well as lamps and other handmade items. Underbark is located one-third of a mile southeast of Glen Lake, at the corner of Fritz and West Burdickville Roads.
