Internal communications and staff engagement in
world-class universities
○ Higher Education and Tackling the Challenges of Communication
○ The New Face of Higher Education
○ IC Strategy
○ Define the Image, Strengthen the Brand
Universities are large, often devolved and rather messy organizations that refuse to comply with the rules of corporate companies, and don’t really do the ‘speaking as one’ thing. Staff may not always engage with teams outside
their own discipline area, and leaders often fail to communicate key decisions or draw on expertise from across the
institution. The challenges are manifest, but not insurmountable.
This will be an interactive, practical, and invigorating look at internal communications in higher education,
facilitated by Louise Simpson and Susie Baker.
Topics will include engaging staff in the university strategy, communicating brand and key messages, avoiding silos,
measuring and monitoring success, and telling good stories.
The workshop is designed for all staff in higher education institutions with a role to play in communications – either
at central or Faculty level. Case studies and exercises will ensure the session is both fun and informative.

Session 2
A common challenge faced by internal communicators is how to use metrics and data to prove that
communication campaigns and initiatives are having a direct impact on;
○ Strategic goals & campaigns ○ IC team effectiveness
○ Resourcing
○ Employee engagement
○ Collaboration
○ Brand value
○ Share Price
Often lots of strong data is collected but the tricky part can be distilling this output into outcomes which
demonstrate a clear impact on these business value drivers. Achieving success in this area should not be
underestimated – it takes time and thought to ensure that the right data is captured and then combined
effectively to prove value.
This session will provide you with some practical approaches to help generate an effective scorecard
which you can use to prove value to key stakeholders including;
○ The Importance of measuring – how do delegates current do this
○ Ways to collect data, deciding on frequency, and qualifying your data sources
○ Linking data to your KPIs & tips on how to structure
○ Mapping data into key subject area to provide real insight – how to make data tell a story
○ Ways to visualise data into an engaging scorecard or dashboard
