Dear Travelers,
As my European vacation draws to an end, I can’t help but contemplate all the places
still on my bucket list. The last two years have flown by so quickly! So many places
and so little time…. Since we don’t want you to leave without all your list checked off,
we have planned many of the must see destinations and events for this edition of the
Kiosk.
There is so much history here in Europe and it is important that we do not forget the
sacrifices made by those in WWI and WWII. We will reflect on the past with trips
to the Luxembourg American Cemetery, the Dachau Concentration Camp, Hitler’s
Eagle’s Nest, and the Memorial to the Nürnberg Trials.
Many of us hope to see world famous destinations such as Berlin, Prague, and Vienna,
so we have express trips planned to each so you can check them off your list! If you
suffer from Oenophilia (the enjoyment of wine), then you will certainly want to join
us as we explore the Veneto region of Italy and learn the history of Champagne in
Reims, France. Another experience unique to Europe is the Swiss Chocolate Train, and
we want to make sure you have a chance to enjoy this one. To prove that not all that
glitters is gold, we have arranged a special visit to the Swarovski “Kristallwelten.”
With so many treasures to choose from, we hope you will make Every Moment Count
and complete your bucket list!
Auf Wiedersehen und gute Reisen,
Desirae McCutchen

Volunteer Corner
USO Stuttgart is saying goodbye to a dear friend and Tours Manager, Desirae McCutchen,
as she departs for a new adventure in the states (boy, we will miss her)! That probably leaves
you wondering “Who will be responsible for planning the wonderful tours we’ve grown
accustomed to?” Lucky for us, transition is something we’re quite used to and the strength
of our team enables us to promote from within. Tiffany Emery, most recently the Programs
& Volunteer Coordinator for USO Stuttgart, will move “down the hall” to continue the
tours legacy. And so goes another question “Who will carry on the programs and volunteer
team to ensure USO Stuttgart is everywhere the community needs us to be?” It’s no secret
that USO Volunteers make what we do possible. Sometimes, we are able to provide an even
deeper opportunity where passion meets skill. We feel honored to welcome Nora Regan as
the new Programs & Volunteer Coordinator. At the end of the day, we hope you will see
little to no change overall other than having new contacts as they pertain to any questions
or interests you may have as a member of our community and/or volunteer team.
To contact Tiffany in Tours please email tour.stuttgart@uso.org and to
reach Nora for program or volunteer purposes, please email programs.stuttgart@uso.org.
With endless thanks for your support during my time in programs, Tiffany
With the upmost excitement for the future, Nora

USO Stuttgart, Your Home Away From Home
09 May, Saturday --- Luxembourg
We will begin our day with a tour through the American
Cemetery where General Patton is buried along with
5,076 other brave Americans. It is said that General
Patton’s grave is dramatically unique and we will find
out why during this tour. Just beyond, lay the resting
places of 10,914 German soldiers in the Sandweiler
German Cemetery which we will also visit. The dramatic
difference between the two resting places is something to experience. Granted, the
morning will be somber, but after our history lessons, we will head to the Capital
City of Luxembourg where dining, shopping, and sightseeing possibilities abound!
Here we will take a tour through time and space revealing 1,000 years of history; rated
“outstanding cultural itinerary” by the Council of Europe, the “Wenzel Walk” crosses
the famous Boch casemates, connects the upper and lower town, and offers amazing
views on the fortress ramparts. You’ll discover the “Bock” promontory, the Old Town,
the Wenceslas ring wall, the Alzette Valley, and Luxembourg’s unique fortifications.
Afterwards, you will have time to explore the city on your own. Perhaps a walk through
the historic Promenade or a nice relaxing lunch will hit the spot. Tour price includes
transportation, guided American Cemetery tour, Wenzel Walk, and USO Escort.

16 May, Saturday --- Dachau w/Jason Eilers
Since 1965, the Dachau Concentration Camp has been
deemed a memorial site. You’ll be overwhelmed as Jason
guides you through the grounds of Dachau, allowing you
plenty of time to experience the museum and visitor’s center.
Built in 1933, Dachau was the first Nazi concentration camp
(and was used as a school of sorts). Jason is with you to answer all of your questions
and provide in-depth knowledge of the camp and its history. We will then travel up the
road to Munich for a quick stop to eat lunch. You can eat at the famous Hofbräuhaus,
Hard Rock Café or just grab a fresh sandwich at the market. Tour price includes
transportation, city tour, and USO Escort. **Your tour to Dachau Concentration
Camp will be both moving and disturbing and is not recommended for younger
children.**

of the oldest active salt mines in the world. We will travel on mine wagons, slide into
the depths of the salt mine and boat across an emerald green subterranean lake. Then
we’ll take a breathtaking bus journey up the Kehlstein road and speed up the inside
of the mountain in a luxurious brass elevator...124 meters in 41 seconds! Perched on
a 6,000 foot mountain summit, Hitler’s “Eagle’s Nest” is a true feat of engineering,
and the views alone are worth the trip. Enjoy lunch (not included) at its modern day
restaurant or pack a picnic and spend some time enjoying the mountain. Tour price

Berlin has an amazing history…..its first historical appearance came in a 13th-century
document. It served as the capital of not only Prussia, but also the capital of the German
Empire after the unification of Germany, the Third Reich under Hitler, East Germany
during the communist era, and finally reunified Germany in 1990. Must-sees while in
Berlin: The Brandenburg Gate, remnants of the Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie, the
Reichstag, the Victory Column, and the New National Gallery...just to name a few! We
will see many of these during our guided city tour in the morning. Every year in early
summer, Berlin celebrates its cultural diversity with a giant street festival, Carnival
of Cultures. Costumes, dance, music, and over 300 market stalls are sure to keep you
busy! Tour price includes transportation, city tour, and USO Escort.

30-31 May, Saturday-Sunday – Veneto Wine Tradition
This is a fantastic weekend getaway designed
specifically for our adult travelers. We are
traveling to Veneto, where wine is ‘tradition’.
The lush green hills that surround Verona have
been the home of indigenous vines for over
2,000 years. During our two-day journey, we
will visit celebrated vineyards, each producing
their own specialties, with a chance to sample
wines and local cheeses. After a delicious and
inspiring day at the vineyards, we will spend our
evening in the heart of Verona, a romantic city that speaks to visitors with many
passions – history, architecture, shopping and cuisine … and, of course, the
enchanted story of Romeo and Juliet. After breakfast the following morning,
we will indulge in another wine-filled day in the Veneto countryside before
returning home feeling refreshed and connected to one of the greatest traditions
Italy has to offer. Tour price includes transportation, vineyard tours, lodging,

24 June, Wednesday --- Day in the Alsace
We are spending a whole day touring the Alsace region of France!
First, we are going to head over to Colmar, the last town in France
to be freed after the Second World War. On our way into Colmar,
you will see the Statue of Liberty! Well...it is only a replica, but
it was installed by the Municipality of Colmar to honor its
most prestigious artist, Auguste Bartholdi, the sculptor. After a
city orientation you will have plenty of time to explore the city
and enjoy a lunch on your own. Colmar’s old town is the main
attraction and is stunningly beautiful and well preserved. Be
sure to stop at the Musée Bartholdi; it is the house where he was
born and holds many of the original models of his masterpieces,
including the Statue of Liberty. There is even a part of the town named “Little Venice”
that you must visit to understand its exceptionality. While you are there make sure to
keep an eye out for the dates painted onto the side of buildings. You will discover many
of them date back to the 1300’s! After our time in Colmar, we will visit the HautKoenigsbourg Castle, where we will have a specialized guide to help us seek out its
unusual features and gain more insight to the architecture and daily life in the middle
ages. Tour price includes transportation, entrance and guided tour of the castle, city
orientation, and USO Escort. Tourist passports required.

Regensburg is one of the best preserved medieval towns in
Europe, with a numerous landmarks in the city center dating

completed under Emperor Marcus Aurelius, Regensburg
became the first and foremost capital of Bavaria-- the residence of dukes, kings and
bishops, and for 600 years an imperial free city. Outstanding features such as the Old
Stone Bridge and the cathedral date from this period in the middle ages. The history,
sights and landmarks are densely packed so the city can be easily discovered on foot.
After a guided walking tour there will be some free time to explore more on your own.
Tour price includes transportation, city tour, and USO Escort.
