President’s Message
Gord Kruger, Evergreen Club President
Greetings Everyone!.....I suppose you’ve all noticed that Spring is a lot like the Winter we just enjoyed. I seem to always
start off with a weather comment and I will again....”never been a winter like it”....a least not that I can remember, and
I’ve been here for a few.....who needed Arizona? Speaking of Arizona, I see a number of our Winter Travelers have
returned to the nest and I’m sure the remainder won’t be too far behind. We welcome them all back to the club.
We had a couple of very interesting guests at our March Committee meeting. Jane Murphy who is the CEO and President of
St Josephs Hospital spoke to the gathering on the long term future of St Josephs after our new hospital is completed
.

Hopefully the committee reps who attended will pass along some of the Jane’s
comments. I’m sure that seniors will have involvement in the future of St Joes.
Jennifer Pass of S.O.S (Support Our Seniors) was also in attendance and spoke to
us about SOS and it’s future involvement with the Evergreen Club. The mission of
SOS has always been to advocate for the provision of support that seniors, living
either in a facility or, with independence challenges in their own home, need to
have a good quality of life. Arabella Benson was also in attendance and spoke
to us about a new club called Life Long Learners. Arabella is the facilitator for the
club which meets the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month in the Rotary Hall
from 1 to 3. The club is designed to help and support members in their specific
goals. These could include the many challenges that we face daily as we age.
Things to watch for in April include the Evergreen Club Pancake Breakfast on
Saturday May 2nd. As normal it will be held in the Conference Hall from 7:30 to
11....and still the best bargain in town at $5pp. The Drama Club are presenting
“Picnic in 1915” in the Conference Hall on Wednesday April 22nd and Thursday
April 23rd. Wednesday is a matinee performance at 1:30pm and Thursday is an
evening performance at 7pm. Friday Night Dances in April are on the 17th with
Crosstown Express on the 23rd with the Dan Hughes Band.
Don’t forget that it is Courtenays 100th this year and many great things will be
happening around town as the year progresses. If you have any last minute
candidates for “Citizens Of The Century” awards, they must be into City Hall by
March 31st. Volunteers will be recognized with this award for their outstanding
contributions over the years...but they must be nominated....and that’s where
you come in. We have many great people here within the Evergreen Club who
deserve recognition with this award.....please get your last minute nominations
in by March 31st.
And let’s not forget our own Jo Johnson who was the March “Evergreen Volunteer
of the Month”. Congratulations Jo!! There is a great write up about Jo in the
March issue of the newsletter.
And remember this...”Your value doesn’t decrease based on someone’s inability
to see your true worth”....Adios my friends!!

Friday Night Dances
We hope you enjoyed looking at the
photographs of Ropes on the Lounge
Wall in March. Lots of votes which is
very gratifying. I am writing this too
early to declare your winner. The topic
for the Wall in May is Whimsical! We
have continued to look at the set of
DVDs that Joel Sartori has produced.
He is a class photographer who
works for the National Geographic
Magazine, so you know the quality
is there. Our topics have included
Low Light photography, Landscapes
and Wildlife. We follow each session
with an exercise based on the topic.
In connection with the third we are
going on a photoshoot to the Raptor
Centre in Duncan to practice what we
learnt. We also had a photoshoot to
Elk Falls where we saw work on the
really massive project to build a new
(underground) power station with a
new water feed from the lake using
a tunnel currently being bored from
close to the Dam. When all this is
finished the old water pipes will vanish
as they reclaim the land and you won’t
see the new power station. Excellent
Information Centre at a new car park
which leads to new paths with new and
better views of Elk Falls. For the brave
there is a new suspension bridge over
the river that is under construction. As
usual we meet first and third Tuesdays
at 1.00 p.m. in the Soroptimist Lounge
with a special Lightroom Workshop at
noon. All are more than welcome to
join an ever increasing membership. If
everyone comes at the same time we
would need a new room.
Robin
Spring has definitely sprung! What
lovely weather we’ve been enjoying. I
know our singing has been enjoyable
too. March’s songs were great and
loved by all who sang and listened.
We sure are a wonderful group and
gaining new members is just terrific.
Always room for one more! Hope
the flu bug has taken off so we won’t
be missing singing to our friends
in Retirement Homes. As always,
we meet Friday mornings from 10 –
11:30 am and as always, everyone is
welcome!

Friday Night Dance at the Filberg
Centre in Courtenay. It has been a
privilege as a volunteer to meet all of
you at these dances during my “Four
Year Holiday” in The Comox Valley.
Returning to Alberta with such
wonderful memories makes me
think of how bygone experiences
throughout
Our lives are brought back with a song
or tune played by those extra special
entertainers to make even more
special memories for us during our
Experiences on a Friday Night. For
those who don’t attend regularly, or
who never have been to one of these
dances think again, just walking in the
door makes a person
Feel happy. The coffee, tea and cookie
breaks are an extra chance to socialize,
followed by the fun of waiting to see
who will win the spot dance prize,
Not to mention the special dates,
such as Valentines, St. Patricks Day,
Hallloween, to mention a few when
we get the chance to DRESS UP or
NOT.
Some people find it physically difficult
to dance, so they come to hear the
singers and fabulous music and meet
the best people, especially the one
and only
Mary! I truly will miss all of those lovely
people that COME TO THE DANCES.
Sincerely
Sandra (as in Sandra and Mary)

Can you believe this weather? What
more can I say?
Our Club meets monthly, and usually
starts with a timely topic, or we have
a round table discussion where
everyone has a chance to air their
questions, grievances or praise for
our PC’s. This is a most informative
and helpful time, as there is always a
tidbit learned, that we didn’t know
previously.
We welcome all,
novice or
experienced PC users. Our only
requirement is a current Evergreen
Club membership and a $1.00 dropin fee.

Table Tennis
Doesn’t everyone feel so much better
when Spring is coming? We are so
fortunate to play indoors as these are
few cancellations. This sport enable
us to get our required steps per day,
but most of all, we use our L & R side
of the brain which is why it is so highly
recommended for seniors. We play
on Monday at 11:30am – 1:30pm
and on Tuesday 12:30 – 4:00pm.
Necessary equipment is supplied
and you only pay .75 cents per day.
Cumberland is hosting “Empire

I can only exclaim, how fortunate
we are to live on the West Coast of
Canada. I find I can’t brag about
how great we have it, as those in
the Eastern part of our country have
suffered through a dreadful winter.
Our Club members are having so
much fun playing and singing their
way through so many familiar songs.
We are a group of non-judgmental
novice and experienced players alike.
When Mom told us practice makes
perfect, you will find that still applies.
Sessions start with simple tunes and
chords, and the last 45 minutes is
dedicated to tunes with chords that
are a bit more complicated. We view
the music from a screen, so no papers
are necessary. Our songs are sent to
us via email, ahead of time, so we get
a chance to practice at home.
We do have a loaner ukulele, that you
may try before you purchase. You
can take it home as well to practice,
and see if this is something you might
like to do. Our only requirement is a
current Evergreen Club membership
and a $2.00 drop-in fee.
For more information you may contact
Howie at wonghowie@shaw.ca, or
Terry at comoxterry@gmail.com. Feel
free to drop in on one of our sessions

VOLUNTEERS
VOLUNTEER
OF THE MONTH
Sharlene Coulter
A QUALITY VOLUNTEER!
What a delight it was to sit down and talk with Sharlene Coulter, our April
Volunteer of the Month. Sharlene joined us back in December 2011. Her
husband had passed and she had to keep herself busy. She started right away
volunteering in the kitchen. 6 months later she joined the kitchen committee;
a group of kitchen volunteers that menu plan and address the needs of the
kitchen. “I do all the positions required in the kitchen. I’m not tall enough
though to see the pies well on the top shelf.” She laughs, “If there’s a lemon
meringue in front of a fruit pie I can’t see it!” You’ll also find Sharlene taking
orders at our legendary Evergreen Club pancake breakfasts. Sharlene is thought
of so highly in her volunteerism. Words like ‘high quality,’ ‘work ethic’ and
‘dedication’ sum it up.
When Sharlene first joined the Evergreen’s she also got involved with the Meet
& Greet Singles Club. “But, I went out and got myself a partner. So, I got kicked
out.” She laughs, “They said I was welcome to keep coming though. Kind of
like an honorary member.” Sharlene also loves the mystery trips through the
Evergreen Club and the various travelling opportunities. A couple of years
ago she took a guided trip that was offered to Cuba. She like it so much she
went again! She mostly travels now to Maui and enjoys 6 weeks there every
year. Outside of the Evergreen Club, she keeps busy with the volunteer service
organization ‘the over 40 Kintettes’, her Westie ‘Muppet’ and last but not least
her new husband Jim (they got married last September!)
Here are a couple of quotes from her peers in the Evergreen Kitchen:
“I am happy Sharlene has won Volunteer of the month. She is always ready to
help anyone who needs it, she’s enthusiastic about what needs to be done in
the kitchen, she just rolls up her selves to do the job, and she always has the
nicest smile!” Ann Vincent
“Always jolly and liked by all her co-workers. We love to have volunteers like her.
“Bill Slaughter
