ABOUT EVERGREEN (FORMERLY EWVIDCO)
EVERGREEN STAFF
Evergreen is a membership organization that champions
manufacturing, creative production, and industrial
service businesses in North Brooklyn and beyond. We
connect businesses with resources and opportunities
to help create and maintain high quality jobs at all skill
levels.
In 1982, a handful of local business owners worked with
St. Nicks Alliance to create Evergreen, then known as
EWVIDCO, to revitalize East Williamsburg by attracting
new businesses, providing business assistance to
existing firms and grow overall job opportunities in the
neighborhood. Initially, Evergreen worked to achieve its
mission of economic development by addressing the
high crime and poor sanitation affecting the area and
serving as a liaison to government offices.
Currently, Evergreen manages the Greenpoint/
Williamsburg and North Brooklyn Industrial Business
Zones and the North Brooklyn Empire Zone. Through the
NYC Industrial Business Zone (IBZ) program, Evergreen
is responsible for meeting the business service needs of
more than 1,000 industrial businesses in the Greenpoint/
Williamsburg and North Brooklyn Industrial Business
Zones and Ombudsman Zones. These businesses,
which employ over 15,000 residents, depend on
Evergreen for free, quick and reliable assistance with tax
credits, incentives, financing, real estate and relocation
assistance, energy and green issues, workforce needs,
and advocacy.
Evergreen provides these services in concert with
public agencies (NYC Department of Small Business
Services, NYS Empire State Development Corporation,
NYC Workforce One Centers) nonprofit organizations
(New York Industrial Retention Network, Industrial and
Technical Assistance Corporation, St. Nicks Alliance,
Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow) and community
organizations (Community Board 1 in Brooklyn, where
an Evergreen staff member sits as a voting member).

SALTY ROAD
THE JAM STAND
Salty Road was born in the summer of 2011, when
founder Marisa Wu pulled her very first batch
of salt water taffy. Friends on the boardwalk in Far
Rockaway had sought in vain for locally-produced
taffy, and Marisa--then working for all-star Brooklyn
confectioner Liddabit Sweets--decided to take matters
into her own hands. The vanilla taffy she made that day
was the best she’d ever tasted--creamy like a milkshake,
deeply flavored and flecked with real vanilla beans and
a distinct salt crystal crunch. The Jam Stand is Brooklyn’s happiest food company. It
began in an apartment kitchen in Williamsburg when
best friends Jessica Quon and Sabrina Valle set out
to create a food company that was a true reflection
of themselves and their community. By combining
unique flavors, Jessica and Sabrina give their products
an imaginative personality and allow their “Jam Fans”
to take initiative and get creative in their own kitchens.
The girls base it all on their
belief that packaged food doesn’t have to mean
processed food.
Since then, we’ve created every new flavor using only the
best natural fruit purees, freshly ground spices and pure
extracts--all with that signature sea salt crunch. The
chewy treats are packaged in a beautifully giftable
box, and Salty Road taffy has been hailed by
publications including The Wall Street Journal, New York
Magazine and Martha Stewart Weddings. The Jam Stand met Evergreen through the Small Food
Producer’s Network Event at the Brooklyn Kitchen.
Evergreen was able to help The Jam Stand secure two
rounds of financing. First Evergreen connected The
Jam Stand with Accion to secure a loan to purchase
inventory and improve cash flow and later in the year
Evergreen staff worked with Sabrina to put together
financial projections that helped secure an additional
$100,000 in funds from investors.
From that first batch of taffy in Marisa’s kitchen,
Salty Road has expanded quickly, shifting strategies to
meet increasing demand. Beginning as a one-person
operation in a shared kitchen space, we brought on more
help, then outsourced production to larger candy makers
in Massachusetts and Maine before outfitting our very
own candy factory here in Brooklyn. With the help of a
Kickstarter campaign and financing obtained through
Evergreen, NYBDC, and Accion East we are now happily
churning out taffy using the same 1940s-era pulling
and wrapping machines we coveted at our co-packers’
facilities! We are so proud to have brought our production
home, and look forward to continuing to continuing to
grow right here in Brooklyn!
More than an artisan food company, The Jam Stand
is an experiment in positive engineering. From local
markets to grocery stores to online sales, every
encounter the customer has with The Jam Stand is
jovial – which is how the products are designed from
the ground up. Meticulous detail and thought are put
into each element that comprises The Jam Stand and
the sum of those parts is meant to make you smile!

TRI-MAR/SOHO ART MATERIALS
LUCKY’S REAL TOMATOES
Marvin Siegel opened TriMar in Brooklyn more than 25
years ago manufacturing custom made stretcher bars
for professional artists and galleries. In 1996 he saw
the need for unique, high-quality artists’ supplies and
expanded his business, opening SoHo Art Materials
in the East Village. SoHo Art Materials stocks high
quality, hard-to-find materials not carried by other
suppliers, and offers personalized service including
custom stretching, framing and delivery. For many
area artists, SoHo Art Materials is the go-to source in
the city.
Lucky’s Real Tomatoes has been a family owned
Brooklyn business for over 30 years. Tony Marcelli
and the Marcelli family founded the business in 1979
after moving to Florida where they quickly learned
to appreciate the fresh, seasonal tomatoes that were
not available In NYC. Tony developed the idea to bring
these flavorful tomatoes to NYC during the winter
months, where the demand for the year-round supply
quickly grew at the request of New York’s finest chefs.
Lucky’s Real Tomatoes specializes in American, FieldGrown, Sun-Ripened, flavorful tomatoes and supplies
hundreds of restaurants, both in NYC and across the
country. Many prominent restaurateurs such as Danny
Meyer, Daniel Boulud, Jean Georges Vongerichten, and
restaurants such as Peter Luger Steakhouse, The
Palms, The Waldorf Astoria, Le Bernardin, Il Mulino,
Rosa Mexicano and the Shake Shacks have used Lucky
Tomatoes for many years. Lucky’s Real Tomatoes
are also distributed nationwide by top foodservice
distributors and are available in gourmet grocers such
as Eataly, Gourmet Garages, Agata, Westside Markets
and many more.
Needing more space for new product development and
production, Marvin came to Evergreen for help with
his expansion plans. He decided to build a second
floor onto his existing factory in Bushwick but wasn’t
sure the zoning would allow it. Evergreen helped by
contacting the city and got the answers he needed to
begin his expansion. Evergreen also assisted Marvin by
helping him apply for incentive programs such as the
Industrial Commercial Incentives Program (ICAP) and
the Energy Cost Savings Program (ECSP). “Evergreen
has been a wonderful resource for our business,” says
Marvin. “They have helped with our expansion project
from beginning to end and continue to provide us
support.” The expansion is now complete and TriMar
has a new state-of-the-art factory store that will allow
the company to continue to expand the business and
create more community jobs.
Lucky’s Real Tomatoes is deeply committed to giving
back to the city that helped launch their business
through their relationships with City Harvest, Food
Bank, James Beard House , City Meals on Wheels and
numerous charitable organizations. Even though their
company sustained $1.5 million in damages to their
facility from Hurricane Sandy, Lucky’s pitched in by
transporting and donating food and household goods
to those in need.
