Kislev-Tevet 5773 December 2012
Chanukah is coming!
Chanukah can be a beautiful symbol of light dispelling the darkness.
In every life, there is a certain amount of darkness. Whether one is a baby and is dealing with an
uncomfortable wet diaper; or whether one is graduating college and is unsure of their direction in life; or
whether one is faced with an illness and is struggling; all of us encounter darkness in our lives.
And yet, while a certain amount of darkness is a natural part of life, there can also be incredible lights. There
are wonderful moments where we can feel connected, uplifted, and full. There are moments where we can
connect deeply with another person, and there are moments when we can encounter the Divine.
One of the spiritual challenges of life is to continue turning toward the light.
This is not always an easy task, and indeed, sometimes the darkness can consume us. Our mind can be
consumed with fears, uncertainties, and doubts. Sometimes even our physical discomfort can be
overwhelming.
While it is certainly important to acknowledge the hardships of life, it is also very important to pay attention
to the light. Sometimes, we will literally have to force ourselves to get up and shift our attention to
something else. Other times, friends and loved ones can be a tremendous support in helping us to shift our
attention.
In either case, there are so many lights for us to focus on. The Source of all has created so many beautiful
positive things, and people have created so many wonderful healthy ways in which we can spend our time.
Chanukah itself can help inspire us. It can help remind us that “it is not by military might, nor by physical
power, but by My spirit.” (Zechariah 4:6) It is through spirit, through will of mind that we can make the
decision to take control, light the candles, bring in the light, and dispel the darkness.
It is our spiritual strength that can help us be successful in overcoming these spiritual challenges.
It is our spiritual strength that can help us overcome the darkness and bring in the light.
This is one of the most important lessons of Chanukah: In spite of the challenges and the darkness that we
face, through our spirit we can create light and dispel the darkness.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
“In tribute to his memory I pledge to perform acts of charity and goodness.”
As I was preparing to write this column, I received two very different items of news concerning OZS. First was the good news that
OZS, as a congregation, not just as individuals, would be participating in the Tzeason of Tzedakah organized by the Jewish
Federation of the Bluegrass. I decided that my column would center on that idea. Unfortunately, that good news was all too quickly
followed by the terrible news of the tragic death of OZS’s treasurer, and my friend, Johnny Perel. How could I not address that
event, which has such a direct impact not only on many of us as individuals, but on the congregation as a whole? I then realized that
there was a connection between the two things, in the words of the Yizkor prayer we recite in memory of our beloved family and
friends, the key phrase of which, in the version from Siddur Hadash, opens my column.
As Jews, we are very familiar with the idea of tzedakah, although we tend to translate it in a very narrow way, as charity, rather than
in its true meaning of justice or righteousness. We tend to be very generous in our monetary gifts, to OZS, to JFB, to local charities,
or to national or international organizations, both Jewish and secular. While such monetary charity is vital, most of us, for various
reasons, often neglect another aspect, the giving of our time and energy to help people directly. OZS, in fact, provides several
notable opportunities for this sort of tzedakah, such as Faith Feeds, in which members glean unsold food from local farmers’ markets
to be given to food banks, and Backpacking for God’s Pantry, where we assemble packages of food for the weekend to be
distributed to children (and their families) who receive free lunches during the school week. With just a few hours a month, we are
able to help a significant number of people in need. OZS has also, over the past few months, participated in a building project for
Habitat for Humanity. These have always been successful, but additional volunteers are always welcome, and could help us expand
these efforts.
Each year, in December, the Jewish Federation of the Bluegrass organizes the Tzeason of Tzedakah, during which members of the
Jewish community of Lexington help our needy non-Jewish neighbors during their holiday season. Most often, we have participated
as individuals. This year, however, JFB has asked the local congregations to each organize volunteers for a specific charity, and
OZS, as Lisa Satin has recently announced, will be working with the Catholic Action Center’s Christmas Store, which provides free
toys to needy families. We will be helping to set up and staff the store. I urge as many of you as possibly can to sign up to participate.
Please see page 5 for contact and signup information.
Part of the Jewish tradition of tzedakah is to make charitable donations in the memory of our loved ones. I would like to do
something similar with Ohavay Zion’s participation in this year’s Tzeason of Tzedakah, and dedicate it to the memory of Johnny
Perel. May his memory be for a blessing.
