Handmade in the United Kingdom since 1927 TRADE MARK Synonymous with quality and service A guide to help you make an informed choice . . . It is a fact of life that as human beings we spend up to one third of our lives in bed. A good nights sleep is paramount in order to prepare us for the day ahead as it can give us better energy levels, increased concentration abilities and a general feeling of well being. Unfortunately, however, it is another fact that only a small percentage of people realise that the quality of their sleep is directly related to the quality, age and condition of their own current bed. A bed purchased should be viewed as an investment towards a healthier lifestyle. TEN YEAR GUARANTEE Burgess Beds Ltd. are proud to state that all their products carry a ten year guarantee. If a problem arises within this period, then, in the first instance, the end user should contact the retailer where the purchase was made. Burgess Beds will either, repair, or replace, free of charge, any part of the product which becomes defective within ten years from the date of purchase due to either faulty material or poor workmanship. Burgess Beds will refuse service if the bed is found to be in an unhygenic or insanitary condition. Burgess will not accept responsibility if the basic instructions, defined in the “Caring for your bed” care leaflet attached to every product, is not observed. If any repair is carried out, then Burgess reserve the right to substitute equivalent materials if those used in the original manufacturing process are not available. We are all individuals and as such have different requirements with respect to bed type, combination and support. Hopefully this Burgess product guide will help you make an informed choice. However, please remember that there is nothing more important than physically trying out the individual products in order to make your final decision. Spend as much time as you can choosing which product is right for you. Don’t be hurried. Buying a new bed for yourself is an important decision and if sufficient time is spent on selection then you should enjoy the benefits of your new bed for years to come. TRADE MARK Synonymous with quality and service “There is hardly anything in the world that some man cannot make a little worse and sell a little cheaper and the people who consider price only are this man’s lawful prey” John Ruskin (1819-1900) Embedded in history . . . Burgess was established in 1927 by Harry Burgess and was incorporated as a limited company in 1955. For almost 80 years Burgess has remained very much a family run company and has manufactured, without compromise, hand crafted, quality beds for the home, hotels, shipping lines and many more institutions. The Rovers Return, 1920 All materials used are of the highest quality and each product is individually and carefully hand crafted using time honoured skills that British craftsmanship represents. It is based largely on the quality and benefits experienced by the end users of Burgess Beds that a proud reputation has been earned and defended. “ I read with great interest the recent article about the researchers who discovered a “Rovers Return” beer house in Manchester in the 1920s. I can remember the Rovers Return which faced the Hen Market in Shudehill. It was next to the Burgess Bedding factory. Unfortunately the inn was allowed to fall into disrepair and in time became an antique shop. After the war, the building was demolished . . . I doubt if that would be allowed to happen today. I am enclosing a picture of the Rovers Return from my collection of bygone Manchester. This is amplified by the fact that Burgess are ‘bespoke’ bed manufacturers and can offer a bed of any size and shape to suit the discerning customer. ” Extract from Weekend Memories in the Manchester Evening News, compiled by Peter Sharples. High Street Customers By the late 1920’s the Burgess Bedding Company had already secured the business of many independent high street customers as well as multiple chain outlets. The Manchester Miller The first British vessel to sail through the Great St. Lawrence Seaway was equipped with Burgess pocketed sprung mattresses. Utility Label taken from a Buckingham mattress manufactured in 1944 and replaced in 2001. Supporting you for years . . . The construction of mattress and divan springs falls into two categories. i.e. (i) an open coil construction, and (ii) a pocketed construction. We, at Burgess, use both systems in order to meet the needs and the requirements of each and every customer new and old. The object of this section is to briefly describe the basic construction of each type. Open coil spring construction The first photograph shows individual open coil springs prior to assembly. Each individual coil is laced together, lengthways and widthways, by a wire screw known as a helical wire. The second photograph shows this, the helical wire running across the width of the mattress. Because of its construction, open coil mattresses tend to only have 50% max. of the springs assembled into a pocketed mattress. All Burgess divans/bases utilise an open coil spring construction. Pocketed spring construction The benefits of the pocketed type of Handmade in the UK mattress spring construction, versus the open coil construction, are many and varied e.g: a)At least double the amount of coils are used in the pocketed type. For example, the Lancaster mattress uses 960 pocketed springs in the 5’0 size versus 430 open coil springs in the Buckingham mattress. b)Pocketed type construction minimises roll together. Photograph three shows an individual coil before being compression assembled into its individual white calico pocket. Each pocket is hand nested and sewn/glued together at the centre of each spring therefore effectively isolating each spring’s deflection from each other. See fourth photograph below. c)The density of spring count achieved in a nested, pocketed construction is clearly demonstrated in photograph five. d)Because more individual coil springs are used in the pocketed construction then common sense suggests that the user will enjoy a better support. Each individual spring can be very light yet the whole assembled spring will be very supportive. Further, as can be seen in photograph three, Burgess only use 6-coil, barrel shaped pocketed springs in their traditional pocketed mattresses. This ensures the full recovery of the spring after compression. Upholstery fillings from around the world . . . When developing and constructing it’s sleep products, Burgess uses, whenever possible and indeed whenever necessary, natural upholstery fillings. Different filling specifications coupled with a particular spring system provide a unique feel, the combinations of which all contribute to the Burgess range of products. The use of top quality, top performing fillings in the correct combinations and with the correct spring system is viewed as a pre-requisite in the design of all Burgess products. The key objective is always to create a range of products that covers every person’s needs as individuals. The different upholstery materials used in the construction of Burgess’ products are defined and explained below. Hand teased, long stranded, curled, white hair This is the finest quality filling available, being very resilient, highly durable and with an inherent ability to recover to it’s original shape. The process of hand teasing further enhances the natural characteristics and creates a more breathable, even and luxurious filling. Long stranded hair pad Cotton felt This is the same raw material as the hand teased hair but is machine carded and needled onto a natural backing to form a pad. Superior white cotton, borax treated and multi layered to provide a traditional mattress filling. Memory foam (Visco-elastic) Cashmere The unique characteristics of cashmere yield a super soft yet durable mattress filling and comfort layer. Pure new lambswool Pure new lambswool is soft, yet supportive. It retains warmth in the winter yet displays cool characteristics in the summer. This is used, in the main, as a surface comfort layer. 100% organic wool Organically farmed wool is used as a comfort layer in the Maya and Inca mattresses and is 100% chemical free. Handmade in the UK A NASA conceived and developed material which is sensitive to temperature and pressure and therefore responds to body heat and weight. Optimum support is given by evenly distributing the pressures caused by body weight. Has proven effective in the treatment of decubitus ulcers and back disorders. Latex Hypo allergenic latex, a natural material produced from the sap of the rubber tree (Hevea Brasiliensis) that has an in-built recovery memory. This keeps the mattress plump and has a slight springy feel. Wool felt Used as a bulk filling and also compression packed into mattress borders prior to hand side-stitching. White polyester fibre Soft, resilient and moisture resistant. Used in the main as a surface comfort layer. Rebound polycotton A polyester and superior white cotton mix, thermally bonded to create an excellent filling medium with in-built recovery memory. Rebound polyester High-density polyester thermally bonded to create a pad. Excellent bulk quantities and used in the Burgess unsprung mattress. Super soft, waxed cambric Forms an internal mattress barrier to prevent hair migration. Hessian High density Hessian is used as a spring insulator in pocketed mattresses and some divan bases. It provides the foundation for the comfort layers of fillings. Coco lock fibre As the name suggests the base fibre in this product comes from the coconut i.e coir hair. It is bonded into a pad with rubberised latex. It is used as a spring insulator on Burgess’ no turn products. Coir fibre (or Coir hair) Coir fibre pads are used as an alternative spring insulator. Again it is manufactured from coconut fibre, which is carded and needled into a loose weave polyester substratum. Hand crafted mattresses . . . All Burgess mattresses are hand made by skilled craftsmen following exactly the same techniques and traditions as employed by the Burgess craftsmen of bygone years. No short cuts are taken. Quality is of the essence. When building a Burgess mattress there are certain key elements to consider. These are described below. Hand sewn spring insulator Ventilators All Burgess mattress building commences with the spring insulator. This is the base layer of upholstery, hand sewn using linen twine onto the spring (not stapled as most other manufacturers) to create a perfectly tailored foundation for the mattress comfort layers. Every Burgess mattress border is fitted with solid brass ventilators. This enables the mattress to breathe and air. Hand teasing Dependant on specification, certain layers of upholstery are hand teased. This age old craft is time consuming but does amplify the inherent properties of natural fillings. It is carried out carefully by hand, separating the fibres in order to create a more open, softer and even layer of upholstery. This is demonstrated in the main photograph on the previous page. Handmade in the UK Flag stitched handles All Burgess mattresses are fitted with a minimum of four flag stitched handles. A mattress constructed from natural fillings does need regular turning. (Please see the “Caring for your Burgess Bed” leaflet attached to every mattress). Hand side stitched borders All Burgess pocketed mattresses and the open coil Buckingham mattress employ ‘hand side stitched’ borders. This traditional and highly skilled operation is not to be confused with machine stitched borders, which can essentially look the same but are in actual fact poles apart in terms of functionality. The process of hand side stitching involves physically stitching the mattress border to the mattress spring unit. This is carried out using long upholstery needles with natural linen high tensile strength twine. The outcome of this procedure is a beautifully tailored mattress with a firm yet supportive border working in conjunction with the mattress periphery frame, yielding a full width sleep surface. The mattress border can have two, three or even four rows of hand side stitching. The top and bottom rows of the Buckingham mattress are painstakingly sewn to create the unique rolled edge, which has become synonymous with the Burgess name. The photograph opposite shows a highly skilled craftsman applying this technique. Tufting Once the mattress has been built, the finishing operation is that of hand tufting. This involves the use of large tufting needles which, depending on specification, drives cotton or twine popins through the total depth of the mattress, secured again, by hand, with cotton or pure worsted wool tufts. Unlike the more basic quilted panel mattress constructions, the process of tufting ensures that the fillings and the springing system cannot move out of position, therefore ensuring the longevity of the mattress. Craftsman tailored divans/bases . . . When considering the purchase of a new bed it is quite usual for people to give only passing consideration to the choice of divan or bed base. We would stress that the quality of construction of these items is of extreme importance as the full benefits of the mattress can only be appreciated if the correct type of support is used. It is important to remember that mattresses used in conjunction with the different types of divan, manufactured by Burgess, will yield different feels as a combination. Burgess classify their traditional divans / bases into three basic categories. They are, starting with the softest feel: Sprung edge divans (storage and non-storage) Burgess manufactures two types of Sprung Edge Divan. i.e. storage and non-storage. The basic non-storage sprung edge divans are manufactured using 7.5” or 9.5” solid wooden sided frames onto which a multi coil spring unit is mounted prior to upholstery and cover. The Sprung Edge storage divans are manufactured using a 9.5” solid wooden sided frame in the same way as the nonstorage but modified for drawer apertures. Again, a multi coil spring unit is mounted onto the frame prior to upholstery and cover. Several drawer options are offered (see “Burgess Divan Specifications” on Handmade in the UK inside back cover). The filling specification consists of a heavyweight coir fibre spring insulator pad which is hand stitched to the spring, not stapled. Upholstery consists of multiple layers of wool and polyester. All double divans are offered split East to West or North to South and are linked together on assembly at the end users house with nickel linking bars and wing nuts. Firm edge divans / bed bases (non storage) Firm edge divans (sometimes known as deep divans) and bed bases are of a similar construction. Bed bases are designed to fit onto or into a bedstead, whereas Firm Edge Divans, whether on legs or not, are designed to be free standing. The frame constructions for all these type of products are of solid timber sides. Individual heavy duty double cone upholstery springs are set into the framework, on supporting bars, then interlaced tightly together with jute webbing and a hessian insulator which together produce a firm surface, as a foundation, from which to upholster and cover. Upholstery consists of multiple layers of wool and polyester. All double divans are offered hinged (not split) East to West for ease of entry into the home. This particular type of base cannot be split due to the nature of the folding design. If required double sizes can be fully split from North to South to effectively create two single size beds, which can be linked together to form a double size. Solid top / padded top divans (storage and non-storage) Burgess manufacture two types of solid top divan i.e. storage and non-storage. The basic non-storage divans are manufactured using 13” solid wooden sided frames onto which a hardboard topper is placed to provide a solid foundation from which to upholster and cover. The Solid Top Drawer divan frames are manufactured in exactly the same way but are modified to include drawer apertures. Several drawer options are offered (see “Burgess Divan Specifications” on inside back cover). As this divan has a solid top then no spring insulator is required. Upholstery consists of layers of wool and polyester. All double divans are offered split East to West or North to South and are linked together on assembly at the end users home with nickel linking bars and wing nuts. General note All divan borders and panels are sewn together with identical ticking or contrasting upholstery fabric. The cover is then taped edged using complimentary colour tape. Headboard fittings are fitted prior to delivery and require no tools to tighten or loosen. All timber used is from sustainable forests. Burgess was established over 80 years ago and has earned a reputation for top quality, traditional sleep products. However, there is no reason at all why traditional craftsmen, focused on the longevity of a product, cannot be employed to create a contemporary look without any loss in quality ideals. The key objective of creating such a range is to design the product so that, where appropriate, it can be dis-assembled prior to despatch and re-assembled in the end user’s home. We feel that this is particularly important in our modern society when an apartment complex with less than ideal entry space is apparent. Altea Sleigh divan This bed has been designed with the modern living concept in mind. The Altea Sleigh Divan is shown on this page with sprung bed bases. This is also available as an ottoman, slatted base or electric adjustable base. varnished. Unfinished feet can be supplied for customers to stain and varnish to the colour of their choice. As an alternative, chrome feet are also available. On the far right it is pictured in fuchsia faux suede which is just one of 58 vibrant colours available. On the immediate right the Altea Sleigh divan is featured in olive linen which is one of three colours available, the other two colours being natural and chocolate linen. Many other materials are available on request, such as leather, linen, wool, etc. On this product legs are finished in dark brown stain and varnished or natural Handmade in the UK Altea Sleigh divan The Stowaway divan The Stowaway divan is shown below upholstered in chocolate linen. As previously stated two other colours of linen are offered, i.e. natural and olive. One of fifty-eight colours of faux suede fabrics are also offered with this product along with matching mattress ticking or, indeed, customer’s own material. As can be seen, the product features an upright headboard and footboard and can be supplied with a sprung slatted base or traditional sprung bed base. The underneath bed features an upholstered side rail to look like a large drawer when in the closed position. Because of its unique design which is similar in construction to the Altea Sleigh divan previously described, the Stowaway Stowaway divan (closed) bed can be dis-assembled and re-assembled by one person in minutes. Due to its contemporary look, people may require to purchase this product as a freestanding bed without the underneath stowaway bed and may even wish to have this product in double sizes. Contemporary storage The sprung edge drawer divan featured here with the Zeus mattress is manufactured in the traditional way but made to look very modern by using a colour coordinated upholstery cloth. The divan shown here is in mocha faux suede (one of fifty-eight colours). The Calpe headboard shown here is again upholstered in matching mocha faux suede and is available as a separate accessory. Stowaway divan (open) The Zeus mattress (featured on a sprung edge drawer base with matching Calpe headboard) Hand tailored for you . . . Burgess are “bespoke” bed manufacturers and have, throughout its long history, always created beds to suit the individual needs and requirements of each and every customer. These needs and requirements may necessitate the diligent following of a customer’s personal specification, which deviates from standard. This deviation to the standard specification could be associated with special lengths, widths, shapes, overall heights, fillings, coverings, etc. Any size Burgess will manufacture a bed of any length or width. Where space permits, we would recommend purchasing the largest bed possible . . . the bigger the bed, the more comfortable it is. Zip and link If access is a problem, or for those people who may choose from time to time to create two separate beds, then we do manufacture zip and link sets in any of our specifications. For example, two 3’ 0” mattresses and divans can be zipped and linked together in the room of use to create a 6’ 0” wide bed. Furthermore, this design of product is ideal for people who wish to combine two mattresses of different tensions. This is particularly important for partners where there is a substantial difference in weight or indeed a different firmness requirement. Any height The specification of the mattress dictates the depth of the mattress, typically 7” to 9” (128mm to 229mm). Burgess creates different height bed combinations by altering the height of the solid timber base. Medical/allergy Any shape Round beds, beds with cut outs for fourposter beds, wedge shaped beds that fit into the bow of boats are some examples of the different shapes that Burgess regularly manufacture. Contemporary versus traditional Even a traditional bed can be made to look contemporary by the simple addition of a modern leg or foot instead of the traditional castor. If people do want a totally contemporary base, then please be assured that a Burgess mattress can be made to fit any type of base, whether manufactured by Burgess or not. Create your own look Many customers wish to make a feature of their divan. If any of our range of fabrics is not to their taste, then we can upholster any of our divans or headboards in customer’s own fabric. Burgess manufacture “wedge” shaped beds for those people suffering from varicose veins or hiatus hernia. Burgess also manufacture mattresses that offer help to some allergy sufferers by using hypoallergenic filling materials such as latex, polyester, borax treated cotton, etc. The Lancaster mattress (featured on a firm edge divan on legs) Handmade in the UK Uniquely designed for you . . . Burgess will work with you to design your own bed. Contemporary, classic or way-out, we will work with you to create a truly bespoke piece of furniture unique to you. Draw Manufacture Finishing Tell us your requirements or ideas and we will produce a drawing for you and if this is not what you want we will start again! Once you are completely happy with the drawings and cover we will start manufacture of your bed which will be beautifully hand crafted from start to finish. You can decide on the finish of the bed, such as feet, chrome, brass, castors, wood, plinths, etc. You can also add complementary bolster cushions, pillows, etc. . . . the choice is endless! Specifications You can decide what specifications you require, such as ottoman under bed storage, drawers, sprung or solid bed bases, slatted base or even electric adjustable base. Materials Once we have the shape and specification of the base you can decide what cover you require. Burgess can source almost anything from metallic leather to linens, silks, velvets, suedes, or you may even like to source your own. Naturally for you . . . We have worked hard to source the materials for a completely natural mattress. The results are the Maya and the Inca mattresses. Both mattresses utilise pocketed springs (1500 count/1000 count respectively). The cover, or sleep surface, is made from 100% certified organic, unbleached brushed cotton. The sleep layer, or first comfort layer, is made from super soft, 100% organic British wool. The second and third comfort layers consist of 100% natural latex for durability and natural coir fibre. The mattress has a natural fire-retardant interliner and is finished with solid brass vents and features two rows of hand side stitching. The Inca mattress (featured on bespoke Moraira sleigh bed) The Maya mattress (featured on Oliva sleigh bed) Handmade in the UK Something different . . . The Foldaway bed is ideal for flats, bedsits, hotels or rooms where space is at a premium. The Foldaway bed is easy to install with the substantial base being pre-drilled ready for fixing to virtually any floor type. The spring assisted base easily folds away, into an alcove, into a cupboard or even behind a curtain and comes complete with mattress retaining straps. The extremely robust foldaway bed mechanism is manufactured using a strong tubular steel and mesh construction. It is spring assisted for ease of operation. We do not claim that the springs perfectly balance the weight of the mechanism and mattress but do indeed substantially ease the load when moving into the sleep or storage position. When the bed is in the upright position and not installed in a cupboard or alcove it is important, for safety reasons, that the foot end leg mechanism is rotated into the closed position. Before rotating the whole mechanism into the sleep position it is important to rotate the foot end leg into the open position and firmly lock into position using the thumb screws provided. Mattresses are sold separately, each one individually hand crafted in our workshops. The Foldaway bed is available to suit the following widths of standard 6’ 3” (191cm) long mattresses: From wall to front edge of frame (installation dimension) Overall width of base 3’ 0” (91cm) 4’ 0” (122cm) 4’ 6” (137cm) 18” (46cm) 18” (46cm) 18” (46cm) 39.5” (100cm) 51.5” (131cm) 57.5” (146cm) Overall height of upright frame 78” (198cm) 78” (198cm) 78” (198cm) Distance from wall to front end of frame (sleep position) 79” (201cm) 79” (201cm) 79” (201cm) Height of frame in sleep position (from floor) excl. mattress 8” (20.5cm) 8” (20.5cm) 8” (20.5cm) 26 kilos 31 kilos 41 kilos Total weight of frame The Ulti-matt story . . . Space-scientist developed visco-elastic memory foam working in perfect harmony with planet earth’s natural materials Customer requirements Burgess decided to “buck the trend” and create something different and with real advantages over the current run of the mill memory foam mattresses on the market. To this end a mattress has been developed to create, as the name suggests, a construction that uses what Burgess believes to be the ultimate combination of space age developed materials working in perfect harmony with nature’s own tried and tested materials. Throughout the development process, it was always paramount to Burgess, to create a mattress that performs in a vastly superior manner to any other memory foam type of mattress. The end result is the Ulti-matt. Design ideals The Ulti-matt’s sleep surface is made from visco-elastic memory foam. This is a thermo-sensitive material that responds Handmade in the UK to body temperature and weight and, because of this, the body weight is evenly distributed creating a pressure relieving sleep surface. The full body profile, no matter what sleep position is adopted, is supported properly maintaining the natural alignment of the sleeper’s spine. The visco-elastic memory foam creates a weightless, flotation effect. Positional comfort is, of course, paramount. However, eight other basic design ideals had to be achieved in order to create the perfect sleep environment:• excellent ventilation • excellent body heat control • excellent moisture control • can be used on any divan base • conforms to BS7177:1996 flammability regulations • super soft knitted, washable and removable cover • excellent pressure relief • three comfort levels The finished design Most other mattress manufacturers use polyurethane foam as the base foundation, positioned under the memory foam, for their mattress constructions. Such foams attract moisture in exactly the same way that a car wash sponge attracts and holds water. Any passage of moisture, in the form of perspiration through the open celled structure of the memory foam sleep surface, can be trapped in the polyurethane foam giving rise to an environment which actively encourages the development of mold and mildew. It is interesting to note that we lose more than a quarter of a litre of perspiration per night whilst sleeping. The Ulti-matt combats this effect by utilising four upholstery layers as shown opposite. The top layer, or sleep layer, is made from memory foam which creates a weightless flotation effect. It is hypoallergenic, antibacterial and helps prevent allergies and dust mites. The three support layers are made from natural latex and coir fibre:Latex is a naturally derived, biodegradable product which is produced from the sap,of the rubber tree, Hevea Brasiliensis. It is hypoallergenic, it breathes and ventilates naturally to keep you warm in Winter and cool in Summer. In addition, bacteria, mildew and mold cannot live in latex, which is also dust mite resistant. Rubberised coir is spun natural coir fibres, shaped into a fleece and then spray bonded with natural latex. As with all natural fibres, their capillary properties ensure a natural micro climate which regulates the temperature and moisture for optimum comfort in Summer and Winter months. TRADE MARK Ulti-matt makes the world of difference Choosing your bed . . . most frequently asked questions . . . Q: Why should I buy a Burgess mattress? . . . 1: Handmade in the UK to the highest specifications and quality standards by . . . 2: time served craftsmen who, over a 3 year training period, learn to use and employ techniques handed down since the company’s inception in 1927, using . . . 3: a wide variety of natural materials, including long stranded white hair, cashmere, coir fibre, hessian, cotton and wool, which has subsequently led to . . . 4: the company being awarded the manufacturing guild mark for excellence in addition to being one of the founder members of the National Bed Federation (NBF), which enables us to offer . . . 5: a full 10 year guarantee on ALL products. What basic advice would you give me when buying a new bed? Spend as much time as you can choosing your bed. Physically lie on them deciding from previous experience the tension you would like or need. Compare the different specifications offered. Do not be rushed into a decision. If you are not sure go back and try the beds again. Find one that you feel gives you the best support. When on your side the mattress should be accommodating to your shoulders and hips. When lying on your back insert a fist into the small of your back. It should be a snug fit. I have bought a slatted base and would like a mattress to go on it. Are Burgess mattresses suitable? Yes. All our mattresses are suitable for slatted bases. We would recommend however, that there is no more than a 3” (75mm) gap between the slats. Are your beds fire retardant? Yes. By law, all beds have to be F.R. treated. We cannot sell a bed that does not comply with BS7177: 1996 for domestic use (low hazard). Indeed all our products have a blue cigarette label stating our compliance. Handmade in the UK Do I need to turn my mattress? The Burgess traditional range of mattresses majors on natural fillings. Such mattresses do need regular turning in order to allow the fillings to settle evenly. See the “Caring for your bed” leaflet attached to every mattress. However, Burgess do manufacture no turn mattresses, which are manufactured utilising man made fillings. See “Burgess mattress and divan specifications” on inside back cover. Will different divans/bases affect the feel of a mattress I have selected? Different types of divans give the mattress a different feel. Always make sure if you are purchasing a mattress only that you try it on the same type of divan/base that it is going to be used. Should I purchase a very firm bed to ease my back pain? You need a new bed, which offers the correct support for you as an individual. (Not necessarily hard at all!) You can have a soft bed that gives good support or a firm bed that gives bad support and indeed vice versa. Only you know what feels comfortable and supportive to you. We all lie in bed in different ways. We are all individuals. Can you make me a non-standard size? Burgess are bespoke bed manufacturers and can therefore make beds of any size or any shape. See the “Hand tailored for you” section in this booklet. What do I do if my partner prefers a firmer bed than me? We make most of our mattresses in more than one tension so you can have two separate mattresses, of the same model but in different tensions, zipped together. How do I know what size bed is best for me? The largest bed you can afford is best. Larger beds are more comfortable especially if you are sharing, as you are less likely to disturb each other’s sleep. The pocket sprung mattresses I have looked at do not seem to be flat. Does this mean there is something wrong? No. Luxury pocketed beds do not have an even surface. They mould to your bodies contours and indentations can remain apparent even when the bed is turned. This is not a fault. I have measured my new bed but it does not measure 5’ 0” x 6’ 6” exactly . . . is this a fault? All Burgess mattresses are hand made and inevitably have a sizable manufacturing tolerance. We aim for +0.0” to -1.0”. As the product, particularly the mattress, is soft and forgiving, then different people will yield different results whilst measuring the product. There is a correct way of measuring a mattress. The width of the mattress should be measured 5”6” (125mm-150mm) in from the head or foot end. The length should be measured 5”-6” (125mm-150mm) in from the side of the mattress. The tape edge should be kept under slight tension when measuring at both sides. How often should I purchase a new bed? We recommend that you should change your bed within a ten-year period. This does, of course, assume that the bed has been cared for in the correct manner. See the “Caring for you Burgess bed” leaflet attached to every product. Choosing guidelines . . . Illustrated are the basic guidelines that Burgess offer to assist in the choice of the correct level of support for your weight. This is a standard guide that most manufacturers and retailers offer.
