Expro PowerChokes®
Overview
•
History: PowerChokes® was formed in 1989 by two mechanical engineers with 48
years of combined experience
•
Initial goal: service the US oil and gas drilling industry with rental chokes
•
Simple strategy: start with industry standard chokes then, improve choke products
and services to raise the industry standard
•
Today: worldwide leader in severe service chokes, controls, instrumentation, and
Pressure Relief Valves (PRV)
•
Evolved into the market standard for severe duty chokes:
•
•
•
Facility certified to ISO 9001 and API Q1, 6A and 16C
API audit for 2013 & 2014 resulted in ZERO findings
Equipment certified to ABS CDS, DNV, CE, PED, ATEX, IECEx, CSA, NEMA

The Automatic Back Pressure System (ABP)
•
Expro’s new Automatic Back Pressure System (ABP), is a type of closed loop
performance drilling system that allows management of the bottom hole pressure
using a standard PowerChokes® choke or drilling manifold
•
The ABP is also called a set-point system
•
Once the set-point pressure is input, the ABP automatically maintains that pressure
through both influx and loss events
•
As the well conditions change the set pressure can be changed as needed at the touch
screen HMI
•
A connection set-point allows for faster more efficient connections and more
accurately manage bottom hole pressure during connections

Closed loop drilling overview
Closed loop drilling
• Containing the entire wellbore circulation
• Allows manipulation of the pressure
• Creates tool for kick mitigation

To Choke System
Diverter
Typical package
• Rotating Control Device (RCD) or diverter
• Choke and/or manifold for pressure
control
• Active control system
Annular
Preventer
BOP Stack
Advantages
• Choke allows for pressure manipulation
• Kicks can be brought to surface under
control
• Gas can be circulated out
• Downhole pressure can be managed.
• In most cases operators can drill ahead
during these events reducing NPT

Closed loop drilling
•
Back pressure on the wellbore increases or decreases the pressure on the reservoir,
which minimizes the need to increase or decrease the mud weight
•
By using a choke to apply back pressure while circulating/drilling, the mud weight is
artificially increased or decreased, to manage the bottom hole pressure.

ABP advantages
Lower mud costs
• Reduce drilling fluid costs utilizing back pressure to optimize mud weights
• Management of depleted pore pressure and fluid loss situations. Minimize
unplanned fluid loss and drilling costs
Reduce drilling time
• By maintaining bottom hole pressure within a narrow pore pressure/fracture
pressure window and reducing well bore problems and Non Productive Time
(NPT)
• Optimize well/casing design by managing fluid weights and pore pressure it is
possible to influence casing points and potentially eliminate existing casing strings
• Optimization of Equivalent Circulating Density (ECD) and performance drilling
should lead to a direct ROP benefit.
• Effectively manage influx during connections automatically.
Safety
• Safely manage unplanned influx and well control issues efficiently
• Quickly detect changing well conditions for faster decision making
• Safely manage hydrocarbons during connections

Automatic Back Pressure System (ABP)
By providing Surface Back-Pressure
during drilling and while making
connections, the mud weight is
manipulated, higher pump rates
can be use, and less chance of
damaging well bore.
