INTRODUCTION
May I begin by thanking you, from all of us at Northcot, for having chosen to consider
using Northcot bricks for building your new house and home? As I am sure you are already
discovering, building your own home is a very exciting and fulfilling experience. Northcot bricks
are a wonderful way to make the most of it.
THE
FIRST
CHOICE
When designing and choosing materials for building your home there are probably three
questions that are paramount – will the building be comfortable and environmentally sound for
you and your family, will the building look different from others and lastly will the building be a
good investment for you and reap financial rewards when eventually you come to sell it?
What bricks lend to these questions is warmth and individuality. Warmth in terms of colour,
comfort, and sustainability. Individuality in terms of colour, shapes and sizes.
Northcot genuine handmade bricks are produced by craftsmen using techniques perfected over
the centuries. This experience is aligned with modern technology. In addition, perhaps even
more important to you, Northcot bricks are sold by a company that is passionate about being
best and delighting our customers.
I hope that Northcot is your ‘First Choice’ and you buy Northcot – if you do
please sit back and enjoy the experience that begins on the very next page.
With best wishes,
Northcot genuine handmade bricks are
produced by craftsmen using techniques
perfected over the centuries.

because the permission you need to build may depend upon your choice of materials and bricks
can be a very positive element to your application.

You may have already appointed an architect or surveyor to help you with this process. There is a
very helpful Government website called the Planning Portal (www.planningportal.gov.uk) which
gives information on the issues you will face when you apply for planning permission. However, a
professional adviser is advisable and will be able to inform you about the most appropriate choice
of bricks for the area in which you are building.

Brick specifications
It is as well to find out at an early stage what brick choices are available to you. Bricks are not an
expensive element in the building of a house – on average they are no more than 5% of the cost.
However, there are many different types as well as makes and sizes. It is as well to decide at an
early stage the colour, size and type – handmade or machine made – that you want. The choice can
have a big effect on the final ‘look’ of your home. If you are nearby Northcot, come and see our
brick displays. Alternatively, your local builder’s merchant will be able to advise you, and they
may have a brick library. On the other hand, call us and ask for some sample bricks to be sent to
you. Within 48 hours we can send to you a 3 or 5 brick pack, or when you get to the planning stage
a 60 brick panel.

Conservation
When to consider bricks
Northcot has always taken seriously our responsibility with regard to environmental matters.
Now, with the award of ISO 14001 certification, this has been confirmed by outside experts who
are used to verifying standards on a daily basis in a wide variety of trades and industries.
Recent research by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors found that in comparison to a
broad selection of popular finishes for the external skin of a building, installed brickwork beat
just about all of them on price. However, there are many other reasons to choose brick. Brick is
both practical and beautiful. The rich colour and texture of brick adds immensely to the visual
appeal of a house, of which bricks are usually about 66%. Bricks last for a very long time and are
very low in maintenance. Brick is also very good at retaining heat that is important in achieving
the environmental targets set by Government in the building of new homes (see The Code for
Sustainable Homes). Bricks also come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colours so you can make
your home as individual as you want. And they can be weathered, which can give your new
home an ‘aged’ appearance. At Northcot we have brick panels which show you how the bricks
you choose will look, so come and see them if you can.
What are the considerations
There are primarily three – the look, the structure and the environment. Brick is often chosen as
a building material in order to complement and integrate with the surrounding environment,
especially in areas with graded buildings. Its flexibility means it can be used both to provide a
beautiful facade and as an excellent structural material. It may also be a requirement for it to be in
harmony with other building materials. With a wide range of colours and varying textures, brick
offers many alternative styles, from rustic farmhouses to contemporary city apartment buildings.
When combined with choices of laying patterns, mortar colours and finishes, brick – and genuine
handmade bricks particularly - can be used to leave a distinctive and extraordinary impression on
the landscape.

What goes with the bricks
Bricks are not just square. They come in a variety of shapes to provide interesting brickwork in or
out of the house or in the garden. By using Special bricks you can add even more individuality to
your home and extend your home sympathetically into the garden.
Where are you calling?
Next action
Once you have made your choice to use bricks in principle, the next task is to get down to the
detail. If you have chosen to build with a handmade brick, select the colour and size with which
you want to build. Then call us at Northcot and ask about samples and the service we can offer
you as you begin to move towards building your home.

THE FIRST CALL

Northcot Brick is based in Blockley, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, in the North
Cotswolds, the essence of the English countryside.
It is a pretty village, noted for the former silk mills that brought wealth and prosperity to the
village during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It is a small village and many of its
residents have worked or do work in the brickworks. It is a significant local employer, currently
employing 40 people, and takes that responsibility seriously. The brickworks is situated next to
the quarry used in the making of Northcot bricks, and it has always been a policy of the company
to be ‘good neighbours’ and to manage the quarry responsibly. The Wellacre quarry, a Site of
Special Scientific Interest, is renowned for its outstanding Lower Jurassic middle lias clay, ideal
for brick production, that when fired in a traditional kiln produces an intense, individual, orange
base colour.

History
Northcot has been making bricks during two centuries. It was started by Edward Spencer
Churchill and taken over by the current owners in 1952. It is a family business and the current
Managing Director is the son of the previous one. During its life, it has produced bricks for many
famous buildings including nearly 2 million bricks for the construction of the iconic London
landmark, Battersea power station.
Geography
Northcot Brick is situated near to many of the well-known Cotswold towns such as Moreton-inMarsh, Chipping Campden and Stow-on-the-Wold. Its land borders the main railway to London,
which used to transport much of Northcot’s production to other parts of the country. It has easy
access from M4, M40 and M5 motorways.
THE FIRST PICK
Cost of bricks
In setting a budget for bricks there can be considerable variations. Bricks costs vary according
to manufacturing type but genuine Handmade bricks tend to be in the range of £600 - £1000 per
1,000 bricks or £36-60 per metre. You always get what you pay for and handmade bricks are the
best bricks, that are literally ‘thrown’ by hand by a skilled handmaker, which are both beautiful
and expensive. These are bricks that are completely individual to you and your home, each one
different one to another. They have both a colour and texture simply not available in the majority
of machine-made bricks. The benefit to you is that you new home can be individual and different
from any other house.
Main costs to avoid
There are three main costs that can be avoided with careful planning. Firstly, carefully estimate
the number of bricks you need – once bought they can’t be returned. Secondly, blend your bricks
carefully to make sure you get the ‘look’ you want or you may need to buy some more to get the
right blend. Thirdly, make sure the bricks are delivered on the day that the bricklayer is on site –
a day late is the cost of a skilled craftsman.

Type of bricks
Bespoke brick selection
There are three main types of bricks of which genuine handmade bricks of the type in the
brochure are the best. Not only are they more individual, they have a natural quality not seen
in machine-made bricks. They have an individual beauty and character of their own. They have
subtle colours and texture. Handmade bricks are the brick of choice when an extra aesthetic
dimension is required. They quite simply separate your house from the rest.
If you want something really special, why not devise your own blend. We can provide handsorted colour blends and additional weathering to your particular requirements.
Brick matching
If you have seen a brick that you like, we may well be able to match it. We do on occasion get
asked to produce small quantities of bricks to an individual design. If our clay is suitable, we will
do it. Just call the Sales office to see what we can do.

ISO 14001
Environmental management standards exist to help companies minimise the way in which their
operations negatively affect the environment (cause adverse changes to air, water, or land) and
comply with applicable laws and regulations. Following an assessment by an independent body,
Northcot has been awarded ISO 14001 certification. This certification has only been achieved by
less than 1% of UK businesses and this prestigious award is supported by the Government and
recognised worldwide.

All our bricks have been used for building around the country. Why not go and see the brick you
like in situ? A call to our Sales office or an email will allow us to direct you to a building in that
brick near to you.
THE FIRST DETAIL
Individualism, kerb appeal and resale value
The last thing that you are thinking about is selling your home at this stage. However, at some
point it will be sold. Therefore, you should consider what contribution bricks could make to
getting the best price. Bricks will have a major impact whatever you do as they account for up
to 70% of the external impression. We suggest you chose a brick that takes into account both
your neighbourhood – you may want to stand out or blend in with other houses – and the
local landscape.
Bespoke colours and sizes
One of the ways to make sure your home is unlike any other is to have the bricks hand-sorted.
You can select the colour blend you want. Additionally, the Northcot range is manufactured
in a particularly broad range of sizes, both metric and Imperial. Most can be supplied within
several weeks.

Samples, now and on-site
Blends
You will need samples at three crucial points. The first is to choose your brick – it is important
that you are happy with the colour, size and texture. The second is for planning and conservation
approval - we will provide you with the panels for this. The third is when you are preparing on
site – we will provide you with a sample of the bricks for your builder to build a trial panel for
approval by the planners and matching by the bricklayers.
Our range of bricks can be delivered in the blend in this brochure or you may like to choose
your own. If you would like to have a bespoke blend, please call our Sales Office to discuss your
requirements.
Weathering
We produce bricks in many differing degrees of weathering. Here you can see four different stages
for the same brick. The effect can be from very subtle to obvious. Let us help you to achieve the
end result you have in your mind.

Professional Advice
Service at site
It is important to make sure that you get the right quantity to your site at the right time. Talk to
your surveyor to get advice and of course feel free to talk to us. It may be that you require the
bricks to be delivered in batches and we can arrange that too.
We work closely with many architects, surveyors and builders merchants. We have a wealth of
experience to offer to you. That experience can be at its most effective on-site. Please involve us if
you think we can help or advise.
Site visits
Service from merchant
Once the bricks are delivered to site from the merchants, we may come to inspect them to check
they are being laid appropriately. The quality of the bricklaying will have a long-term effect on the
longevity of the bricks and how good they look. Keep us informed and we will give you as much
advice as you need.
Our merchants are our trading partners. We know they will support the choice of Northcot
bricks in any way they can. They also have a broader remit in terms of the building supplies they
provide. We recommend that you use this to make your building process as easy as possible.

SPECIALS TECHNICAL
Forms of bricks
Although the diagrams in this standard indicate solid bricks, bricks of special shapes may
be solid, frogged, cellular or perforated.
NOTE: The specifier should ascertain from the supplier the exact nature of any voids and
consider the structural implications as well as the implications for constructional detailing.
Faced surfaces
The surfaces of the bricks which will be faced are indicated by shading in the diagrams
shown in the tables in this standard. Surfaces not visible in the diagrams are not faced.
NOTE: If specifiers require other surfaces to be faced, they should consult the
manufacturers or suppliers.
Colour and surface texture
With some types of bricks and manufacturing techniques, it is not possible to ensure that
the colour and texture of all the exposed faces of special shapes exactly match those of the
corresponding standard bricks.
NOTE: Specifiers should consult with the supplier at an early stage to establish their needs
for a particular application.
Left and right-handed bricks
Left or right-handed versions will sometimes need to be specified, e.g.
(a) where the special shape brick is asymmetric, e.g. a single bullnose stop (Type BN.3);
(b)where the directional nature of the surface texture of the bricks requires them to be laid
in one aspect to avoid variations in appearance in the built wall.
When a brick has a handed version the diagram indicates whether a left-hand (LH) or righthand (RH) version is shown.
NOTE: The need to specify handed versions of single-frogged bricks in positions where
compressive strength may be critical (see 0.5) may be avoided by, on the appropriate hand,
filling the frog with mortar before laying it frog down. An example is the use of squint
bricks (Group 4, Type AN.1) at both sides of an opening.

Compressive strength
Clay and Calcium Silicate bricks of special shapes and sizes may have a lower compressive
strength than bricks made to EN771–1 and EN771–2 from the same raw materials.
NOTE: In positions where compressive strength may be critical,
e.g. under the ends of lintels, it is usually necessary to fill any frogs in the bricks with
mortar. Where strength is a critical design requirement the manufacturers should be
consulted.
Durability
Bricks of special shapes which are to be used in positions where they are liable to be
saturated and frozen, e.g. in parapets, copings, cappings and sills, need to be suitably
durable (see item (e) of appendix A).
NOTE: Specifiers should consult with manufactures or suppliers regarding the suitability of
the brick for use in such exposed positions.
1. Scope
This British Standard specifies the shapes and dimensions of bricks of special shapes and
sizes made from clay, calcium silicate or concrete and intended for use in the construction
of brick masonry. The dimensions and other requirements of standard bricks are covered by
EN771–1, EN771–2, EN771–3.
NOTE: The purchaser should supply with his enquiry or order the information given in
appendix A.
2. Shapes and Dimensions
Unless otherwise stated all dimensions are in millimetres.
